Can I un-install IE after installing Firefox?

I run Windows XP with IE 8.0. I got Firefox, and it worked better than IE right from the start. After a few months the Windows slowed to a crawl or locked up, using 100% of CPU and over 1 gb of memory. I got a second gb of memory, and the locking up stopped, but performance is still poor. When I start Firefox and start Task Manager a bunch of Internet Explorer tasks start up using tons of memory and CPU resources. Can I un-install IE and use just Firefox?

As FredMcD says, IE is tied into Windows. It is a good idea to have a second browser, anyway, in case something goes wrong with your Firefox.
A bit of housekeeping will help. Your System Details shown above show related plug-ins -
TotalRecipeSearch and My Web Search
You would be better off without both of these. Google for information and removal advice.
Your Shockwave Flash is also well out of date.

  • How can I re-install firefox without losing my data. It is Infested with ADS BY bame.

Firefox is infested with "Ads by name".
How can I get rid of it or how can I
Re-Install firefox without losing any data?

    Couple other suggestions:
Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Add/Remove Programs. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help surface innocent sounding bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
Also, could you check whether Firefox has a non-standard '''connection setting'''? You can do that here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
The default "Use system proxy settings" should piggyback on your Windows/IE "LAN" settings. But you can try "No proxy" to see whether that makes any difference.
Finally, our support article [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] lists '''cleaning tools''' other Firefox users have found useful. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
    Success?

  • I can't uninstall/install FireFox due to a pop-up that says: Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox..."

This problem arose when I attempted to upgrade my existing FireFox browser to the new FireFox 7. I clicked through the auto-update, but didn't think that anything changed, as the browser didn't look like the image in the feature explanation image I was viewing. I then tried to download Firefox 7, and when I tried to instal it, this process began.
I can't uninstall/install FireFox due to a pop-up that says: Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox..." When restarted and attempted again, the same pop up appears and I am stuck in an infinite loop.
I cannot locate the Mozilla file within my program files to try and delete cantankerous upgrade components, which seems to resolve this issue for many people. See: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/796566
I also tried completely deleting Firefox, which didn't work either-- I ended up doing a system restore, only to be met with the same infinite loop.
Now, when I click on the Mozilla icon, nothing happens. No window opens, no error message, nothing.
Why can't I find the Mozilla folder in my Programs File but can see it in Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs" (though I can't uninstal due to infinite loop)?

It is probably because you are not properly closing Firefox. Restarting your system would make sure that Firefox had terminated, but you do not have to do that.
To properly close Firefox on Windows systems, use
:File > Exit or "Firefox:" button > Exit
When you get the message "Firefox is already running" it is too late, and you must force termination of Firefox through the Windows Task Manager before restarting Firefox. Windows 7 has a keyboard shortcut to save you a step "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" then on "Processes" tab, select "firefox.exe" and use the "End Process" button. More thorough would be to right-click on the "firefox.exec" and choose "End Process Tree".
You would find firefox.exe in a Mozilla folder in your program files, but y0u would not want to delete it there, you would need to use the Control Panel which you have already identified and do it from there -- but generally you would not need to do that, and there is nothing in what you have posted to indicate that you should. But if you did do that, then don't let the install start Firefox for you as you would want to use you existing desktop icon or method of starting Firefox, and should decline having Firefox install start Firefox for you. When the install starts then invoke Firefox in your normal manner. This should eliminate problems of creating a new profile rather than using your old profile.

  • Why can't I install Firefox?

Firefox would open, but instantly freeze, so I couldn't even reset it. The only way to close it was through the task manager. I decided the only thing I could do was uninstall and reinstall, so I did that. It downloaded but the set up wizard never started. I can't even find it listed in my downloads. I am having to use IE to send this message. Please help!

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, #p#ly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

You can use one of these to start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u>:

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 21.0: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you will lose all personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.
If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

  • Why can't i install firefox on windows 7

When I try to install Firefox on my windows 7 desktop platform (running this as an administrator), I can download the install file "Firefox Setup 4.0.1.exe", but when I run the file (also as administrator), I get an 'Extration Failed' pop-up stating that it cannot open an output file.

Will it work if you right click the downloaded exe and choose run as administrator?

  • Why can't I install Firefox as an unprivileged user?

I can't install Firefox without letting it alter my system. I can install all other browsers as an unprivileged user, but not Firefox.

Did you try your solution? As soon as I cancel UAC prompt, installation aborts. I can't start installation without it showing UAC prompt. Thus I can't choose path to install browser. You know, all other browsers allow to choose installation type between "All users" and "Current user". While "All users" type requires admin rights and UAC prompt appears if user chooses it, "Current user" does not require admin rights, so no UAC prompt appears if user chooses this type. With Firefox I am not given the choice. It requires admin rights as soon as installation is launched. It even ignores set __COMPAT_LAYER=RunAsInvoker environment variable.

  • Why can't I install firefox in the language of MY chosing?

I get sometimes very tired of preassumptions on websites that are hard to change.
The Firefox download takes that to the extremes. Why can't I just install and UK version and get all the time prompted to download the NL version. I am working internationally and want all my programs to be English, so this presumption is more than just frustrating, it is wasting time and injecting lots of negative energy!

  • How can i i install firefox on a computer i can't download it directly to

I need to make a copy of firefox to install on a computer that can't download from internet because IE is not installed how do i do this

    Hey scopeland,
I'd say your best bet would be to download the Firefox installer and put it on a flash stick. Then you can plug it into the computer that doesn't have IE and install Firefox that way.
    Hope this helps!

When I try to install Firefox for Android on my Motorola Defy Mini (XT320), Google Play Store tells me that my device is not compatible with Firefox for Android,so I cannot install it; according to Antutu Benchmark system info, the Motorola Defy Mini has an Arm v7 CPU installed, so it should be compatible with Firefox for Android...

Turns out it was a permissions issue, the files created by the certutil in the defaults folder got root only permissions given to them. I opened them up and it's working fine.

  • Why can I not install Firefox anymore using -ms?

I use to be able to install the downloaded versions of Mozilla Firefox using a simple switch on the command line. The switch was -ms. It worked great through, I think, version 24.0. No versions after that have worked. Is there a reason? It there an "easy" workaround? I've seen stuff that tells you create a config file and add it to the install. Surely there is an easier way? Anybody know something that will work? Appreciate any help with this.

Thank you so much!! This is exactly what I needed and is working.
Appreciate you taking the time to respond. :o)

  • If I already have the Tor browser installed, can I also install firefox and run it independent of Tor sometimes?

I like the fact that Tor is anonymous, but I don't always need the anonymity when I surf the net. Just want to know if I install FF as well if they will open and run independent of each other. Kind of like running Chrome and IE at the same time.

As they are separate programs, there should be no problem.
But watch for any issues. There are many times I run Firefox

  • How can I re-install firefox 4? firefox 5 doesn't run a key plug in I need for my job. This is major issue. Please help.

I need to reinstall firefox 4 - where can I go to do that? Why does your site make this difficult to do?

    Hi ancusm,
Unfortunately, downloading Firefox 4 is not recommended, because the update to Firefox 5 was a security-related fix. However, you can go back to Firefox 3.6.18, just download it from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
