I have a desktop and a laptop in my home. Currently, I have used the laptop for itunes and to synce my 80gig video ipod. However, I want to back up my music and set up a wireless server with the music from my home, so that I can access the songs on my laptop as well.(My laptop, obviously has much less storage space). Does anyone know if this is possible? I don't want to lose any of my music? My other problem that presents is that my husband has an iphone and I have the 80 gig video Ipod we cannot use the same itunes bc of the software or something! So, does this mean we have to buy 2 of everything we download????? Or can we download to a specific itunes folder on the desktop/server and both access the music wirelessly?

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:

Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time. It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library. If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library. So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.

There is no Info tab in Mavericks

If you connect your ipod to your computer then look in the hidden folder labeled "iPod_Control" . (This is on a Mac version, but i think it's the same for Windows) and in "Music" is all your music mixed up in different folders. Just drag the MUSIC folder onto itunes then BAM! It's done ;D

The sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
Copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.
Iphone will sycn with one computer at a time. Syncing to another will erase the current content.

All you can do is to restore and thus erase the iPod unless you can get a data recovery company to preserve the data.
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

How can I sync my iPod Classic with iTunes 11.1.4 and Windows 7 64-bit?

After assistance from ‘b Noir’ (and losing--then finally regaining--my DVD/CD reader in the process), I finally installed the iTunes Version 11.1.4 update on my Windows 7 64-bit PC. So I am again able to import music from CDs, play music on my PC with iTunes, and burn CDs as I could do with previous iTunes versions. Then, however, I purchased some new music and tried to sync iTunes with my iPod Classic for the first time since the update to 11.1.4. So far, I have been spectacularly unsuccessful. Can anyone help me?
With previous iTunes versions, sync was automatic when I connected iPod to a USB port. Now when I connect iPod Classic to PC's USB port (I've tried two different ports), iPod’s screen says “Connecting” but iTunes doesn’t open. And while iPod is connected to the USB port, I can't open iTunes by right-clicking its icon and selecting “Open.” (ITunes, however, always opens OK if iPod is NOT connected). With the iPod connected to a PC's USB port, I opened Windows 7 “Devices and Printers.” Devices shown included both (a) the “Apple iPod USB Device” and (b) “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.” I right-clicked each of these device icons in turn and selected “troubleshoot.” Both times, the report was “Troubleshooting couldn’t identify the problem.”
I am also unable to properly “eject” the iPod. I tried ejecting (a) from the Windows taskbar's Notification Area, (b) from Windows “Devices and Printers” and (c) by right clicking the iTunes icon and selecting “Eject.” Nothing worked, so I reluctantly pulled the cable out of the iPod without ejecting. That causes a yellow triangle with an exclamation point to appear in “Devices and Printers” for my PC—which disappears after shutting down and rebooting the PC.
If I start iTunes and THEN connect the iPod Classic to the USB port, iTunes does nothing and almost instantly freezes (shows as “not responding” in Windows Task Manager and I have to close it via Task Manager).
Suggestions, please, on what I need to do? My iPod Classic continues to work just fine, but I can't put any of my newly purchased music on it and I guess it will become an expensive paperweight if the battery happens to run down. If nothing else, is there an old version of iTunes I can download somewhere that likely will work with the iPod Classic and my PC setup? Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for your response--yes, I've seen the TS1363 document.
I was able to open iTunes, start the iPod Diagnostic Device Connectivity Test, and connect the iPod when prompted to do so. The only problem reported by the diagnostic program was "No iPod, iPhone or iPad found." So it does seem as if the TS1363 document should apply. But I have tried connecting the iPod after executing each of Steps 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 9 shown there and nothing has worked so far. Details follow:
--Went through the iPod Classic troubleshooting assistant--except I did not "reset" the iPod (because having all my "old" music available on the iPod has value to me).
--Restarted iPod Service.
--Restarted Apple Mobile Device Service.
--Verified that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed. There is no down arrow or question mark or other indication of problem with it.
--Tried two different USB ports (I assume that is what is meant by "change your iPod's drive letter"?).
--Temporarily disabled Norton Antivirus.
For some reason, there are 368 files and 60 folders in the Temp folder under my user name, and it looks like at least some are "read-only." Windows wouldn't let me delete or move the folder, even after I turned off Norton AntiVirus and closed the programs in the "Notification Area" that I could figure out how to close.
I'm very reluctant to get into messing with Config files or registry keys. And I have already tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes 11.4.1 so many times. I'm not sure what to do but am considering uninstalling all of the Apple products (again) and try installing an older version of iTunes. Or maybe I should try to install iTunes 11.4.1 on our Windows 8 laptop and see if the iPod will connect to that (although I really need to be able to sync to my desktop PC). Probably won't have time to do either for a few days--too many other things to do. But please let me know if there's something more that's relatively simple and low-risk I could try. Thanks again!

I'm having trouble syncing my ipod (colour 20GB) to my I-tunes library. I moved to Australia, got a new laptop and brought my I-tunes library from the UK on my external hard drive. I've installed I-tunes on my new laptop here, and linked I-tunes to the external hard drive. All of the songs appear on my I-tunes library as on my previous computer when I open I-tunes, but when I connect my I-pod it does not sync to the I-tunes library. I've updated the software on the I-pod to the latest software, and I'm running the latest I-tunes on my computer. When I right click on the Ipod icon in Itunes and hit "sync" nothing happens.
I don't understand as the songs on my external hard drive are all in Itunes format, I used it at home and it worked without any problems. Is it because my Ipod is somehow still synced to my old laptop?
I have tried copying all of the songs to my local hard drive, and manually dragging and dropping tunes from the I-tunes library to my Ipod using I-tunes but nothing works.
Incredibly frustrating as I can't add or remove any songs to/from my Ipod! Can anyone help me I'm at my wits end!

Does anybody know what -50 means? This pops up when I first plug it into my Mac, and all it says is "cannot be synced due to an unknown error (-50). First thing iTunes tries to do is backup my iPod, then that message turns up. I tried upgrading to the latest iPod software (2.2.1, I think), which didn't help; I'm running iTunes 8.0.2 (I think; that print is light and really small under "About iTunes").
I have not tried anything like restoring the iPod yet-I wanted to check first before doing anything, and the other thing that I noticed is that I can't restart my iPod by holding down the Home key (according to Apple's own support page). I never get the red slider. Any ideas on that?

OK, I wound up going to my local Genius Bar, and here's what we did:
1) reinstalled iTunes ...still didn't sync
2) repaired disk permissions...same thing
3) created a new user account on my MacBook and checked to see if my iPod touch would sync then...it did
4) went back to my user account, re-restored my iPod Touch and deleted the iPod backup file...and then it synced. At this point, it looked like it was a corrupted backup file.
When I got home and hooked it up to let it finish syncing, I realized that none of my photos had been transferred to my iPod touch, so I told it to...and the -50 error came up again. Another round of restoring the iPod and deleting the backup file, then I told it to load my photos from the My Pictures folder, rather than from iPhoto (which was the original setting before all this happened)...and it was fine. So my guess is that something in iPhoto 6 is tripping up the iTunes software (or vice versa) and screwing up the backup/sync process. I'll continue to keep an eye on it and see if that holds.

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

NOTE: If you have not kept a copy of your iTunes Library from 9.0.1 before upgrading to 9.1, then the 9.0.1 version cannot open the 9.1 version of the library. (That's one problem with backing-up everyday!!)-- Fortunately I also keep a 1 month backup on yet another external HD. Not a bad thing to do! So I didn't get my full current library back, but most- and I now have iTunes 9.0.1 which has not crashed- YES!

How can I sync 2 ipods on 1 iTunes?

I have an iPod Nano and now have bought an iPod touch. I want to sync both with 1 iTunes but the Touch with less content than the Nano. How can I do this??

iTunes will recognize each iPod as separate. I find the easiest way to handle syncing is to sync selected playlists. This way, you can make a playlist (or playlists) for your Touch and just that. I have about 5 iPods I sync to the same iTunes account/same computer. Each one has it's own preferences for syncing. Works beautifully.
