Can I transfer files wirelessly from PC to Macbook Pro?

Hi all,
I'm new to this, so please treat me gently - also, I'll say straight away that I'm not computer savvy, but I love my MacBook Pro.
I have an old Viao laptop running Windows XP, but the screen broke ages and I want to dispose of the laptop (I had to have it for my studies, but my uni now are able to share their files to Macs).
When the screen broke, I was able to move quite a few files to mem stick as I could see some of the screen. I would like to move the rest to my MacBook Pro, and then, hopefully, wipe my old laptop, remotely (I know - I don't want much!). So, obviously, my question is, 'Is it possible?', and 'How do I do it?'.
I charged up the old laptop today, in the hope of my MacBook Pro 'finding' it wirelessly like it did when I transferred files my old Powerbook G4 (that was so easy) before I sold it.
I'm nervous of altering too many things as I'm disabled, and rely on my Mac for virtually everything. Also, I find having to do, or think too much sometimes, because of my disability, please could you keep instructions low tech, and do-able.
I look forward to your replies - if you've managed to stay awake through my ramblings, but I've tried to give as much info as I can to enlist your help.
Thank you

  • How can I transfer Microsoft office from my old macbook pro to macbook air

how can I transfer microsoft office from macbook pro to macbook air?

Assuming you have the 2011 version the easiest way is go to Microsoft's Web site and download Mac Office 2011 onto your MacBook Air and then run it. If you have the 2008 (or the 2011) version on disc you can turn on DVD sharing in the Sharing control panel of your MBP and install it by remotely sharing your MBP's DVD.
Since Microsoft uses activation when you start Office on the new computer if you use the same activation code as you used on the MBP you'll probably get a message to call Microsoft. Do so and just explain that you got a new computer.

We're talking some photos? You can export them from iPhoto to a USB flash drive form the iMac and import them into iPhoto on the MBP. That's one way.

I have a MacBook pro that has power issues and will not start but the hardrive is fine.  I do not want to lose all of my files so I was wondering if it's possible to transfer my hardrive from a older Macbook pro to a new one if I were to purchase a new one?  Also, the software is not updated as the computer hasn't worked for about 2 months.
Also, if it is possible to transfer the hardrive, would my iTunes music transfer as well?  It is not saved in the cloud.
Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

You computer is probably perfectly repairable, but if you want a new one anyway, it is perfectly possible to transfer the data from the faulty one.
But it would be a mistake to simply put the old HD in the new computer.
    These are the steps:
Remove Hard drive from faulty computer. (very easy on Unibody MBPs, do-able but not so easy on older MBPs)
Put it in a cheap enclosure
    Connect it the new computer
    Boot up new computer.
If the new computer has never been run before the Setup Assistant will ask if you want to import your apps, data, settings etc from either another mac, another HD connected to the Mac or a Time Machine back up.
Obviously chose the second option (another HD connected to this Mac) and follow prompts.
If the new computer has already been run (so Setup Assistant doesn't run when you boot it up), you will need to use Migration Assistant...or run the installer again so that Setup Assistant runs again.

I can't transfer my info from my old Macbook (Year 2006) to my new MacBook Pro. The Fire Wire Cable changed !
Excuse my English, I am French writing from Paris, France
    Thanks

All you need, if you've the non-Retina model, is a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable -> such as this one from Amazon.
I know that there's a UK Amazon - can you order from there? Or is there a French Amazon as well?
    Good luck,

how can i transfer my calendar from iphone to macbook? Sync is not working!, how can i transfer my calendar from iphone to macbook? Sync is not working!

If the calendar is connected to a server account, like Exchange, you cannot sync via iTunes. You need to connect to the server on your MacBook.
If it is not connected to a server account then you need to ensure syncing is set up in iTunes. This is in the Info tab for your selected phone in iTunes.

    Hi brotherbrown,
A direct FireWire transfer (especially if it's 800 to 800) is going to be the fastest method. TimeCapsule would work, if you connect to it via Ethernet, via wireless it would be quite slow (especially if you have a large library).

You can't sync across accounts, so:
In Contacts select all the contacts (1 account at a time) and choose File>Export>vCard),
then on your wifes Air do the reverse, select File>Import.

  • HT204144 File transfer using Airdrop from iphone to Macbook Pro

File transfer using airdrop form Macbook Pro to iphone is working...but from iphone to Macbook Pro is not working, Why?

    Hi Brok25;
Thanks for the question.  The resource below explains the specs and settings that are needed for AirDrop.  Check the settings and look to see if your MacBook Pro is listed.
Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203106
Sending files to and from an older Mac
If a Mac you're using with AirDrop was manufactured before 2012, you can send and receive files with other Mac computers.
On the sending Mac, click "Don't see who you're looking for" in the AirDrop window.
Select the option to "Search for an Older Mac."
On the receiving Mac, open a new Finder window and click AirDrop in the sidebar.
    Tips for sending files
Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on your Mac and your iOS device. Although you don't have to connect to a specific network, Wi-Fi needs to be on to send and receive files using AirDrop.
Move your devices closer together. AirDrop is designed to work within a range of approximately 30 feet (9 meters). If you need to send a file to someone farther away, consider using File Sharing, iCloud, or email instead.
If you're using a firewall on your Mac, you won't be able to receive AirDrop files if you have enabled "Block all incoming connections" in the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences.
Make sure your devices meet system requirements for AirDrop.
    System Requirements
To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.
To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need the Mac models listed below with Wi-Fi turned on and OS X Lion or later installed.
MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
    MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*
    iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)
*The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.
For help identifying your Mac, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu. You can refer to the Apple Support website to find out if your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch includes a lightning connector.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

  • How can I migrate iPhoto library from an old MacBook Pro to a new one?

When the hard drive on my MacBook Pro 13 needed to be wiped clean, I restored all my files from Time Machine except for my iPhoto files. Not sure why my iPhoto library wasn't restored, but it wasn't, and I can't find it on my Time Capsule. I want to move my partial iPhoto library from my old MacBook Pro to my new one. I understand this is possible by linking them in some way. What is that way?

There are three ways; using File Sharing over a network, transferring them via an external drive, or using FireWire Target Disk mode. If you use file sharing, use the AFP protocol. If you use an external drive, it or a partition or disk image on it needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended.

Is there a way to abort a transfer of data from an old MacBook to a new MacBook Pro when you're using Wi-Fi?

If you are sure you want to to do it: command + option + esc, then and Force Quit.
ethernet is much faster than wifi.

  • Is it possible to transfer file wirelessly from pc to ipad(like you do with usb through itune)? not syncing and backup

So basically i want the exact same thing/function of using a usb to transfer file from pc to ipad through itunes but wirelessly? for example i am using kindle and playerxtreme(video app) on ipad air and i have some file i want to add. normally i would connect the ipad and pc through usb and transfer file with itunes but is there anyway where i can use wifi to transfer file with itunes instead of having to use the usb cable?

It is possible if your device runs iOS 5 or newer version and you're using iTunes 10.5 or newer. It's called WiFi sync https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203075
I find it useless because in order to sync, your device must be charging (plugged in). I figure if I have to charge the device (plugged in to the charger) to sync wirelessly, I may as well plug it in to the computer. Sync speed is a lot faster over USB connection anyway.

  • Wireless transfer of photos from camera to Macbook Pro (help)

Im sorry if this might not be the correct place to ask about it but Im going to give it a try.
I know this can be done because professionals are doing it across the globe already.
I just purchased a Canon 50D along with a WFT-E3A wireless transmitter. I shoot professional Lacrosse in Chicago and for the first time will be trying out the possibility of sending photos straight from my camera to my new Macbook Pro. If this works then my next purchase is going to be the WFT-E2 and a Canon 1D MK III to complete the process.
The main idea is that I will be doing shooting all over the arena and just sending them back to my laptop and having my assistant taking care of post processing of them and then uploading to a website.
But now comes the fun part.
Because this is one step above me setting up a normal wireless network like I have at home for me to get onto the internet. I don't really know where to start on setting up a specific network and configuring it to just have the camera and computer "talk" to each other.
My thoughts are that I would like to have one specific network setup for my laptop at the games when shooting. And then just bring it back home and switch it back over to the normal network I have set up to get my internet wirelessly.
I have been talking with several Genius people here in Madison and was told there are two types of networks to set up, Ad Hoc and Infrastructure.
I have been told to set it up an infrastructure network because this is going to give me widest range for me to be further away from my computer.
The question that is puzzling most of the Genius people and myself is this. Should I have one or several base stations placed somewhere in the arena between me and the computer helping me out so I don't lose signal between the two devices?
If that is the case how would I set up the base station in order to relay or transmit the signal from my laptop to my camera?
After I get this portion all set up I think it isn't going to be an issue of getting the camera to talk with my laptop. But that is another issue that I will need to pose to other photographers or maybe a canon rep directly.
    Ok Im all ears now!
    Thanks,
    Ross

There is more than one date that can be associated with an image, and I think you're running into different programs displaying different dates. This is not a comprehensive list but:
Capture date: Date and time the photo was recorded by the camera clock, stored in EXIF camera data.
Created date: Date and time the photo was first saved to disk by photo software on a computer
Modified date: Date and time the edited photo was last saved to disk by photo software on a computer
Archived date: I'm not really sure but I see this in detailed photo information too.
Furthermore, these dates can be stored in various additional date fields in other IPTC metadata sections, and various software might not write or read them in the same ways as other software.
But what I think is going on in your case is that the iPhoto Info panel is displaying the Capture Date from the camera recorded EXIF data, but what you see in the Finder are the Created and Modified dates.
If I'm right, then LexSchellings' column suggestion may not work because all you would get is the File Created date, not the camera recorded Capture Date. I do not know of a way to display camera EXIF capture date in the Finder. Generally, organizing photos using that data is done using a photo management app like iPhoto, Picasa, Apple Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, Media Pro, etc., not on the desktop.
If you were able to view the Capture Date in Windows Explorer, then that's an advantage that Windows Explorer (the desktop) had over the Finder. I've seen other cases where the Finder couldn't do something Windows Explorer could, so I wouldn't be surprised.
As far as the duplicates, I don't really know but I did a search at macupdate.com and you might want to check some of these utilities that can help resolve duplicates.
    MacUpdate search on "duplicate photo"
macupdate.com is a great place to look for Mac software if you didn't find it in the Mac App Store.
