Can I turn off FileVault 2 during encryption?

Hi, I started to use Filevault 2 in the mistaken belief that it would prevent anyone from accessing my data while I was online.  I want to turn it off, but it is still in the process of encrypting the drive.  Further, I'm worried that there might be insufficeint free space on the drive, and that the process might stall or fail.
Can I just turn off filevault int he preferences while it is still encrypting?  Is this a safe thing to do?
TIA!

In OSX 10.8.3 (Mountian Lion), I found that I could interrupt the encryption process by opening the System Preferences Privacy & Security pane, selecting the FileVault Tab, clicking the lock to make changes and entering my password, and then selecting "Turn Off Firevault."   At this point the encryption process was about an hour into an estimated 11-hour encryption stage.
The computer immediately responded by changing the displayed progress bar from showing encryption process progress to showing decryption process progress, and counted down to zero time for the next hour.  After that, I rebooted and everything was normal, except that the setting for "Disable automatic login" was changed in the General tab of the same pane from unchecked to checked.
So, this is not a problem in my experience.  It would be helpful if Apple made it more clear that this function FileVault)  is really only useful if your computer is stolen (primarily a laptop issue) or access is attempted from the keyboard by an unauthorized user. It doesn't seem to prevent your files from being read by an invader within the main user account, for example by a virus or a Trojan.

  • Can't turn off FileVault

I want to turn off FileVault, but the machine just present me with an "error" and tells me that it will be turned on again. This is after i have type my password.
    Can you help ?

    Hi Franne500;
How much free space do you have on your system disk?
In order to turn off file vault it is necessary for the system to decrypt everything. To do that it will need like 50 % of the drive free. If you don't have that it may not be able to decrypt your files for you.

  • I can't turn off filevault

I would like to turn off the filevault, and when I try to do that there is window telling me that there is not enough space in my HD to do that.
require an additional 9.3 gb on the volumuen.
Well, I have pleanty of space in the HD.
    Any help please.

the size info you get for the filevaulted home directory when logged into it is for some reason always reported incorrectly. notice that your home directory used space is being reported as 769GB which is bigger than the total size of your hard drive. that's of course can't be. to get the true size of your filevaulted sparse bundle run this in terminal
    du -cxhd 1 /Users/.$USER
what is the size of the sparse bundle it gives? but it does sound like your home directory might be too big. then you need to clear up some space in it (move some stuff from the home directory to the main drive). then empty trash and log out/in. then try turning filevault off again.

  • Can't turn off music during slideshow

I have been using iPhoto for years and like it, usually.
Lately I have had trouble with the Slideshow settings (iPhoto '11, version 9.2.1, running in OS 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro).
Basically, whatever I set (time per slide, music on or off), after clicking "Play"  the slideshow defaults to 3.0 sec per slide and music set to On.
I must be missing something somewhere.

    Thanks for the reply.
Updated iPhoto; still the same problem.
Next I restarted, deleted the iPhoto plist from my hidden Library, and restarted.
Now, iPhoto won't recognize my library; although, it is willing to import all the photos (presumably without the albums, metadata etc.).
I put the plist back into the Library and restarted, and it still doesn't recognize its old familiar library.

  • Can't turn on FileVault, get message "an error occured during encryption (An error occurred during copying). FileVault won't be turned on for this account"

Every time I try to turn on FileVault I get a message "an error occured during encryption (An error occurred during copying). FileVault won't be turned on for this account".
The file is only 96GB and I have 800GB free space

I had this issue with my Mac Pro. I needed to turn off Filevault because it was causing performance issues with my Adobe video editing software. I got the same message you did. It took some time, but I finally figured out how to solve the problem!! If you look in the console (Finder/Go/Utilities/Console) and go to the system log, you will be able to pinpoint what happened when the filevault failed to turn off. In my case, it was a few Firefox profile cahe files that were an issue (so I copied the profile folder to another disk, trashed the folder on my system drive, then emptied the trash). Then I tried again, and this time it was because of a few photos that were "locked". I unlocked the offending images and then tried once again and SUCCESS! I then replaced the Firefox profile folder to it's original location and everything is working like a charm. But most definately if people have "locked" folders or photos, Filevault will not be able to copy them and delete the encrypted version. I wish I had found a thread like this when I was going through my Filevault nightmare! Would have saved me a lot of trouble, worry and aggravation.
If you really need to keep files encrypted or protected, simply create an encrypted disk image and keep only the files you want to protect in that image. It's extremely easy to do if you have Carbon Copy Cloner (An amazing and highly recommended  FREE system backup and hard drive cloning app. It will create a backup of whatever files or folders you chose and create a 128bit or 256bit password protected encrypted disk image that you can very easily access at any time.
    Hope this helps!!!!! Good luck!

  • How can I turn off the FileVault?

How can I turn off the FileVault? It keeps saying 'Encryption paused', even I connected the power adapter.
What impacts does it have on my Macbook Pro if I cannot turn off the FileVault?
    Thank you!

If you don't already have a current backup of all data, back up before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
Then, from the menu bar, select
              File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
    Enter the password again.
You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.
If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select
              Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    from the Format menu.
You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.
Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

  • Advice Article TS1974 to create HD space to turn off FileVault doesn't work

I would like to turn off FileVault (prior to fitting larger internal HD in my G4 PwrBk).
I have carefully followed instructions in the above article which falters at step 19, because the new Sparse Disk Image of my Home folder, created on an external HD, is 23GB in size and there is only 9Gb left on my resident laptop HD. This is precisely the problem the above procedure is supposed to get around!
So I can't copy the newly created sparse disk image back to my new user-account which is supposed to replace my FV protected original user account! I must be doing something stupid as the whole point of Apple's guide is to get around insufficient space on the HD in the first place!
As an aside I've discovered a couple of errors/omissions in the above article. I'd be pleased to list them for our moderator if considered helpful for others.
Please can anyone help me understand:
    1. How is above process supposed to save space and
    2. How can I copy my new Home Directory back to a nearly full HD without first deleting the original account?
Apple's article seems weak on this aspect.
Many thanks to all techies who can help.

I'm not sure about the instructions in [Apple support article TS1974|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1974?viewlocale=en_US] , but here are some thoughts.
    That support article includes
When turning FireVault on or off in Security preferences in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, this alert may appear:
"There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on (or off) FileVault"
The amount of free space stated as needed may be much greater than what is available ("4000 GB of free space is needed" may appear, for example).
There can't really be "4000 GB" of free space needed, and so if you see that message it may instead indicate some system error. If that is the case then there might actually BE enough free space on the HD, and it may be that situation that the support article is trying to remedy. The method given, which doesn't delete the old FV data before importing the new data, doesn't otherwise make sense, as you say.
In your case, where there really isn't enough free space, I also would instead try cloning to a bigger drive. The idea would be to clone your entire internal HD to a larger external volume, boot from it, turn off FileVault from there, and then test everything thoroughly. If all functions well on the external volume with Filevault off, then you would clone it back to the internal HD. This has the advantage of not deleting anything on your internal HD until you are sure that the clone works properly.
One important caveat - you can use software such as Carbon Copy Cloner to clone to the external drive initially, but *do not make the clone while logged into the FileVault account*. Instead create a second (non-Filevault) admin account, and run CCC from there. From CCC help:
    Working with FileVault home directories
FileVault protects the contents of your home directory by enclosing it in an encrypted disk image. When you log in, the encrypted disk image is unlocked via your login and password and mounted for use as your home directory. Mounted disk images pose an interesting problem to incremental backup utilities. By simply being mounted and accessed (e.g. via browsing the contents), the content of a disk image, and thus the disk image file itself, is modified. If you run CCC while logged in to a FileVault-protected account, there is a strong chance that the FileVault disk image will be modified while it is being backed up, resulting in a corrupted version of the disk image on your backup volume. Also, because the contents of your FileVault-protected home directory are technically on another volume, CCC will not back up the contents of your home directory when backing up your root filesystem (e.g. your boot drive).
For these reasons, you should either exclude your FileVault disk image file from your backup routine while logged into a FileVault-protected account (and set up a separate routine for backing up the contents of your home directory), or you should only run CCC while logged into an account that is not protected by FileVault.

  • Turn off FileVault when upgrading?

I'm going to upgrade from 10.3.9 to the current system software. Must I first turn off FileVault protection before I start the install? I've looked for documentation but haven't been successful in finding it.
    Thanks,

    pammm56,
Perhaps this will help answer your question.
Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4: Transferring data with Setup Assistant / Migration Assistant FAQ:
I'm trying to transfer a FileVault-protected account with Setup Assistant, but it says "File Vault users cannot be transferred to Macs with existing users".
FileVault protects home directories by storing them in an encrypted disk image file. This image file can be migrated from an older Mac to a newer one as long as the newer computer has not yet been migrated to (and has no existing user accounts).
To migrate the account's home directory and account settings at a later time, start up your older Mac and turn off the account's FileVault protection. Then use Setup Assistant to transfer the desired account or data. You can protect the account with FileVault again on your new computer.Based on that answer, I would be inclined to turn it off even though you are just upgrading.

  • Unable to turn off FileVault in Mavericks

When opening "Security and Privacy" in Settings, a window pops up stating:  "There was a problem enabling FileVault.  Problems were encountered with the disk "Macintosh HD".  Please turn off FIleVault, verify and (if necessary) repair the disk with DIsk Utility, and try enabling FileVault again".
Clicking "Turn off FileVault" brings up a dialog box "Are you sure you want to turn off FileVault?"  Clicking "Turn Off Encryption" generates this error message:  "Disabling FileVault Failed.  An error occurred while reverting the disk.  (Error:  -69755)" and immediately afterward the same exact error message as noted at the top.
Running DIsk Utility, verified both the physical drive and the partition, both the disk and the folder permissions.  FileVault problem persists.  Logging out and rebooting does not clear the problem.

I had the same or a very similar problem.  I have a mid-2011 MBA that I upgraded to Mavericks, and then enabled FileVault -- no problems.  I then bought a virtually identical used mid-2011 MBA for my wife to use, upgraded it to Mavericks, and attempted to enable FileVault.  FileVault would go through the motions of encrypting the whole hard drive (256 GB SSD), and then give the error message quoted by the OP above.  When I tried to turn FileVault back off, that would not work either.
I tried re-installing Mavericks several times, erasing the hard drive completely and doing a clean re-install from an external drive, but each time when I attempted to enable FileVault, I would receive the same error message.  I called up Apple Support on the phone, and they suggested re-installing Mavericks from the Recovery Partition (not the external drive), but that did not work either.  They then suggested I go to the Apple Store Genius Bar to have hardware tests run on my hard drive.
I went to the Genius Bar, and they tested the hard drive, which passed all their tests.  As one last thing to try before sending the MBA off to get the hard drive replaced, my genius (Brittney Atilano at the One Stockton Street store) asked if when I had erased the drive if I had ever changed the partitioning.  I said no, it still had the original one GUID partition that came with the MBA when I bought it, and I had never messed with the partitioning.  Brittney said that in their Apple training, they were taught to change the partitioning to something else, and then change it back to one GUID partition, to ensure complete re-formating of the hard drive.  So she changed it to two partitions in a different format, re-formatted the hard drive, then changed it back to one GUID partition, re-formated the hard drive again, and then repeated that procedure once more for good measure, ending up with one GUID partition.  We then re-installed Mavericks on the newly-formated hard drive, enabled FileVault, and lo and behold it worked this time, no problems.
I really wanted to be able to use FileVault on this MBA, so I am very happy that Brittney was able to solve my problem.  I hope this technique will help others out there . . . good luck!

  • I can't turn off Accessibility Grayscale

When I pulled my iPhone 5 out of my pocket yesterday evening and tapped the Home button, it came on with everything in black-and-white. Apps open in grayscale and so do album covers, photos and pages in Safari.
I've toggled Accessibility Grayscale on and off for 3 complete cycles and nothing changed.
I upgraded from iOS 8.0.0 to 8.0.2 and nothing changed.
I've toggled Accessibility Grayscale on and off for 3 complete cycles again and nothing changed.
I've powered down and back up and nothing changed.
I've noticed brief flashes of color when I'm on a web page with lots on tiny flag icons as I rotate the screen from vertical to horizontal and vice-versa. Once it gets to the new screen orientation, the color reverts to grayscale.
Any ideas what's wrong and how to fix?

Tried restarting the phone and holding the Home button at the same time several times last month and nothing changed. I was about to give up.
Then Wednesday at work I walked to the restroom, and when I got back to my desk, I saw on my PC I had pocket Tweeted gibberish during the walk. I took the phone out, turned it on and canceled out of a couple other things it had tried to do in my pocket. When the home screen was left, all the icons were back in color. It had very definitely been still in grayscale earlier when I had been reading my Twitter feed at the chiropractor's office before work. It stayed in color the rest of the night. The only thing unusual was the battery was down to 20% and red for no reason when I plugged it in to charge while I was asleep.
But wait, it gets better ...
When I woke up Thursday and checked my notifications, there was a large square white box outline with rounded corners I'd never seen before. It went from side to side, but the height was the same as the width, so it did not fill the vertical screen. At bottom center of the white box was a button the shape of a capsule. Touching it opened a menu of about 5 option, the first 2 of which were Zoom In and Zoom Out, and the bottom option toggled between Show Controller and Hide Controller.
So I swiped to unlock the phone and something very interesting happened when the home screen appeared. The white box outline was still there and the icons outside it were still in color, but all the icons inside the white box were grayscale. When I dragged the box to the bottom of the screen, the icons at the top became color and the icons at the bottom became grayscale.
So I recalled the suggestion to turn off Accessibility Zoom, which it would not let me do earlier, so I tried that again. I held it in the Off position for more than a minute and when I let go, it looked like it finally stayed off, so I restarted the phone. When it came back up, the white box outline was gone, everything was in grayscale, I couldn't turn off Zoom and I'm right back where I started.
This recent episode reminded me that before it got stuck in grayscale, I had for a couple of weeks been having trouble with the phone pocket Zooming for no apparent reason. For several weeks before grayscale started, I would take the phone out of my pocket and at least once a day would have to double tap it with 3 fingers to get it to zoom out before I could even see the place to swipe to unlock it.
So maybe the subject line of this thread should be: I can't turn off Zoom, and that has me stuck in Grayscale.

  • How do I turn off FileVault?

I would like to turn off FileVault, but cannot find it on my computer even with Spotlight. Where is it and how can I turn it off?

    Bob,
This has nothing to do with File Vault but I noticed in your System Preferences you have Norton installed. I would STRONGLY recommend you uninstall it by following Norton's uninstall instructions.
Not only is it unnecessary because there are no viruses for OS X it tends to create problems for many users. In short it creates more problems that it solves. While there is a very small amount of malware for OS X there are no viruses, your system will run better without Norton and you can keep it extremely safe by running Software Update regularly.
