Can I sync different pieces to different computers?

I just got an iPod touch, and reading this forum, I see that you can't sync to more than one computer. But is it possible to sync different things to different computers? Or maybe to sync non-purchased items like the calendar and address book to two computers?
What I want to do is have my iPod sync music and apps to personal laptop, and calendar and address book to my work computer. It would be an added bonus if I could get my work calendar and address book to my personal laptop.
I actually plugged my ipod into my work computer (after starting on the personal laptop) before reading here and seeing that it only ought to work for one computer. I had previously only synced music and apps from my personal laptop, and now I successfully synced my calendar and address book from my work computer. Can I continue doing this? Or will I run into something weird?
Also, I tried to sync address book then onto my personal laptop, and it warned me that it was already attached to another account, but gave me the option to "merge" address books. I did this, and as far as I can tell, it appears to have now added the contacts from my work computer to the test ones I put in before I got back to work. Will this "merge" option continue to work, and I can keep both of them synced? Or, again, is there a problem that would crop up?

Stevie
Cheonweb is right  -- it depends.
Here is a very long thread on this issue.

Maybe you can tell us more - "syncing" seems to mean different things to different people.  For instance, I think of syncing as distinct from "back-up".. others see them as the same.

  • Can you sync thunderbird email between several computers so if you delete an email on one computer in thunderbird it also deletes it out of the other computers.

    Can you sync thunderbird email between several computers so if you delete an email on one computer in thunderbird it also deletes it out of the other computers it syncs with? I have three computers I use daily in different location and have thunderbird on each computer. I find it time consuming to have to repeatedly delete the same emails from each location. I am thinking that by leaving the emails on the server and not downloading them in each computer would solve this. Is my assumption here correct? If not? How would you set up Tbird to sync?

    If you set up your email account(s) as IMAP instead of POP3, then each computer / smart phone can view the mail, but if any of them delete a message (or move it to another folder on the server), the same action will be seen on the other computers.

  • How can I sync Mail database between MAC computers without using IMAP

    All, I know this has been asked several times in several forums but I wish to ask it again with a slight twist. The normal question is can I sync  Apple mail database (folders) between two MAC computers. The answer is always use IMAP, but unfortunately IMAP is limited on space to store historical emails. I keep mailboxes (on_my_mac) with thousands of emails and attachments that take up a massive amount of space, well beyond any IMAP server allowances. I keep these in order to search conversations that span over many months and sometimes years.
    I use GoodSync to sync my normal folders from my MAC Book Pro and my Mac Pro desktop so that I can have the same information (in real time) when working from home on my big machine or at the office using the laptop. This is great except I can not sync the email. I use Outlook 2011 but would prefer to use apple mail if I can sync the two computers (Sync'ing Outlook 2011 is even more impossible).
    I also do not want to start and stop my email clients to make this happen and worry about which MAC is running mail and what direction to copy the entire folder structure just to have to follow that up with a new re-build of the index.
    Has anyone came up with a viable solution this this problem. Also keep in mind the amount of data - Cloud based solutions are dependent on Internet connection speed (days of initial transfer time and hours to sync) and if I am on my laptop without internet connection, say on an airplane, I would be out of luck so I need the information local on each computer.
    Hopefully someone has some ideas, or maybe Apple can take a request for enhancement to Mail to support syncing multiple computers.

    I assume that this is a POP system then.
    There is no reliable method of syncing the Mail database between 2 Macs. Just how many Gigabytes of Mail do you have?

  • Can I sync one iPhone via two computers (MacBook and Windows XP) using iTunes?

    My idea is the following:
    Sync one iPhone using iTunes installed on two computers:
    from Windows XP:
    * Outlook 2010 contacts
    * Outlook 2010 calendar
    * music
    from MacBook:
    * contacts
    OR
    from Windows XP:
    * Outlook 2010 contacts
    * Outlook 2010 calendar
    from MacBook:
    * contacts
    * music
    Can I do this?
    How would I have to do the set-up?
    Additional question: Can I buy apps from iTunes App Store on either of the two computers and having them downloaded automatically on the iPhone?

    You can't. You can only sync with one library at a time. I is possible, though not recommended, to sync contacts with one computer and media with another. There is no way to sync contacts with more than one computer.
    The best idea would be to sync it with your MacBook and the cloud, and sync Outlook on the PC with the cloud.
    Since iCloud requires Windows 7, you would probably be best to sync contacts and calendars with Google or Yahoo.

  • Can I sync my ipod with multiple computers using home share?

    Once I homeshare all my computers, can I sync my ipod with any of them?  Or do I always have to sync using the same computer.

    What kind of iPod do you have?
    For most iPods you can click Manually manage music on the summary page in iTunes. Check out Apple's document -> Using iPad or iPod with multiple computers.
    WTH.

  • Can you sync Iphone 3gs to 2 computers?

    I have a computer that I put all my songs on then got a laptop for christmas so I downloaded Itunes to it and started using that Itunes. I bought games and songs and everytime I try to sync the songs it makes me delete my old songs hat I downloaded from my old computer. If you know what I can do please reply.
    Thanks.

    No. The iPhone does not support disk mode as is supported with some iPods which allows for manually managing music and videos with an iTunes library on more than one computer.
    In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced or manually managed with music and video with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only.

  • Can you Sync different parts from different machines

    I've got an iPod with Video and three computers with music on (work, home and laptop).
    I'd like to sync my podcasts from work, contacts and calendar from my laptop and add music from all three.
    As far as I can tell you can't do this? If it's synced with one machine none of the others will be able to copy to it
    I've got two Macs and a PC, and the iPod is formatted for Windows.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Because I like answering my questions.
    Yes, it seems you can - as long as you tick 'Manually manage music and videos'
    Yeh!

  • How can i sync different materials into my iPod and iPad on the same computer?

    i don't want iTunes to sync all the apps from my iPod to my iPad, what can i do?

    When the devices are attached to your computer's iTunes just select the apps that you want to have on each device on their apps tab. I manually manage the content on my iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch so only the content that I select gets installed onto each device.
    You can also set up separate playlists for the two devices for music, or create separate iTunes libraries : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495

  • Can I sync my iPhone with 2 computers?

    With my older iPods, I can sync and put music on them from more than one computer. Is this no more?
    With the iPhone, can I not sync up more than one computer? At home I have a Mac and PC, and at work I have a PC.

    ok, once again, just checking to see if there're any answers on this.
    I'd love to sync my videos from home, and my music from work. Drives me nuts that I can't. To make it better, I'd love it if I could just sync them both to both. i.e. I buy a song on amazon (not iTunes sorry) from my work computer, sync it to my iPhone, take that home and sync that up to my home computer.
    Even if I can't do that. To be able to just ADD music TO my iPhone from two different source computers would be great.
    Is there any way to accomplish this? Any way at all?

  • Can you sync one iPhone to two computers?

    I usually sync my iPhone to an iMac where I download new apps, keep my music, etc. But when I'm not at home I have a MacBook and I want to use its iTunes (same account) to download apps instead of using iPhone battery to do that. Can I do it without messing up?
    I also have an iCloud account, if that helps.
    Another question, probably related:
    What's the purpose of WiFi sync if you have to use the cable? Does a WiFi sync update the computer or the iCloud?
    thanks

    I sync each of my iOS devices to two different Macs. I haven't had any problems syncing apps and backups of each device to both Macs. Both copies of iTunes are logged in under the same iCloud account, so there's no conflict with the list of authorized apps. I would not attempt this if each iTunes was logged into a different account.
    If you want to sync anything else, you could get into trouble real fast. You need to be very aware of the different sync categories across the top in iTunes. For example, you can sync photos to one computer and podcasts to another, as long as you never turn on the same category on both Macs because that will cause each computer to overwrite the other's data. But since you said you don't want to sync music or photos, that shouldn't be a problem for you.
    WiFi sync exists so that you don't have to grab a cable just to do a sync. It's convenient, but it's a lot slower than cable sync.

    It's probably more accurate to say that iOS devices are designed to sync with only one account.

  • Can I sync my iPad to two computers?

    My iPad is synced to one computer and I have various songs on a different computer. Is there a way to get these songs on my iPad without erasing any data. I have lots of songs that I got off cd's on my iPad and I dont want to lose these. Thanks!

    Put all of the music on one computer.
    The ipad will sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content.

  • Can I sync IPhoto albums between two computers via ICloud?

    I have some pictures on my MacBook Pro, and some on my desktop.  Other than offloading to a hard drive and trying to duplicate the two drives, is there a way to create albums and have them show up on both computers via the cloud??

    brettjbyers
    No you cannot sync an iPhoto library between two macs. If you do you will corrupt the iPhoto Library file. iPhoto is a consumer level app, and this feature is not supported.
    What you can do is share the photos but not the library. Each machine will need to have it's own library file.
    The easiest way to do it this is to enable sharing (in the iPhoto Preferences) on both machines (one sharing the library, the other looking for the share). When you do this the shared library will appear in the Source (or left-hand) pane and pics can be dragged from that to the library in the other machine.
