Can I take program files off Performa 5260 to reload to later hardware?

We have a Performa 5260 (from 1996 or 97), OS 7.5.3, with specialised software for medical application. Need to upgrade to much later software, preferably current.
Can download to floppies but then need to copy to CD to upload into later model? Advice suggests "language needs to be translated to more current language". Cost of replacing the entire system is prohibitive, so if we had to do the Mac upgrade in several steps it would still be much less costly.
Suggestions MOST welcome, thank you!

Thank you, one and ALL, for your replies. I'm sorry not to have responded sooner. I'll make this post a general cover of the situation, then go back to answer the specifics where I can.
I'm a registered nurse and highly computer literate as an operator: Office, Word, Excel (am a spreadsheet queen according to my family!). At home we have PCs. But when it comes to the tricky questions I defer to my technical-brained husband.
I work for a Consultant Surgeon who specialises in Cancer work, including Breast and Bowel Cancer and other disorders. The Performa 5260 (manufactured in 1996) is part of a dedicated system, built by an Australian company for measuring muscle pressures by water perfused manometry. Unfortunately Neo-Medix no longer supports ano-rectal manometry, specializing now in urodynamics. I refuse to go into detail of what I do for obvious reasons! I hope that’s adequate information. – not too little and not too much!!
I’ve operated the machine since 1997 and know its workings intimately, except for anything under the cover
It is not in the budget to replace the system, for which we’ve had quotes for around $50,000 give or take $10,000-$20000 according to how many bells and whistles we want.
The option is to move the software to another Mac .. whichever available model will accept the software. This needs to happen before the Performa expires. It no longer has a printer and I’m using the last of our spare mouses! (or is it “mice”?) We do happen to have a second Performa, acquired from a colleague who converted to another system. But unfortunately the AnoMac software is configured differently from what we’re accustomed to, so hasn’t been helpful for anything other than spare parts for the rest of the apparatus.
Hence my call for help to this forum.
Many thanks again for all offerings. Between my technical-brained husband and our ultra-technical-brained American son-in-law in Seattle, the information will be carefully sifted and applied as appropriate! But neither of them knows a huge amount about Macs, as we’re all PC people.
There will be other questions I’m sure.
And I'll endeavour to answer specific questions on individual responses to my posts.

  • HT4796 How can I take the files that were migrated from my PC to my Mac and add all those files to my current user instead of having 2 users?

How can I take the files that were migrated from my PC to my Mac and add all those files to my current user instead of having 2 users? Having to log out just to sign in on a different user to access the files is absurd.
Do I make all the files sharable to all the NOW users on the mac then just delete the files? Or can i erase my account that I made when starting up my new mac and then just use the one with the transferred files?
I just dont want to have to og in and out of 2 different accounts .. Help please.

Sorry. /Users is a folder path. It would be similar to C:\Users (if that exists on Windows).
So, in the Finder, select Computer from the Go menu.
You'll see Macintosh HD, double-click that to open it.
In there you'll see several folders. One is Users. That is where all the user Home folders exist. Select the other account's home folder and go to step 3.
If you have any more confusion, please stop and ask. We'll get there.
If you feel more comfortable, you can just log into that other account and move the files into /Users/Shared.
Then, log into the account you wish to use and copy the files from the Shared folder and paste them into your Home folder, wherever they belong, Documents, Music, Pictures, etc.  That just takes a little more work. Transferring them into Shared, and then copying into your home sets the permissions on the files so that you won't have a problem accessing them later. The steps I provided just prevent you from having to do the double move, since you are not going to use the old account once you are done.
Quick unix shorthand. If someone gives you a file path that begins with a /, that means the root of the hard drive, ie Macintosh HD (if you haven't renamed it). The path separator in unix is /, not \.
A path that starts with ~/ means your Home folder, the one inside /Users named with your account name.

  • Can you take the back off of the iphone 4 to get to the battery, if so how, mine has no screws at all

i plugged my phone into itunes and my phone is in recovery mode, is ther a way i can just take the back off and take the battery out, i tried looking for videos on youtube but all the phones had screws on the outside where mine does not.

You cannot remove the iPhone battery. The screws are pentalobe screws which need a special screwdriver and they are located on the bottom of the iPhone on each side of the 30 pin connector port.
Disconnect the iPhone from the USB cable and press and hold the Home and Power buttons together until the Apple logo appears.

Unfortunately not. The USB adapter is only for importing photos and videos. Exporting is not supported.

it had to do with Maverick/Aperture not supporting the same date formats as before in Smart Albums when I upgraded.
Smart albums based on dates have always been problematic, if you use smart settings that require a date string to be entered. How the date string will be interpreted, will depend on your settings in the System Preferences > Language&Text > Advanced > Dates formats and the "Region".
It is much safer to use "Calendar" rules in Aperture instead of "Date" rules with date-strings. Calendar rules will remain valid, if the region settings are changed in the System preferences.

  • How can I take firefox 4 off my computer, since downloading having other problems that I didnt before

I had to download firefox 4 in order to download a picture, but since downloading it, I am having other problems with my computer so I want to take it off...how can I go about doing so? Thank you

#Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, scroll down to "Mozilla Firefox" and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
#Then reboot and delete the folder called "Mozilla Firefox" at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
This will retain your bookmarks, customizations etc., so that if you reinstall Firefox at a later date, these will become available to you again. If you don't want to retain that data, checkmark the box mentioned in step #1

  • Can't open iMovie files off of external hard drive?

The hard drive is the My Passport for Mac. I've backed up my hard drive on it and that worked and I can open other types of files off of it? I moved the files to it in finder. The hard drive shows up in iMovie as a folder but it is empty. Does anyone know why they aren't working?

For a drive to work with iMovie, it must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). You can format using Disk Utility, but reformatting will erase anything that is currently on the drive.
The My Passport drives are slow and bus powered, if I recall correctly, so the performance will not be great either.
Also, you should move all your projects and events back where they wer, and then do the moves from within iMovie so you do not lose your work.

  • Problems downloading a program/file off the internet, end up as Excel files

When I attempt to download a program or a file off the internet, and save it to disk it appears as an unreadable excel spreadsheet on my desktop. What is going on?

    Hi, Mary.
    1. Can you provide an example, such as a URL / link to a file you have attempted to download?
    2. See my "Resetting Launch Services" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • Should I (and can I) delete Program Files (x86) folder in Windows 7?

I installed Windows 7 32 bit over a Windows Vista 64 bit computer. I had to reinstall all applications (Office, etc.) and they were installed in the new folder 'Program files'. Can I just delete the old 'Program Files (X86)' folder? Should I do that? Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
It is impossible to upgrade a 64-bit operating system to a 32-bit operating system, no matter it is an OEM disk or not.
Windows 7 32-bit does not include the “Program Files (x86)” folder. Only the 64-bit operating systems have it. In this case, the 64-bie operating system is Windows Vista 64-bit.
In addition, if you performed a Clean Install for Windows 7 32-bit on the old system (Windows Vista 64-bit) partition, the old system files should be saved in C:\Windows.old folder.
So, Folk70, did you perform a Clean Install for Windows 7 32-bit on another hard disk drive? After logging into Windows 7 32-bit, then you found the “Program Files (x86)” folder in the Windows Vista 64-bit system partition?
If not, would you please upload the following information to SkyDrive and provide us the link for analyzing?

  • Can I take ilife 08 off my mac??

    Hi ya'll
does anyone know if you can take ilife 08 off my macbook and put it on my imac (which is about three years old and running ilife 05 i think)?
The story is we were just given the imac and my macbook was the main computer and ilife 08 is a good way to look after photos and stuff. But i want to make the imac the main computer and swap everything from the macbook to the imac. Problem is the ilife software that came with the imac is totally useless compared to what I'm used to on the macbook.
So i guess I just want to swap the imacs ilife 05 onto the macbook and take the macbooks ilife 08 and whack it onto the imac.
I hope there's an easy solution
    Cheers
    nic

    Sort of
the license allows you to run one copy of each so it does not matter which machine you run iPhoto '08 on and which you run iPhoto 5 on
The problem is that you can not just move it - you need to install it for it to work right and your MB disks will not install on your iMac - do you have the iLife '08 disk or just the system restore disks?
If you have the iLife '08 disk then you can simply install it on your and remove it from your MB (although unless you have the iLife 5 disks you have the same installation issue with it)
It may turn out that simply purchasing iLife '08 for your iMac is the best and easiest and will give you the same iLife packages on both machines - which you probably will end up wanting
