When sending my phone in for repair, can I take my SIM card out and use it in an older phone while mine gets repaired?

I recently left my phone in a public bathroom and when I went back it was gone. So I believe someone has taken it and has turned it off. If the iPhone has iOS 7, you set up Find My iPhone, and there's a screenlock passcode, then the iPhone is unusable to the thief or anyone he sells or gives the iPhone to.

The thief could have restored the iPhone which would cause it to no longer appear in Find My iPhone in iCloud, but it won't be usable. People steal them because either the thief is ignorant about Activation Lock, or they depend on buyers looking for a deal will be ignorant, which if you look at the many posts here from people who've bought an iPhone from a stranger and encountered Activation Lock is proof that such ignorance still abounds.

Nope. You will need to restore the device from a computer. whether you've synced to one in the past or not is irrelevant.

Removing the sim card will simply stop the iPhone from getting cell service. nothing more.

I have a second phone that is also a 3G. On the broken phone there is a lot of important information that I need in my calendar. Im not worried about anything else but the calendar. Nothing is stored on the sim card on an iPhone. If you backed up to your computer the backup will contain your calendar events. Otherwise, if your phone isn't functioning there is no way to back up or extract your calendar at this point.

You do a restore as new to wipe the iPhone then at the end of restore you will be asked to restore from backup. Choose your iPhone backup.
Note you cannot restore an IOS newer than the IOS on iPhone, you need to update iPhone first.

It cannot be traced. The service provider can block registration of the phone if it is a US carrier based on the IMEI. If you have the serial number Apple can tell you the IMEI. However, many stolen phones are shipped to other countries, where IMEI blocking for phones from other countries may not be honored. And a sophistcated thief or fence can change the IMEI.
If your friend did not have a passcode lock on the phone they should immediately change all passwords for email, twitter, facebook, bank sites - essentially anywhere that they use a password. Even if the phone had a passcode lock it is safer to change the passwords.

When recieving a call I cant unblock my phone and cant answer the call. Once this happens the only chance I have to make it work is to take out my sim card.

Your iPhone is probably locked to your former cell carrier. In such case only that carrier can unlock it, so you'll need to contact the carrier. Note that unless things have changed recently only 3 offers unlocking. If you used a different carrier, they do not appear to offer unlocking which means that your son will not be able to use your old iPhone. But call your carrier and ask.

Read your manual (you have a bookmark to it in Safari on your iPhone or put iBooks on your iPhone and download the manual from the iBookStore) and it will show you how to remove the microSIM from your iPhone. AT&T is not tourist friendly and does not offer a pay as you go plan for visitors with an iPhone. If you are going to be here for a short time you can probably buy a pay as you go microSIM and use it before AT&T notices, if it is going to be for a long time that won't work.
There is a 3rd party company that will sell you a microSIM that will work with AT&T but they are pretty pricey.
Finally, you can get a pay as you go microSIM from T-Mobile to work with your iPhone but you will only have EDGE data speeds.
