Can I turn off my iMessage so everything will come through as SMS??

My husband and I both have an iPhone 4. We have unlimited text, a limited amount of data and do not have wifi. So I figured if I turned off my iMessage I could conserve on my data, but then I don't receive any my husband (and possibly others') texts. This doesn't seem right to me. I figured everything will just come through as an SMS and not use my data.
If anyone has suggestions or of knowledge of how this should work or what I can do I would appreciate it!!

I'm completely fine with data usage if I choose to send pics.
But if I have my iMessage off I can send a text my husband and he will receive it, but I do not get the texts he sends to me.

How can I turn off "reply" button when the messages come? I prefer the "open" button. Because my friends usually send lots of messages at the same time so I cannot read all of them when I press "reply", then I have to go to Messages -> my friends' messages, and it's really complicated.

Sorry for not quite understanding. I guess you are referring to a notice in an alert. I do not have that alert active on my device, so I cannot say. I use the banner alert, so I just get a notice of a message and can swipe to open that particular message. If I ignore it, it will eventually go away.

Are you refering to the messages that appear when accessing secured sites? In that case the following Apple document may explain a bit more (and I believe you cannot turn off that behaviour) :

  • Can I turn off the iMessage typing indicator bubble with the three dots off?

I currently use software on iOS 6 that disables my outgoing bubble with the three dots that lets whoever I'm communicating with know that I'm typing. I want to update to iOS 7, but can't find any information about whether the option to disable the indicator is present in the new settings. Thanks in advance to anyone who can't point me in the right direction.

You only see them if someone is iMessaging you. You won't see them for SMS. They've been there since iMessages was released.

How can I turn off my imessage online?

Not sure what you mean by turning it off 'online'? The only way to deactive iMessage is to go to Settings > Messages > and turn off iMessage there. If you have multiple iOS devices that are linked to your Apple ID that you use to send iMessages from (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Mac), you'll have to individually turn off iMessage on each device, otherwise when someone sends you a message from another iMessage capable device, it'll just go to one of the other devices.

  • Can't turn off shuffle for iTunes 11.1.5

Since iTunes upgraded, to 11.1.5, the I can't turn off shuffle.  But, it only shuffles through some of my songs and artists so I hear them A LOT and other artists I don't hear at all.  It's VERY annoying.  The settings show that shuffle is off, but it still shuffles (still among a limited list).  This appears to be a bug.

By Plays...  That's interesting.  I don't think I've listened to songs in that order before.  Good idea.  I just tried it on my Mac (latest version of Mavericks and iTunes), and it seems to work as expected, for the play order.
There is a recent new feature called Up Next. It is a song list that you can see by clicking on a symbol that looks like three lines with a dot to the left of each line; it is at the right side of the box that shows the song's info at the top of the iTunes window. It's a song list that you can add to, like a temp playlist, with songs you want to hear "next" in order (by dragging songs to the Up Next symbol).  If you are just playing from a list, like your library list or playlist, the Up Next list should just show songs on the song list in order.
Does it show the expected song list order, or the oddly shuffled order?  If it's the oddly shuffled list, click the button to Clear the list (at the top of the list).  Then, restart playing from your song list by double clicking on a song.  Does that make any difference for this problem?

Have your husband text the word "stop" to 48369. This should take his number out of the iMessage system.
Go into your settings under messaging and make sure the box to send as an SMS if iMessage is unavailable is checked.
Hopefully this will get your messages sending/receiving to each other.

My elderly mother has EXTREMELY limited vision and is a technophobe. I am considering an iPhone with Siri.  Can I turn off everything else so she can use only the phone app and voice dialing or Siri and not accidentally open any other app and screw something up.

I'm asking, in all seriousness, why do you think your mother needs an iPhone? Honestly, if your mother is, as you described her, a technophobe, I would recommend against getting an iPhone or any other smartphone. I've spent a fair bit of time teaching older folks to use smartphones. If they are interested in learning, it's fine. If they have the phone because their kids or grandkids thought it was a good idea but they are afraid of the phone or not interested in its features, it doesn't go well at all.
Many basic phones have voice dialing. Obviously, it doesn't do all the things Siri does but it may be much less intimidating for your mom. Also, basic phones have hardware keys. Even someone with limited vision can learn the keyboard on such a phone. From the sound of your first post, all she will be doing is making phone calls.
    Best of luck.

  • TS5185 i have turned off my Imessage but I still can't receive text from anyone using an Iphone

I switched from iPhone 4s to a galaxy note 2 but I can't receive messages from other iPhone users. . I turned off my Imessage but I still can't receive any

    Hi there.
Had exactly the same issue, and i've sorted this out now. It IS Apple's responsibility to deactivate this function, and simply switching their imessage off on a handset will NOT work.
Whatever apple did, they effectively released my number (read: t-mobile's number) from their messaging / OS framework's grip.
    Please read my explanation here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24488400#24488400
You will need to contact apple support according to my solution.
Whatever it was they did, and i can guarantee that they did SOMETHING to release my (t-mobile's) number from their ecosystem, even though they did not specify step two (whatever they did after instructing me to deactivate imessage on their handset - which i explained i had already done), it has now returned my SMS delivery and receipt status to normal, and i can send and receive to everyone and anyone in my Contact List.
