Can I turn off syncing?

I don't want my things to sync. I like having "backups" in different versions.  I doubt I'll want to sync anything even after I move to Lion. I don't like iCloud's ideas and I don't want to have to move away from the Mac platform but if I can't make it do what I want....  Why would anyone want to sync everything anyway?  If I want a copy somewhere I'd prefer to move it there manually like I did with iDisk (even if that means going thru iCloud) but I want to choose exactly what I move, where I move it & when I move it.  I want my iDisk back (and iCards, and .mac addresses but I know that's just wishful iThinking).

Thanks for your assistance. I can tell you have done a lot with this new app.  The folder concept does sound a lot like my old beloved iDisk.
Your tip referred to "syncing" and while I would want to access an item, I don't necessarily want it residing on my computer nor do I want it to "sync". I just want to access from wherever I wish and keep it there (in the cloud, so to speak) safely. I'm not sure if my idea of "sync" is the same as yours.  When I say sync, I mean at least one of the items changes its contents to copy what the other has.
I've read that iCloud deletes thngs after a time, though. I would hope since they are offering different "storage" levels for purchase that negates their deleting it, but I don't see aything to reassure me that is the case.
As soon as I can get my Mac backed up, freed up (deleting stuff to make more HD space) and restored ('cos I thinks it's about to fail), I'll upgrade the OS.  I hope to do this during Christmas vacation....  Anyway, thanks again.

  • Once I have synced my Google calendar to iCal, can I turn off syncing and save all info in iCal?

I have been using Google Calendar, and syncing info from it to my Mac, iPad and iPhone. Now that all the info I originally entered into Google Calendar is on my Apple devices, can I turn off syncing it and save all the events, birthdays, etc. that were put into iCal up to this point? I have only been adding to my iCal via the Mac, iPad or iPhone for several months now, so it seems silly to keep using Google Calendar.

Unless you have backed up your iCal data, there is no way to retrieve the now missing data. To easily back up your calendar data, simply choose the Back up Database… option under the File menu in iCal.
Microsoft cautions users that deletion of the Entourage calendar in iCal—without first disabling the synchronization function with Entourage—will result in exactly the outcome you see.
If you have not subsequently synchronized with .Mac since you deleted the iCal calendar, you can selectively restore calendar files as a collection of calendars from .Mac by using the Reset Sync Data… option in the .Mac preference pane by launching System Preferences, pressing the .Mac icon then the Advanced tab, and waiting for your client list to update. Once you've done that, press the Reset Sync Data… button, choose Calendars from the drop down menu and pick the option to replace the data on your Macintosh with data stored on the .Mac servers.

  • Can i turn off sync for some files?

In dropbox and box you can decide which files to sync to the desktop.  I have limited space on my computer to sync all the files that I want to keep in the cloud portion.

    Hi there,
We recently enabled a part of this capability by enabling users to turn off syncing of selected shared folders from Creative Cloud and I've added some instructions on how to do this here:
How to: Choose which Creative Cloud shared folders you sync
We do not currently offer the ability to selectively sync your own files and folders unless they are shared folders but it's useful to hear that you would like this feature and we are working on how we might enable it.
    I hope that helps.

  • Can I turn off syncing in iTunes?

Whenever I open iTunes, it gets slowed down by the AppleTV sync, even if there is nothing new to sync. Is there a way I can turn syncing off in iTunes, without deleting the content on the AppleTV? Thanks.

you have a problem with itunes or your system in general then, as i can continue to use itunes fully even whilst appletv is syncing with it.

  • Turning off sync without loosing music

After a year of managing my own music transfers I made the mistake of using iTunes sync to give my iPod a fresh reload to make sure all my edits to the library were up to date. Now I can’t turn off sync without iTunes threatening to erase everything on the iPod. As a temporary patch I’ve got iTunes set to only sync checked items but it’s really lame to have to trick iTunes into leaving my iPod alone. Anyone know how to turn the feature off without wiping the iPod?

#@!&%$# ... using my "sync on checked" trick wiped everything without warning. I guess I got my wish and I can go back to manually managing the iPod. I HATE iTUNES! It's deliberately crippled in so many ways ...

  • I've just bought an iPhone 5S in the UK, seems like a big mistake. I have turned off sync to icloud from the phone for both my contacts and calendar, as told on itunes. However, iTunes still says they are synced from iCloud and wont sync to PC, Fix ?

I've just bought an iPhone 5S in the UK, seems like a big mistake, but luckily by law we can return goods, which is exactly what is going to happen if I cant get this to work. This is my business phone, not having it functional can cost me money.
I have turned off sync to icloud from the phone for both my contacts and calendar, as told on itunes. However, iTunes still says they are synced from iCloud and wont sync to my PC, why and how do I fix it so that it doesnt go to iCloud for anything ?
The phone currently has no contacts or calendar information installed.
PC is HP Probook 4730s running Windows 7, Professional, version 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601.

I'm happy you figured it out and just try to keep in mind that not everyone you talk to at support will give the same advice or have the same knowledge. Just like those who contribute to these forums. Sometimes Google is your best friend.
I agree that Apple could probably make it easier, but as of yet prefer security over freedom. (sound famaliar?)

  • I know you can't "turn off" tv but its getting hot in standby..

    Hi
I know you can't "turn off" tv but its getting hot in standby, I havent used it all day, and the top is still really warm. I know this is the heat sink, but why is it getting so hot when in standby and doing nothing, for many hours?
To turn off I realise will have to switch off at mains. Is this recommended? when should I do it? when not syncing and in standby?
I'm a little worried by how hot it is, when never used for about 48 hours and in standby
    cheers

........ leaving it on 24/7 doesnt cost that mch though does it?
All depends on how much your electricity costs, at 10 p/c per kilowatt/hour, your tv using around 18 W in stand-by will cost you about 30 1/4 p/c a week.
If cost is a factor for you then consider switching it off overnight, don't however worry too much about the heat. It may appear to run hot because of its unusual heat dissipation, however if you were to place your hand on the heat sync surrounding your cpu on your mac/pc, you'd likely realise comparatively the tv isn't excessively warm. (The CPU's in my mac are currently running at 44-56 C for example)
I don't particularly see much wrong in turning the unit off from time to time, (although I'm not sure I like the idea of not knowing if the HDD is writing at the time) assuming it isn't excessive. Excessive switching is not good for most devices since strain on mechanical parts and stress caused to electrical components due to large temperature variations can lead to early failure.

  • Can I turn off automatic download of Itunes Extras

This has been asked before by someone else but they recieved no answers so I'll try again.
Can I turn off automatic download of Itunes Extras.  I never use them and have to delete them and they hold up downloads of what I want?
    Thanks

Thanks Michael. I had no idea that that menu was even there, and it seems odd that it's not accessible frome the regular menu bar (or is it??). But indeed, I do see it now and this may help. The reason I said this approach is still less than ideal is that it will require me to remember all of the accidental unflaggings between syncs to my computer, and then manually reflag everything.... and if I want to be sure to do it right I'll have to take notes etc, which is quite a burden just to get around something that used to work effortlessly and automatically until Apple "improved" it... But thanks!

  • How can I turn off the LED light? It's constantly on.

If anyone can give me some help, that would be tremendous. How can I turn off the LED light as it's contstantly turned on???

If a reset does not work, then the next steps in user troubleshooting are restore from a backup and if that doesn't work, then restore as a new device. If that doesn't work, then you can make an appointment to take the device to the Apple store and have the hardware checked.
If you live close to an Apple store, you could go there first, but they will probably ask if you have done a restore and would do one there, so make sure you have backed up and synced all of your data.

  • HT201150 How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?

How can I turn off this "feature" and have the power button bring me the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by default again?
With the position of the power button on the Retina MacBooks, any mistake turns off the screen in the middle of a presentation or any activity using a projector or big screen — a huge waste of time to wake up the display, enter password, have the projector sync back, watch audience disconnecting from what was being discussed, etc.
This is very annoying, and seems to add to the increasing collection of options Apple decided to make by itself instead of allowing the user to choose.
Come on Apple guys, I'm using my Mac because I want options and lots of preferences to tweak to my needs.
If I needed the lobotomized version I'd be using my iPad!
Any way (official or hack) to change this button back to its proper funcionality?
    Thanks!

Not what you want, but you can get the shut down / restart / sleep dialog by holding the power button

  • Turning off sync... deletes everything?????  Huh?

I don't really need to re-sync my iPhone apps over and over again.
    (Since I haven't changed anything.)
But when I try to turn off syncing (unchecking the 'sync apps' box)... iTunes 7.7.1.11 warns me that I'm about to DELETE ALL my apps from my PHONE.
Huh? I don't want to delete anything, anywhere.
Why can't I simply 'don't sync anymore'... and just leave everything else
    exactly as it is???
Wow. Can't I control what I delete/keep, instead of "we will destroy everything for you, whether you want to, or not"?
    Who designs software like that????

    New-Apple-Guy wrote:
Why are you plugging-in your iPhone if you don't want to sync it?
I only wanted to turn off syncing for "apps"... but still sync other groups.
Either way... isn't "turn off app sync" very different from "I want to destroy everything"????
Well, when you uncheck "sync applications" on the app tab, it assumes that you don't want the apps on your device and deletes them. Note that if you keep it checked, it will only sync apps that CHANGED since the last update - meaning it will do nothing if no apps have changed. What's wrong with this default behavior? - it seems to make sense to me. What am I missing?
You can also choose to manually sync everything for the first tab's checkbox.

  • Can't turn off voiceover

I have an iPod Nano 5th generation and I can't turn off the voiceover function. I don't want to hear it.
I've gone to the options panel and deselected the "enable voiceover" box. But on my ipod it's still on. I've tried many, many times and did just as the manual said.
Can anyone help? Does this have to do with any sync settings or something?

    Hello blingdogg,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Connect your iPod to your PC and when it appears in iTunes, remove the tick mark next to *Enable VoiceOver* as well and then sync the updated changes to your iPod. Any luck there?

  • Turning off sync for an audiobook

In the new version of iTunes, how do I tell software not to sync a particular audiobook to my iphone after I have finished listening to it? I think I see how to turn the sync on, but not how to turn it off.

Oh, I see. It's pretty much the same as before. I clicked on the audiobooks button while I was logged onto iTunes, which lets you see what's in your library, but can't turn off the sync. I forgot you have to click the iphone button first, then go to your audiobook library. It's easy if you do the rigth way.
    Thanks!

  • How can i turn off the iCloud account.

How can I turn off my ICloud account?

Go to Settings>iCloud and tap Delete Account and provide the password when prompted.
If you want to keep photo stream photos, save them to your camera roll before deleting the account.  If you want to save synced notes, open them and email them to yourself.  You will be given an option to either keep or delete the rest of your iCloud data from your device when you delete the account.
