Can I switch to wifi-only usage?

I travel quite a bit, and want to know whether I can turn off the phone function and still use an iPhone in wifi mode.
I want to prevent, for instance, unnecessary roaming charges. I want to make sure the iPhone doesn't use another service provider while overseas, leaving me with exhorbitant data-usage fees.
In a word, is there a way to turn an iPhone into an iPod touch?
Thanks.

A301,
There are a few things you can do to achieve what you want. I wouldn't unnecessarily be removing the sim on your iPhone. The sim card holder plastic isn't the most robust for in and out use.
In the Setting -> General -> Network make sure Data Roaming is Off. If you don't have that option, upgrade your firmware to 1.1.3 (or the latest).
Next, I would turn auto-check for email off. Settings -> Mail -> Auto-Check.
If your iPhone is jailbroken, I use a handy tool called services that puts Edge, Wifi, Bluetooth and SSH on-off switches in one app.
Finally, either turn off or confirm that Edge roaming is off on your account by calling 611.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

  • Can wiFi only iPad be tethered to to iPhone for 3G data transmission

Can WiFi only iPad be tethered to to iPhone for 3G data transmission. I already have an iPhone with data plan and don't want or need a second data plan. Can I connect the WiFi only iPad to iPhone with USB (iPhone) cable for 3G transmission. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
    Dave

    pharmercist,
Since you're in canada you might be on Rogers or another carrier that does support tethering. Check with your carrier of course before turning it on - data can be costly.
The iPhone is designed to tether via Bluetooth PAN or USB dock connector. See http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3gs/tethering.html
The iPad explicitly does not support tethering on Bluetooth. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3647 I've never heard of a 30 pin to 30 pin connector or any mention of the internet coming in from a 30 pin connector on any device so I doubt USB tethering could work on the iPad or any device in the family.
Your only bet would be to make or find an app that would proxy the data from 3G/EDGE and serve it up WiFi style. It wouldn't be built into the phone as a background service like proper tethering is and learning to code and join the developer program so you can install your own apps is a lot of work and expense. I don't know if the bluetooth issue is a software decision or built in limitation to the hardware - either way - it looks like iPad WiFi isn't going to tether easily.

  • Location services not working after iOS 6 update (WiFi only)

After updating my iPad (3 & WiFi only) to iOS 6 the location services no longer work. This stops some apps from working. It was fine before the update. Does anyone have a fix for this yet? I know others have been having the same problem.

Before IOS 4 iPad and iPhone used Google and Skyhook databases for position info. In April Apple switched to using it's own in house database for location services. In the past one could register the MAC address and position of a router or access point with Skyhook and within 2 to 3 weeks any device with location services could find itself. Now with Apple handling it's own position database and no way to register an access point or router it is hit or miss as to whether an iPad or iPhone can find itself using WIFI only. If you live in a rural area you are less likely to have location services work. Hopefully Apple will emulate Skyhook in future by allowing users to register their access points or router's location in their data base. Until then those of us in rural areas are out of luck. Cheers

  • Is there an alternative way to switch on wifi as part of screen is faulty?

  • I've lost my iphone with passcode lock and find my iphone lock on but the wifi n cellular data was turned off so no way i can trace it so the only question remains is will the person who finds it be able to unlock it and use it as his own ?

i've lost my iphone with passcode lock and find my iphone lock on but the wifi n cellular data was turned off so no way i can trace it so the only question remains is will the person who finds it be able to unlock it and use it as his own ?
is it possible to change imei number?
i've tried for so many times n still the phone is offline so i've set it to offline mode with my message but it never shows the last location why?

If the device is found, nobody can use it without knowing your Apple ID and password.
The phone will only show it's location if it is connected to cellular network or Wi-Fi. If those options are switched off, you can't locate the phone.
With iOS 7, Find My iPhone includes a new feature called Activation Lock, which is designed to prevent anyone else from using your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you ever lose it. It starts working the moment you turn on Find My iPhone in iOS 7. With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password will be required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
    Erase your device
    Reactivate and use your device
This can help you keep your device secure, even if it is in the wrong hands, and can improve your chances of recovering it. Even if you erase your device remotely, Activation Lock can continue to deter anyone from reactivating your device without your permission. All you need to do is keep Find My iPhone turned on, andremember your Apple ID and password.
What steps should I take if I misplace my device?
If you ever misplace your device—whether it’s just lost or you think it may have been stolen—you should put it into Lost Mode immediately using Find My iPhone.
Lost Mode locks your screen with a four-digit passcode and lets you display a custom message with your phone number to help you get it back. You can also remotely erase your device if needed, and your custom message will continue to display even after the device is erased.
While Activation Lock works in the background to make it more difficult for someone to use or sell your missing device, Lost Mode clearly indicates to anyone who finds your device that it still belongs to you and can’t be reactivated without your password.
To put a device into Lost Mode, sign in to icloud.com/find from a Mac or PC or use the Find My iPhone iOS app.
For more information, read what to do if your device is lost or stolen.

How I can use my galaxy II only for camera and  while I am traveling out of states without any extra charge?

i think you can put the device in airplane mode then selectively turn on wifi...
before you travel you could try this and check your cellular usage on the settings ! mobile data display. you might be able to turn mobile data / cellular radio off that way as well.

  • Can I use Siri on WiFi only Ipad Air?

Hi all... I want to get an IPad.  I am new to Apple, and wanted to know about Siri.  If I get the WiFi only version, and then use it to connect on my home WiFi and tether to my phone sometimes when I am away, will I be able to use Siri while connected to Wifi?

Siri is available in all ipad devices, to switch ON siri all you have to do is to tap hold your Home button for 1-2 sec, and siri will ask--what it can do for you. Yes your siri will be available anytime, whatever way you use your ipad to connect to internet, doesn't matter-wifi or cellular.

  • After I connect with my iPhone (3GS 5.0.1) to any Ad-hoc wireless Network then walk away out of the reach of my wifi network, my iPhone can't find any wifi Network afterwards, only by turning off the iPhone completely and turning on again.

switching off wifi and on again or going into airplane mode did't help!
This problem happens only with ad-hoc wifi networks not with normal ones.
(Ad-Hoc network was created on XP Computer)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Sorry, but the 169.x.x.x IP address is internally generated by the iPod (and iPhone) and indicates that a network has been detected but no IP address has been issued. Your friends iPhone was not connected to your ad hoc network either - it connected to the internet through the 3G network.
You should read through the Vista help screens on ad hoc networking for some insight how this works. You should be able to get some ideas there.
In the mean time, $40 or less will buy you a very capable wireless router with four Ethernet ports and will simplify your network tremendously. Having used Windows ICS for a long time, the addition of a router and a real network simplified things so much.

  • My new IPad 3 cannot connect to WIFI even it has a full bar of the reception. In the same location, my PC and my smart phone get a full bar connection without any issues.  How can I do to fix the issues (can I switch to IPad 2)?

My new Ipad 3 cannot connect to WIFI even it has a full bar of reception. In the same location, my Windows 7 PC and Andorid Smart phone can connect to the same WIFI without any issues.  How can I fix it?  Without WIFI, the WIFI only IPAD is nearly useless. If it cannot be fixed, can I get a replacement for IPad 2?

Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation. If defective, you'll get a replacement.

I want to order a second copy of an existing iPhoto book. Though created in the smaller format now only the larger format is showing. How can I switch an existing iPhoto book back to the smaller format?

To change a book size duplicate it (select the book in the source pane and press command and D) since text flow and picture  placements can change due to the size differences - then click on change themes, select the same theme and the new size
    check it carefully
Before ordering your book preview it using this method - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference - the delivered book will match it.
