Can I turn off Autocomplete in iOS 8?

I am legally blind, so the iPhone has always been my smart phone of choice. The keyboard input has always worked great for me and my awful vision. Not that it is easier to see, but it worked well with my sloppy typing as a result of my bad vision. Now that iOS 8 is out, all of that has gone down the drain. Because I can't see well, I cannot keep track of my typing and what it is coming up with at the same time. Now it insists on completing words that I am still typing, which results in two or three completely unrelated words. That is the worst part of the new keyboard behavior; I'm not even going to go into the random new autocorrects it comes up with, or why every proper noun in existence needs to be in all caps. I think I'm "training" it to get rid of all that nonsense. I just want my iPhone to stop finishing my words for me. I miss the iOS 7 and older keyboards. This is highly frustrating. Can anyone give me any insight on how to possibly fix this? I have an iPhone 5C.

Will that stop it from completing my words? I know I can turn off the predictive suggestions, but that's not the issue. I can choose not to take its advice. What's bothering me is that it just completes my words while I'm typing. If disabling the suggestions of predictive text will fix that, then great, but I was told somewhere else that they are unrelated. As far as autocorrection, I usually don't mind that because it fixes my sloppy typing. There are times it annoys me, but the benefits outweigh the annoyances. I just want to type words, then it decide what to do with them, but not halfway through where it comes up with something totally different, if not two or three words. Thank you for helping!

  • How can I turn off Privacy in iOS 8.2

HHow do I make my ipad2 work normally again after updating to iOS 8.2.  How can I turn the privacy off.  Thank you Teresa

I Still do not understand what you mean when you ask "how can I make my iPad operate normally again?" That seems to have no relation at all to using the privacy settings.
However, you do not have to allow any apps to have access to the items in the Privacy Settings. But remember that you may be limiting functionality in those apps if you don't allow access.
For instance, go to Settings>Privacy>Microphone. See which apps have requested access to the iPad mic. Let's say that Google is tuned on in that setting. You can turn it off but then you will not be able to ask Google questions - you cannot use voice prompts in Google if you turn it off. All of those items work the same way, if you have another calendar app that you want to use along with the built in calendar - if you allow the other calendar app access to the iPad calendar, you can keep both calendars in sync.
You ou have to decide what you want to allow other apps to have access to on your iPad.

How can I turn off Recently Visited Websites when opening new Safari window?
After tapping on the two overlapping boxes on the bottom right of Safari, a new blank window appears with Favorites, but now in iOS 8, recently viewed websites are listed. How can I turn this function off? I do NOT want my new Safari windows to have history displayed of previous websites I visited. I only want my Favorites (on the top) to be displayed. Please help.
Thank you for your time, patience, understanding, kindness, and concern.

Thanks for replying, but that isn't the answer I am looking for.  Also, there is no + sign, UNLESS you do tap the overlapping boxes.
Let me try to ask my question a little more clearly:
When I tap the two overlapping boxes on the lower left (the option to Open New Windows), the new Window that appears will show your Bookmarked FAVORITES. But with my new iPhone 6, and the new iOS 8.0.2, when I tap the two boxes to open a New Window, my Bookmark Favorites show (as they always have and should), but below them, there is a dividing line underneath them, and it says Recently Viewed Websites, and has these websites available to tap.
So my question is, HOW DO I TURN THESE OPTION OFF?
*UPDATE  (10.13.14): Since I have asked this question, I no longer see these Recently Viewed Websites under my Bookmarked Favorites in my new Window tabs. So I hope that Apple fixed it, or somehow it was a mistake, or somehow I changed an Option on my iPhone 6 that stopped this for reoccurring.
Thank you for your help bobseufert! I appreciate your concern, kindness, and the time to try to help. I am grateful.
    Have a blessed day.

  • How can I turn off the autocomplete (the one summoned by Esc key)?

    Dear All, please help!
Somehow Escape button started bringing me an autocomplete list in Keynote which is monstrously inconvenient.
I am NOT using tables, I am working with a mere text box. Usually Escape would make me exit the text box, now it offers to insert all the words the Dictionary knows.
It doesn't work this way for Pages, but in the TextEdit it's all the same.
    Thank you!
    Vasily.

    This is rather surprising.
What you are describing is a feature called "word completion", provided by the Cocoa text engine, and hence used by apps which rely on it, including iWork, TextEdit, and others. When you are typing, or the insertion point is in a suitable position, pressing ⎋, or ⌥⎋, or F5 brings up the word completion list. Of course, it only works if there are suitable words in the list. For instance, if you type "Schad", intending to write "Schadenfreude", you can press ⎋ as much as you wish and nothing will come up. But type "Zeit" and then ⎋, and you'll get "Zeitgeist" sure enough.
What is surprising is that you describe it as if you had just came across it, whereas it has been available for years (although I believe that originally it was activated only by ⌥⎋). iWork (including Keynote) is a little different, because, in addition to ⎋, ⌥⎋, and F5, word completion is also activated by ⌘⎋.
I don't know how to turn off this feature, if indeed it can be turned off.
Usually Escape would make me exit the text box
Is there any chance you mis-remember? The Keynote shortcut for exiting text editing and selecting the text box is ⌘↩ (command-return).

  • How can I turn off the autocomplete/autofill function in Mail?

How can I turn off the autocomplete / autofill function in Mail (Mail 7.2)? I know how to remove email addresses from the 'Previous recipient' list, but I simply want to deactivate the autocomplete function for email addresses entirely.
You used to be able to do this via Mail - Preferences - Composing, but I upgraded to Mavericks today, and the option to deactivate the autocomplete funtion for email addresses is no longer there.
Does anyone know where to find it?
Thanks in advance for your feedback,
    Tine

  • Can i turn off the option that enables iOS 8 to connect to my apple tv without using wifi?

I am a schoolteacher and our school uses Apple-tv to project lesson contents. We have separated the students wifi network from the teachers wifi network, so our students won't be able to use the apple-tv's and disrupt our lessons.
Since the introduction of ios8, the separated wifinetwork doesn't do the trick anymore. Students can now use every Appltv in their vicinity to project whatever image they want. This is a problem.
Can we turn off the option that enables IOS8 to connect to apple-tv without using the wifi network?
    Thanks in advance.
    Marco

Unless buffering a rental/prior purchase to watch it should not consume significant bandwidth when connected.
Power wise it uses 6W at most.
You can't power off from the remote but you can set it to sleep -
Press and hold Select for five seconds (or go to Settings > Sleep Now on Apple TV (2nd generation), or Settings > Standby on Apple TV (1st generation)

  • HT203521 In iOS8 I can't turn off shared iCloud calendar alerts. I share iCloud calendars with 3 others and am constantly getting their alarms for upcoming appointments. Settings- Notifications- Calendar- Shared Calendar Changes turns off changes only.

Have had new iPhone 6 for 2 months, using iOS 8.  I share iCloud calendars with 3 others and I am getting bombarded with their upcoming appointment alerts.  There seems no way to turn this off.  I went to Settings->Notifications->INCLUDE(Calendar)->Shared Calendar Changes and turned everything off, but this only blocks alerts about new events or changes to events being added to the calendars, it does not block the 5-minute/10-minute/etc. alarms that go off immediately in advance of the appointment.  There used to be a setting in iOS7 in "Mail, Contacts, and Calendars" way at the bottom to turn off alarms from shared calendars, but I don't see that in iOS8.  Any ideas?

Finally figured this out when I read jodiemcneill 's post about Google calendars.  Thanks!
Reposting the basic idea: to turn off event alerts from shared ICloud calendars, select the Calendar App, then click the "info" (i.e., the circled red 'i') icon next to the shared iCloud calendar to be silenced. Go down to "Notifications" and turn the slider off for "Event Alerts: (Allow events on this calendar to display alerts.)"
For good measure, you can also turn off the slider for "Show Changes" to prevent the calendar from displaying messages when shared events are added/modified/deleted, although this can be done "globally" for all shared iCloud Calendars in Settings->Notifications->Calendar->Invitations (turn off all sliders, click "none" for Alert Style).
This has been a major pain in the ... neck ... for the past 3 months.  So glad to start the new year with a suddnely-much-quieter iPhone 6.

  • I can't turn off Genius!

I just can't turn off Genius.  I have signed out of the store, I do not use Match so it is not turned on.  Turn Off Genius is grayed out.

If the phone does not show up in the device list in iTunes on your computer, you can't back it up anymore.
If your phone is set to back up to iCloud, at least your contact info and photos should have been backed up, if you selected those items to be included in the backup.
Did you try to connect in recovery mode?

  • I can't turn off full-screen, and pressing F11 doesn't work.

I can't turn off full-screen mode, and hittng F11 doesn't work. Is there another way of turning it off?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
