Can I sync a MacBook Pro to my iMac.......like syncing my iPhone or iPod Touch...using a common USB cable?

Hullo all.
Am curious to know whether I can, on a regular basis, sync my new MacBook Pro to my main machine, the 27 inch iMac?
Obviously I do this with my iPhone, iPad2 and my iPod Touch.
I guess I would use a USB to USB cable...which I have, to allow the two Mac's to talk to each other.
Any suggestions? I do have Chronosync...should I try this application?

ps, I did buy the new iPad2 and love it...but, for all its brilliance , it is not a MBP......obviously!
So, I bought a new one to the one I sold a few months back, and it is fabulous, got a 500 gig machine this time!

Comment was an after thought! But it might help explain my situation!

Hi all, a bit surprised at total lack of feedback!
Maybe with the Cloud coming, we don't need to worry about manually syncing devices!!
So, can I conclude that you can't really 'sync' a MacBook to an iMac?
Appreciate an answer
Thanks

  • How to sync my macbook pro with my imac?

I´ve bought a macbook pro and I want to sync data with my imac. How do I do?

If you mean copy files from one to the other you can connect the two via firewire cable and boot one into Target Disk Mode.

  • How do I sync my MacBook Pro with my iMac?

Hey everyone, I have the following situation:
I have an iMac, a Macbook Pro, iTunes Match and a Time Capsule. I produce music and I DJ and I want my two computers in sync, so that I have the music projects I do on my iMac on my Macbook to work on them on the fly and the songs I buy on my Macbook on my iMac for safekeeping. Both these options should of course should work both ways, so the changes update.
The problem with the music production is that I cannot simply migrate my iMac to my Macbook, I need to individually install the applications again, therefore I probably cannot sync the Macs in their entirety, but folders only.
Any suggestions? If there is a way to do it with time machine, it would come in handy since I already own a functioning time capsule, however I would rather only update one of the two macs since I work with a lot of data and it can only contain 3TB.
    Thank you very much indeed!

Synchronizing data between devices is a complex issue, and there's no really ideal solution. This comment is an oversimplification.
Mail can be synchronized by storing it on a mail server that uses the IMAP protocol, such as iCloud. The mail stays on the server, so it's automatically in sync with all mail clients.
Several other kinds of data can be synced via iCloud, such as calendars, iWork documents, photos, Safari tabs and bookmarks, and keychains. Some third-party applications can also sync with iCloud, but not many. iCloud is easy to use, for the most part. The drawbacks of using it are, first, that it doesn't sync everything; and second, that some of your private information will be in the hands of strangers. Read the iCloud feature list and privacy notice carefully before deciding whether or how to use it. There should be no privacy concerns with iCloud keychain, because the data is encrypted end-to-end and is not accessible to anyone at Apple—but you have to take Apple's word for that.
A more comprehensive solution, and one that doesn't raise any privacy issues, is to set up an OS X Server on your network and create mobile accounts on your other Macs. You will then be able to synchronize all files in the home folder automatically at logout, or at any other time manually. The main drawback here is that OS X Server would be hard for most non-technical users to set up and maintain. Another is that the synchronization only works with Macs, not mobile devices.
Third-party software such as Unison can also be used to synchronize files over a network. Unison is free, but it's not easy to set up in a way that doesn't lead to conflicts when files are modified on different devices between synchronizations. To synchronize more than two Macs in this way, you'll want to use one as the master, and sync between it and the others.

  • How to sync new Macbook Pro with 2011 iMAC on Snow Leapord

    Hello,
This is my first post so hello!
My small business has an office iMAC and a Macbook Air both running 10.6.8. The two aren't synced in any way other than that the Air can access files from the iMAC's hard drive via the network. I have 2 email accounts on the iMAC's mail and just one of them set up on the Air.
I've just bought a new 15" Macbook Pro running Lion.
I'd like to be able to sync some folders (but definitely not all), bookmarks, iTunes and mail accounts between the iMAC and the new Macbook Pro. Ideally I'd like to be able to access the shared/synced folders when I don't have an internet connection
    What's the best method?
Snow Leapord doesn't have iCloud does it? If not, why the **** not?
Is it just easiest to set up the email accounts on the new MBP as normal and then use dropbox for the folders I want to share? Can I access the with no internet connection?
One other question, can i link a gmail account to my Apple mail?
    Thanks for any help.
    Best wishes
    Dave.

No.  It was a feature that was introduced with the release of 10.7.2.  I do not know why it was not introduced on earlier versions.  Probably the same reasons why some features will be introduced in later versions of OS X that will not be found on older versions.

  • How do I use internet sharing from my MacBook Pro (static IP, only one DNS server) to my iPod Touch?

    Hey,
I'm connecting to the net using an Ethernet cable to my MacBook with the following network settings.
    IP Address: 192.168.y.{0-250}
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.y.x (where 'y' is the same number as in the IP address)
    DNS Server: 192.168.99.3
Apologies if I'm being unclear; not sure how much information it's OK to share publicly.
I then turn on Airport and Internet Sharing, and look for my wireless network with my 4th generation iPod Touch. However, the network appears erratically. I sometimes have to wait for a minute or two and keep refreshing before it appears on my iTouch. When I try to connect it just says 'Failed to connect to the network'.
I've followed all the steps in this article with several variations to no avail.

Can anyone suggest a solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been banging my head against this for days.

On the advice of a friend I installed and ran a program on my MacBook called 'IPSecuritas'. This has stopped my wireless network from appearing and disappearing, but I still can't connect. Would really appreciate some help with this.

  • Macbook Pro internal HDD won't boot the OS, but if i use it by usb works perfect

Hi people I have this computer with the following problem: The computer will not start the hard drive if I left the drive internally .When start the machine with this hard drive internally I get the error foulder with the question mark, but the same hard drive boot the OS if I connect it by USB. I did the tests to verify the hard drive, but testing the hard drive they works perfect. I thought it was the hard drive SATA connector, but the computer recognizes it but will not let me do anything to this hard drive. The computer let me see the drive the file system and the capacity but can't do any change to the drive. This hard drive is formatted in journals file system that everything works fine when connected by usb and boot the operating system but does nothing when connected internally only appear but you can't make any changes in the hard drive. The machine does the same thing if a connect a new hard drive. Anyone have any idea what can happen to this machine?

If the drive is working properly outside the system but not inside the system then you have a bad piece of hardware inside the system.
If the drive does not work properly inside or outside the system then the drive has failed and will need to be replaced.
Need more info on your last post.
If you are booting the computer from that drive you can't make any changes to it with Disk Utility as the system is Running from it. You have to boot the system from some other drive to make changes.
What model year Mac do you have? When did you buy it?

  • HT1454 Can I send audio and video signals from sling box on my IPhone to a tv using any of these cables?

I have an iPhone 4 and would like to stream the sling box signal from my phone to a TV. Is there a cable that will do this?  I have heard that the only thing you can show on the TV from your phone is content stored on your phone.

TV out on the iPhone 4 only display video out for the apps that support v'ideo out. The app description in the App store will say if it supports TV out. iPhone4S will mirror the iPhones screen with VGA or Digital AV adopter.

  • How do I get iCloud to share info from my macbook pro to my iMac? I have all the updates on both but I am SO lost!!!

I am having a heck of a time syncing my macbook pro with my iMac. I have all the updates and followed the instructions on apple.com, but there is no communication with either device nor an option that I find to sync them up. When I turn on photo stream on either device, it only selects a few, maybe 1,000 out of the nearly 10,000 photos I have. I try selecting all and then choosing photo stream but with no luck. I know there's a lot of you smart people out there who know what I'm doing wrong. Please help!!!

The following is from this Apple document, iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ, and will help you understand how Photo Stream works:
    My Photo Stream
When you take photos on an iOS device, or import photos from your digital camera to your computer, My Photo Stream can automatically upload your new photos to iCloud and push them to all of your other devices.
When do photos upload to My Photo Stream?
How long are My Photo Stream photos stored in iCloud?
The photos you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days to give your devices plenty of time to connect and download them.
How many photos are stored in My Photo Stream on my devices and computers?
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.
Your iOS devices keep a rolling collection of your last 1000 photos in the My Photo Stream album. From there, you can browse your recent photos or move the ones you like to your Camera Roll or another album to keep them on your device forever.
Since your Mac and PC have more storage than your iOS devices, you can choose to have all of your My Photo Stream photos automatically downloaded. In iPhoto or Aperture preferences on your Mac, be sure to select Photo Stream > My Photo Stream > Automatic Import. All of your photo stream photos will be imported into your Events, Projects, Photos, Faces, and Places folders in iPhoto or Aperture. On your PC with Photo Stream enabled in the Control Panel, all of your photos will be imported into C:\Users\<user name>\Pictures\Photo Stream\My Photo Stream.

  • How can I sync my iPad 2 with my new MacBook Pro when it is already synced with my old MacBook? I am getting a message on the new MacBook Pro that says I am not allowed to sync the iPad 2 because it is synced to another iTunes library.

How can I sync my iPad 2 with my new MacBook Pro when it is already synced with my old MacBook? I am getting a message on the new MacBook Pro that says I am not allowed to sync the iPad 2 because it is synced to another iTunes library.

    1) ensure iTunes is authorized for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPad but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPad with it.
above works for purchases from the iTunes store. for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
also, there are PhoneView and iRip.

Try deleting the photo cache from your computer and then re-try the photo sync - the location of the cache, and how to delete it, is on this page http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314

The required file was not found or has permission error.  Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthrize this computer if the permission cannot be changed.
That was when I was trying to buy the pages app.  The reason I was so I could store and use the ICloud between my compert and my IPad.

  • I got an iphone 4. I had to update my macbook pro to Lepard just to sync. I updated to lepard. Now when I try to sync itunes does not recognize my new iphone 4 as mine and wants to erase everything I have bought using the phone.

I upgraded from Iphone 3g to iphone 4. I had to update my macbook pro to Lepard just to sync. the **** thing with the new iphone 4. I bought and updated to lepard. Now when I try to sync itunes does not recognize my new iphone 4 as mine and wants to erase everything I have bought using the phone before it will sync! It says everything on the phone now will be cleared in order to sync it with my existing info on the computer from my previous iphone. How can I just get everything from my current iphone 4 into itunes, basically add it to the info from my previous iphone 3g that is currently in my itunes?  I dont want to lose what I have on my phone currently....I paid money for half the apps for crying out loud.
I was so frustrated by this when I first bought the phone that I just pushed it out of my mind and NEVER synced it. Please help...

Nope - you cannot restore a backup from a newer iOS version on to a device running an older iOS version.  The reverse works, but in your case to use your backup, you must update to iOS 7.0.3 - no other option if you want to use that backup.

As noted in the header, any new contacts entered into my iPhone 5s will not sync to my MacBook Pro via iTunes when I try to sync via wifi or direct usb connection. What's up with that? New contacts that I enter directly into the laptop will sync to the iPhone, not visa versa. Anyone have any idea how I can fix this?
