Can I-Tunes cope with multiple I-Pods?

Hi. I want to purchase another I-Pod (5G) but am concerned that if I do, the version of I-Tunes I have on my PC will be shared with the (2G) older version I have. My main worry is that if the I-Tunes works with the 2G machine today, will it work for the 5G machine?
Also, assuming that they can work together, how are the same music files be shared across two versions of i-tunes?

Just my personal testimony. In my household, we have five different iPod products (two 6GB minis, two 4GB nanos, one 15 GB really old i-pod) that we load/unload, etc. using one iTunes installation. One caveat--our library has well over 30,000 songs--so all of our iPods are set to manually update. We create new playlists and then install them on the various music players. All of the users have different tastes and music preferences, but it seems to work well. [Oh, by the way--I'm the only one updating the iPods. I make the playlists (based upon user preference) and then update the iPods. From experience, I've learned that you do have to know what you're doing to make sure this works correctly.]

Lion - Can it cope with multiple screens yet?

I have two screens attached to my iMac. It's terrific how MacOS Expose deals with them up 10.6.8 as compared with my PC at work. At home, amongst other things, iMovie immediately knows whether or not my second monitor is attached and plays footage back on my second display leaving my main monitor for iMovie editing. It does this of it own accord with no intervention from me.
At work on the PC I can't even pursuade the machine to keep its windows displayed together on the correct screen without having to constantly mouse them around.
I have head that 10.7 (Lion) can't cope with multiple displays any more so for this reason, and one or two others that I won't go into here, I have resisted the urge to upgrade.
Can anyone confirm that this is true and, now that some time has passed,whether or not Lion has now been updated to recover this functionality?

Seems I was incorrect. One can use a second monitor as an extended desktop on an iMac with Lion installed.

There are several different services that require signing into an Apple ID to use on your iOS device. You can sign into different Apple IDs for different services on your iPhone. For example, Apple ID #1 for iCloud and Apple ID #2 for iTunes & App Store. You cannot sign into the same service with two different Apple IDs at the same time. Can Apple TV work with Multiple TV's?

Is there a way to hook one Apple TV up to multiple TV's to view video's at the same time? Like have one in the bedroom and one in the living room???

Yes, you can. I have my Apple TV, DVD, and Cablebox hooked up to 6 televisions, plus audio wall controls in several rooms.
Whatever output you are using, you are going to need to split the signal and also amplify it - otherwise you'll lose signal quality. So, you need a Distributor / Amplifier that will take whatever input you want to provide it from your Apple TV and give you with multiple amplified outputs to run to different TVs.
I also had the constraint of wanting to use existing co-axial cable (i.e. a standard TV antena cable) to transmit the signal because that's what I already have run to multiple rooms. For this part, you would need an "Apple TV S-Video Converter" (do a Google search on that for a vendor). This takes the component video out from your Apple TV and converts it to an S-Video signal (i.e. a composite video signal that you can run over co-axial cable). It's true that composite video isn't as good as HDMI or component video connections, but it's perfectly workable and it makes everything else easier and less expensive presuming that you'd otherwise have to run new cables.
A final thing worth considering is a remote IR solution (such as Powermid) so that you can control your Apple TV from any room in the house.

Architecture/Engineering Student - can a MBP cope with the programs I need?

I'm thinking of buying a MBP(r?) for Uni as my old Vaio is struggling to cope. I study structural engineering and architecture, and so will need it to be able to cope with running programs such as Vectorworks, AutoCAD, MATLAB, Photoshop, Illustrator etc. Obviously portability is a neccessity, but I don't whether to go for the MBPr 13" and upgrade (is it necessary?) or the normal 15"? I can't really afford the MBPr 15" so will the other to be able to cope?
Also will the graphics card in the 13" be good enough?

Blue Plum, you need to sift the information you are getting very carefully. The PC and Mac are not the same, they may use the same components in the sense that they both use cpus, gpus, memory, mass storage, internet intervase cards, but that is as far as it goes. The cpus are NOT the same. The Mac uses much higher end cpus in all of their equipment than any entry level PC. When Apple announced it would switch to the Intel cpu seven years ago the president of Intel said at the press conference that Intel was looking forward to a close relationship with Apple developing advanced processors. The Intel processors used by Apple ever since have been much higher grade than normally available.
Three years ago I had to buy a Dell PC laptop for supposed compatibility with my office network. That machine was half the price of a MacBook Pro...but, when I priced raising the CPU, graphics, network interface card, memory, and hard drive to be equal to the MBP, the cost of the Dell was actually greater than the MBP. Yes they both use cpus, etc., but they are NOT the same no matter what anyone might tell you.
The MBP runs very well off an external hard drive...I run my MBP booting to either the internal drive or an external drive on which I have two different versions of operating systems. I also have an iMac with which I do the same thing. Both machines are fast and efficient booting either internal or external. Makes little difference with the fast ports now available.
There is also a huge difference in operation between a PC and a Mac...the PC takes between 15 and 30 minutes to startup, scan for viruses, download software upgrades (Windows is upgraded almost daily) and be ready for me to work. The Mac starts up and is ready in under one minute...not what I call the same.
Final point, you can boot a Mac using either Mac OS X or Windows...the Mac is happy doing either. You can NOT boot a PC using Mac OS X...will not work. So the Mac gives you the option of using native Mac software or native Windows software...an option you do not get going the other way.

How can I share Catalog with multiple users?

I have Mac OSX 10.7.5
The catalog exists on a shared LOCAL folder that other users have read-write access to
The catalog works fine for the 1st user (no issues viewing, tagging, or updating photos & repairing it yields no issues)
However when I try to open this catalog with any other user I receive an error that the catalog may be corrupt and therefore cannot be opened...
Has anyone been able to share their catalog with multiple users on a Mac?

If anyone runs into the same issue - I figured out why it wasn't working for me. Turns out it was actually an issue with folder permissions.
Despite the catalog being in a shared folder that all users can read/write to - Macs apparently don't understand inheritance & I needed to set the same read/write access to every sub-folder (the catalog folder & all of it's sub folders) as well.
This fixed my issue.
The Catalog is now shared between multiple users on the local drive with all the photos/videos stored on a NAS drive.

Shuffle - can it be used with multiple winXP computers???

Can my shuffle be used with multiple computers without losing songs that are on one library and not the other?
I keep seeing references to "manage files manually" but I don't see that option for my shuffle settings. I just lost my songs when I plugged it in to my computer at work...

The problem is that you are using application-identity. When you
specify an objectid-class, we treat is automatically as application
identity. To resolve this, I would recommend removing both the
objectid-class and identity-type atributes from your class. With
"objectid-class" in place, we asssume that you wil take care of identity.

Can't submit form with multiple signatures

I have a form with multiple signatures. I've enabled Reader Rights. After the first signature signs, the user must save the document. When the document is saved, then the user cannot submit the form to the next signer. Is there a way to change how this is working?

Did you design the form with Adobe Designer? Assuming you did, when you add a signature field, there is a property enabled by default that "Locks all fields" after signing. A submit button is also considered a field so it will be locked after the first signature is applied.
You need to either disable this property (I would not recommend this) or create field collections that are assigned to specific signature fields. A field collection controls which fields are locked by each signature field when signed.

How to use one I-tunes library with multiple windows users (family) on 1 pc

On our family pc we log in with different accounts. We want to use I-Tunes but all have the same library. I tried to create a library not in the users directory, but in the All Users folder that is accessible for everyone. However, when I import the music in the library for one user and set the same location for another user, I-tunes does not recognize the library. So everyone has to create it's own library.
What are the best practices to overcome this?

Keep in mind that what you have done now is you have multiple iTunes libraries accessing the same media folder. Meaning, that each account can have their own ratings, playlists, etc. but more importantly, each account does NOT know what the other account does, so if your daughter adds a CD to her account, it will go into the shared folder, but it will NOT automatically go into your wife's iTunes library. She would have to add it manually. Likewise, if one account deletes music from their library and tells iTunes to remove it to the trash, the other accounts will not know and iTunes will still try to access the file from the shared location even though the file is now trashed.
Each account has their own database files (.itl files in the iTunes folder) which stores this stuff.
If you want to have everyone use the exact same library which means the same ratings, playlists, etc. then you need to move the database files into that same location and set each iTunes account to read the same data.

Create multiple copies with multiple develop settings in one keystroke (like PS action)?

Hi,
I'm trying to move over from PS to LR in my tourist photo studio (it's easier to train employees, it's more intuitive, it's cheaper, etc.). However, there is one element missing that I simply can't do without. We're located in a theme park and we handle A LOT of people in a day so we're are a very fast paced studio, I like to call it fast food photography. Customers come in, have their photos taken, pick them out immediately and get prints right away (hopefully all in less than half an hour). I've always used Photoshop actions to make everything very fast and efficient (afterall, the less time we spend tinkering on a computer the more time we can spend interacting with our guests). As of now, customers get to pick the finish of their photo so I have an action that creates four layers, each with a different effect (b&w, antique, desaturated, full color). We then can click the layers on and off to show the customer what each finish looks like. I've been trying to replicate this in LR without any luck. The best I can figure out is to use virtual copies and create a preset for each effect. However, we simply don't have the time to click "create virtual copy" three times in succession then select each one and apply a different preset to create the four effects for one image. Esepcially since each customer usually buys multiple images we'd have to do that many times for just one sitting. It seems simple in theory, but the amount of time it takes to create 3-18+ virtual copies each with different presets applied adds up drastically. Clicking a function key for each image is an amazing time saver. The focus of our business is very customer oriented, and we've tried our best to create a workflow where we face our guests more than we face our computer monitors. If anyone knows of anyway to accomplish what I described in PS in an equally efficient manner in LR that would be wonderful. Perhaps there's a tactic I haven't thought of yet.

What you describe cannot be done directly in Lr, i.e. there is - unfortunately - no way to create multiple Virtual Copies (VC) with one command.
But in Lr you don't need multiple VCs. If you have created presets for each "look" you can just apply one "look", i.e one preset after the other the one-and-the-same VC. And you can apply the "looks" i.e. presets in any order and go back-and-forth numerous times. Since the Lr edits are not pixel edits but parametric (only a set of data in the Lr database = catalog), there is no harm done if you apply the same set of presets numerous times in various order. In Photoshop you would switch layers on and off (maybe you use layer comps), in Lr you would switch from one preset to the other for the same VC - or even for the original.
And, you can always go back to the original state the photo was in when it was imported.
If the customer likes one preset, just switch over to the Print Module, apply your Print Preset and print. If the customer likes three presets, go back to the Develop Module click on the other preset, go back to the Print Module ... go back to the Develop Module, click on the third preset .... etc.
PS: I bet Lr could be even faster than Photoshop

How can I use airplay with multiple speakers from my iPod?

I recently purchased a bluetooth wireless speaker in hopes that, while the ipod is docked on a speaker system, I can listen to my music from both set of speakers. Is there anyway to use multiple speakers with my ipod through the airplay system or an app that I can download to enhance my music listening experience?

It strikes me that it should be possible to do that (or something similar) by building a safari extension, TC. Both Sessions and SafariRestore are able to launch multiple tabs from a previous session, so it seems like you should be able to create an extension that launches multiple tabs open to specific sites when Safari is launched.

Can we create JTable with multiple rows with varying number of columns ?

I came across a very typical problem related to JTable. My requirement is that cells should be added dynamically to the JTable. I create a JTable with initial size of 1,7 (row, columns) size. Once the 7 columns are filled with data, a new row should be created. But the requirement is, the new row i.e. second row should have only one cell in it initially. The number of cells should increase dynamically as the data is entered. The table is automatically taking the size of its previous row when new row is added. I tried by using setColumnCount() to change the number of columns to '1' for the second row but the same is getting applied to the first row also.
So can you please help me out in this regard ? Is it possible to create a JTable of uneven size i.e. multiple rows with varying number of columns in each row ?

Well a JTable is always going to paint the same number of columns for each row. Anything is possible if you want to rewrite the JTable UI to do this, but I wouldn't recommend it. (I certainly don't know how to do it).
A simpler solution might be to override the isCellEditable(...) method of JTable and prevent editing of column 2 until data in column 1 has been entered etc., etc. You may also want to provide a custom renderer that renderers the empty column differently, maybe with a grey color instead of a white color.
