Can I switch my PowerBook G4 RAM into my Power Mac G5?

I have both a Power Mac G5 and a PowerBook G4. The G5 only has 1GB of RAM. Can I take the RAM out of my G4 and put it into my G5? Also, the G4 only has Tiger while the G5 has Leopard. Can I get the newer OS onto the PowerBook? (Power Mac has a back drive.)

You need to use a proper retail install disk. The was a period in the OS9 days when you could drag-n-drop an OS but not since OSX came out. Plus a notebook needs OSX components not needed by a desktop and probably not present on your G5.
Before buying a retail 10.5 disk, make sure of your G4's variant (which we don't know yet). Early G4 PowerBooks made before November 2002 are constrained to OS 10.4.11.

No; RAM which can't keep up with the computer's bus will be ignored. Faster RAM will work as long as it's able to operate at the speed the bus requires.
In any case, ensure that the vendor advertises compatibility with your Mac model.

  • Will adding more RAM to my Power Mac G5 make a difference?

I have a Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) with 1 GB of RAM, which is how I ordered it. Sometimes when I am viewing large (large viewing size) video files with Quicktime, the video files get a little choppy from time to time, especially when I have many other applications open. Will adding more RAM fix this or is it not really necessary? Also, does Leopard improve this problem? I am currently using Tiger.

    Hey Tim
I'm definitely not an expert - but more Ram makes a huge difference. I'm not sure if more Ram will specifically solve your Quicktime issues or whether upgrading your graphic card is really the answer. Those more knowledgeable should jump in here. Buying Ram from 3rd parties, like OWC (making sure you do have the right compatible Ram), will improve your performance immediately. I noticed the difference when maximizing the RAm on my G4. It cannot hurt. 4GB of Ram for my G5 cost less than $200. I think Ram is the biggest bang for the buck.
Do you really need to get Leopard? The performance of Tiger on the G5 for me is solid. Seems like Tiger is optimized at this point for the G5 processor chips. Why muck around with all the potential problems you read about on these forums. Check out the Adobe forum and hear some of their nightmare stories. Who has this amount of time to waste on fixing what shouldn't need fixing in the first place. Just a thought - hope I'm not out of line for chiming in on this.
Since your model can take 8GB of Ram, indulge yourself and maybe buy another 4GB of matched Ram and if it doesn't solve your Quicktime issues, I'll bet it will make you happy with everything else.

  • Best way to update and expand RAM on old Power Mac G5?

I own a Power Mac G5 and am currently transferring all my files and music over. I have already run out of start up disk space after only transferring 1000 tracks and a few files. I'm sure this can't be right, but even so I would like to expand my memory and update to the latest versions of OSX but I have no idea if this is possible with such an old machine or even cost efficient. I would like something that I can do design work on as well as storing around 50,000 song tracks. Help!

  • What specific type of RAM does the Power Mac 8600/200 take?

What specific type of RAM (Memory) does the Power Macintosh 8600/200 take? If known, where could I get a hard drive for that Power Mac? eBay???? Any help would be gladly appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    Sean Butler

    Sean,
Craig refered to MacGurus. Here is their website:
    http://www.macgurus.com/products/motherboards/mbppc8600.php
You will find valuable information there.
Just a word of caution. If you have G3 memory chips and chips for the 8600/9600 etc. side by side, they will look almost identical but the registration notch is 1/16 of an inch off. Do not force one into the other machine. The real easy way to distinquish the 8600 memory chip is the two odd silicon chips in the middle that are not the same as the other standard RAM chips lined up on either side. They are parity checking chips, if my memory serves me correctly. The G3 memory modules will have identical chips all the way accross.
Be sure and follow the other links like:

for a complete run down on EDO chips.

  • Can I use a flat screen monitor with my Power Mac G$?

Can I connect my Power Mac G4 (model M5183) to a modern flat screen monitor? I already tried it with a small flat screen TV which works fine with my MacBook Pro but couldn't make it work with the G4. I only need the G4 for a SCSI slide scanner that I use occasionally, and would love to get rid of the mostrosity of a monitor that came with the G4. I've updated the processor in the G4 to 1 GHz and run it with OS 10.5.8.

  • RAM for 2003 Power Mac?

I am selling 2GB - (4) 512 MB DDR DIMM,P RAM for Power Mac G5 (2005) on ebay since I upgraded to more RAM. Someone asked me if this would work on their Power Mac G5 from 2003. I wasn't sure. Any advice? Thanks!

I would go to http://www.crucial.com/ and select the the specs for by model and processor speed to see if they match up with your ram. I am a PC Tech and I use this site frequently for max ammount ram, number of memory banks and so on. The ram Crucial sold me for my Dual Core G5 works rock solid so I trust thier research.

  • EMac RAM compatible with Power Mac G4?

I am interested in a craigslist auction that is selling RAM pulled from an eMac. All the information given is that he has two 168-pin DIMMs of 128MB and 512MB memory. Will this work with a Power Mac G4/400Mhz/AGP graphics version? It also uses 168-pin memory.
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4)   400MHz G4, 64MB RAM, 20GB HDD, AGP Graphics

Standard RAM for your G4 is 168-pin PC100. Early eMacs used 168-pin PC133 which should be backwards compatible but you need to get assurances. Later eMacs use 184-pin PC2700, same as the later G4 MDDs.
This RAM vendor's page has a good description of the RAM used in various Mac models. They also have decent prices so compare the price to what the private offering asks.

You can't. Just look for a secondhand Intel Mac.

  • 1GB RAM stick for Power Mac G4 MDD Okay?

My Power Mac 1.25 GHz dual-boot G4 currently has 768 MB of DDR SDRAM. One slot has a 256 MB DDR SDRAM PC2600U-25330, a second slot has a 512 MB DDR SDRAM PC2600U-25330 stick, and two slots are empty. The MDD will recognize up to 2GB of RAM.
I have a really good deal on a Apple G5 Power Mac G4 MDD 1GB DDR PC3200 RAM Memory stick. The seller says it will work in a G5 and also my G4. Is a 1GB stick safe to buy or should I try to find two 512s instead? I don't have "matching pairs" now and wonder how critical that is?

Other World Computing only has 256MB & 512MB RAM modules for the G4 MDD. http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=175 I would think that if 1GB modules would work, they would sell them. Give OWC a call & ask.
The G5 RAM is PC3200 & may or may not be compatible with your G4. Even if it is, it will only operate at your Mac's processor speed & not 3200. The G5 Macs require matched pairs, but the G4 does not.

  • How can I partition my external hard drive into NTFC and Mac OS Extended Journaled?

I brought a 1tb external hard drive from Western Digital. It currently have one partition which is Mac OS X (Journaled). I want to have two partition, one Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and one NTFC for Windows. When I try to choose 2 partition and choose a partition type, I only get the following choices:
    1. Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
    2. Mac OS X Extended (Case-Sensitive, Journaled)
    3. MS-DOS (FAT)
    4. ExFAT
    5. Free Space
I don't want to use MS-DOS (FAT) because I am limited to only 32gb of space and I need plenty of space for Windows files.

Assuming that  entire drive is GUID and you keep the existing journaled partition.
Make a second partition that is exFAT (more storage ability than FAT) using DU.
Then mount the drive on a Windows 7 and reformat that exFAT as NTFS.  But remember that Mac can read and write exFAT natively, but cannot write NTFS without special software.  Perhaps exFAT is what you want.
But more the the point: is the journaled partition used as a backup device?  If it is, I would leave that drive alone as a backup drive and use a second device for "data only" sharing between types.
