My macbook Is completely dead.Ive had my old macbook since 2009. This is will soon be my 3rd time buying a new charger for it because it is not charging. Ive given up today and I will instead buy a new mac. I want to buy a macbook pro, but I dont know if I can move the important files fromthe old macbook to the ew one. CAN I DO THIS?

If it's really "completely dead" you would need to remove its hard disk and install it in its own enclosure.
Removing the disk drive is not particularly difficult. USB hard disk enclosures are very inexpensive; often less than $10. Write back if you require recommendations.
If it's not really completely dead, but can run if it's connected to power, you can use FireWire Target Disk Mode.

Describe exactly what you did when it failed and the error message you received that told you it failed. Dragging and dropping files from one drive to another will work. Having said that however, you need to be aware that trying to copy items with the same name will result in a warning dialog box offering several different options including canceling.
To better help you it would also be helpful to know about the external drive. Did you use TimeMachine to back up to that external drive? Did you copy files from another computer to the drive?

I have a Firewire cable and Thunderbolt adapter, but no icons showing either Mac appear on either desktop.

The fastest way is to use Carbon Copy Cloner and a external drive formatted GUID OS X Ext. J in Disk Utlilty, then connecting to the new Mac and using Migration Assistant in the Utilites folder.
Even faster, if you can determine your going to replace all the apps from fresh sources anyway (like if the older Mac's OS X verison is old thus the apps) then just use a external drive and copy just your files to it, then connect to the new Mac and transfer over.
Some apps you can just grab the registration code and install it fresh on the new machine with the old code, talk to the developer about transfering the program, as long as it's deleted on the older Mac in the process.
It used to be Firewire Target disk mode was fastest, but since Thunderbolt came out...

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your phone. Only if you back up manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

Hello, thank you for your prompt answer. I did have an idea that Home sharing might be the answer but could not quite figure out how to do it. I have enabled home sharing in my iTunes account, put in username and password, clicked on creat etc. But the homs sharing icon doew not appear in the left side of iTunes. So I got stuck. Are you sure of that? Check in the Library. Click on the Apps icon to see all apps. Similarly click on the Music icon to see the songs.

if the music was downloaded via iTunes you will be able to access it from iCloud when you set up the new device. other music that was synced to the iPhone would need to be synced to the new iPhone from the computer that you used to sync the iPhone 4.
photos can be transferred via the following method.
plug iPhone 4 into iTunes on computer. select back up to computer.
Plug in the iPhone 6 and press restore. when setting up the iPhone press restore from iTunes. plug into computer and a complete copy of the iPhone 4 will be put onto the iPhone 6. except for the music...(you will have to download your apps again from App Store but you can find them all under the purchased tab on App Store. you won't have to pay for the apps again)
please note this will delete the current memory on iPhone 6

I got an ipad 2 running on iOS6 and I'ld like to put my photos and songs from my old computer (mac Osx 10.4.11) to my ipad. The trouble is that Ipad needs itunes 10.6.3 at least and that my computer can't receive this version as it is running on 10.4.11.
Would anyone have a solution to that problem?

For photos: You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

Did you use Migration Assistant? If you set up your new Mac first, you created a user account and when you used MA later, it transferred over the old one. The only way to avoid that is to use Setup Assistant at the beginning of the setup. I used MA once and spent a long time getting rid of duplicates - you can either do that manually or start over: use recovery (Command + R or Command + Option + R keys) during startup, go to Utilities > Disk Utility, erase your disk and download/install again. While going through the setup, use Setup Assistant - it will port over your one and only user account rather than create another.
