Can i un install Mail?

my MAIL has stopped letting me recieve mail, my password hasnt altered, can i uninstall mail, and then reinstall or down load the app and start fresh?

At the expense of setting up your email account again in that account, you could delete the Mail preferences file.
When it is recreated, your Mail should then remember your password and create a keychain entry for that purpose.
Note, you will need to know your Mail username, password, isp or Mail server etc.
You can get these details from your other account that works, from accessing Mail Preferences > Accounts and clicking through those settings and write them down.
Log out and and return to your troublesome account and in Finder locate and trash the file.
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Now open Mail and recreate your account using the information you wrote down before. If it asks to remember your password you would affirm, yes.
This effectively renews your Mail account.

  • Can't Re-install Mail

I am running Leopard 10.5.8 on my iMac and I am trying to re-install mail from my master DVD (10.5.4), but when I try to open it I get a message saying 'This version of mail will not run on this computer'. How can I solve this?
    Thank You.

You need to reinstall 10.5.8 but you need to use the Combo Updater in order to update the version you reinstalled to the current version. Download the Combo Updater at support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Can I re-install Mail (OS 10.5.2)

I'm having trouble with Mail 3.2 and would like to re-install it. Can this be done? I can't find Mail anywhere to download and can't find it on my Leopard install disk.
I have a million (not really) mailboxes and messages and I don't want to lose them or have to set them up again, so my re-installation is dependent upon being able to keep what I have.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the info about where to find the mail app.
The trouble I was (was!) having started on Sunday when I think I accidentally clicked on the synchronize option and I couldn't interrupt it. The app kept trying to sync and wouldn't let me do anything. I opened the activity panel and stopped everything but then I'd get a screen that would tell me that all the operations couldn't be completed while offline (I was not offline) and they would be reset so they could be redone. No option to NOT reset and redo, so I was stuck in an infinite loop, or so it seemed. I let it run forever and it got nowhere except once in a while it would give me the same "offline" message.
I fixed it by logging on as another user, going in to the mail app, doing some setup stuff and let it sync by itself (loaded all my mailboxes and mail, etc.) and verifying that I had everything except my "rules." I synced the rules from the admin mail app to .mac and then to my new mail app. I did all of this just to make sure I could recover all my mailboxes, mail, and everything else. It worked, so then I logged back in as my admin user and deleted the mail folder (actually I just renamed it!) and the pref file and started over like I did when I logged in as a new user. It didn't take too long and now I have two users configed the same. Hopefully this won't happen again.
I can't believe there's no way to stop and reset the mail app. That would have helped a lot. Since all my mail is on .mac, I really wasn't too upset nor worried about losing everything, but I use Mail all the time for work and personal and have it set up so it makes my like a bit easier. I didn't want to start all over again!

Try deleting that app, then see if you have the same issue.

  • Can't find older mail from archived install

I recently upgraded the OS on my iBook G4 to Tiger - and performed an archived install just to be safe. After installation was successful, most of my preferences transferred with the upgrade seamlessly (Calendar, Address Book items, bookmarks etc.)
But, when I opened Mail, although my mail server preferences transferred okay, I discovered that most of my earlier mail from the the last year or so is missing. And for most of the messages that are actually apearring in my inbox, Mail is saying "X Message has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." But, I am online and I can retrieve and send mail just fine.
Anyone have any idea how imight be able to recover my older mail? (I checked in the "Previous System" archived folder and sadly, there is no Library/Mail folder in there.) If worse comes to worse, I did back up all of my files on another drive before I upgraded, but I'm curious if maybe I'm just doing something wrong and my old Mail is currently buried somewhere on my laptop. Any help would be apprecaited. Thanks.

The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • After installing MountainLion I can't search for mails in Mail

Hi all, after installing Mountain Lion this february I can't search for mails in mail before 2014! But the mails are all there, I can scroll down till 2011 ;-) Its only the search who killed himselfe after upgrading from Snow Leopard.
When I search for a word via Spotlight, it finds all old emails!
    Whats wrong with my Mail.app?
    Thx

After reading A LOT of postings about this topic, I found my personal solution Because this problem started after upgrading to a new OSX, I mentioned that it must be something with rights permission. So I went on
User/Library/Mail right click -> Informations. Look down where you can see which groups has access, read/write. I went on the small wheel to change, set in my password, went on my user name, changed from "read&write" to "just read", switched back, marked "to all subfolders", then OSX asking if I really wanna do this -> yes. Waiting. Finished.
Now I see all my mails when I search inside the Mail.app.
Schnell und einfach ;-) Besten Dank

In the email you want to print, on the top right there is an arrow. Click that and an option should appear that says print. That should work. Have you already tried that?

can no longer send mail after installing Yosemite

    Hi nwpmike,
When I uncheck "SSL" it's working well, but it's not very secure. When I leave SSL, I got in "Connection Doctor" the message "Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct.", only for the SMTP. For the IMAP, the status in Green. It's also working well on the iPhone 6 with ios8 and other mac with OS X 10.9 and previous versions.
The only thing that can be involved is that the certificat used by my mail provider is expired.
With connection docteur, there is a button "Show Details". Here is the conversation when connecting to the smtp.

  • Newly installed Mail app has just gone WILD!!!

Everything was fine in Mail until I created a new accounts for my new MobileMe email address. Now I have these problems:
    1. I can no longer send mail from the .mac aliases, only from the main account. My password, even though identical to the main password, is not accepted on the aliases.
    2. I am getting two, three or more copies of every email, and not just new ones; even my emails from last year are being duplicated.
    3. When I receive email from one particular address I get a copy every second or so, without limit. This makes my computer very hot and I have to dispose of the extras quickly and then quit as soon as possible. It's a mail merged email with an embedded rota which I have generated myself from a website I help to run and has always performed perfectly well in the past. My internet connection appears to be running at normal speed, however. Today I sent one which appeared as sixteen emails before I clicked the triangle to open the folder. It then became 164! Rebuilding the mailbox has little effect. I think it may have stopped one message duplicating but it certainly didn't work today.
The scariest part of all this (apart from losing email like I'm keeping it in a colander) is that while this email is busy multiplying in my inbox, a selection of my 2008 emails is being sent to people on the list; in the middle of the duplicating file mayhem my husband 'phoned from work to complain that he was receiving my old email at the same sort of rate that I was receiving copies of the rota.
And then my daughter complained the same was happening to her. And then I found I'd had it all emailed to me as well - so now the old emails I haven't lost are sitting there, apparently unread, with incorrect dates and five or six copies of each one! I'm wondering how many of my friends have been treated to a selection of fifty or so of my old emails and what I might have written about them in 'confidence'! Not that I'm given to mouthing off about people in emails but without reading them all I wonder just what might be in them.
    4. When I try to delete the second, third and fourth copies of other emails I will suddenly find that other unselected emails, usually from just below in the list, have disappeared along with them and I have to retrieve them from the trash. The alternative is to click 'Undo' but I have to do that about three times before the missing file reappears - and then I have to try and re-delete three files without losing any others in the process. This is hopeless - it's one step forwards and three steps backwards. I also have to memorise which files are around the one I wish to delete before carrying out the action so I will know if anything else has gone.
    5. A few days ago I tried to open Mail and found that ALL my email for this year had disappeared. I found some mail from mid July to August in the bin, but all my other 2008 mail was gone. 2007 is still there. I opened it today and found that a random remnant of my 2008 email was in my inbox, but only about a twentieth of the original contents.
    6. I'm so glad I still have Entourage installed on my old computer because it's working just fine, apart from the issue I've outlined under point 1. I've retrieved all sorts of important emails from it.
This copy of Mail should be working very well. I only did a fresh system install on a new hard drive about a month ago and everything else is working fine (except a couple of finder windows that just vanished suddenly the other day).
Sorry this is long but I've tried to put several entries into one post. I originally posted this on the wrong forum - it was for MobileMe Mail, but I didn't notice the enclosing folder which was MobileMe on iPhone and iPod Touch; I am using MobileMe on my MacBook Pro. Space Herpes suggested I repost it on this forum to get more help. I had six copies of the email notification of his post so I am going ahead as this HAS to get sorted!

I've left it for a few days before responding because for some reason I hardly got any email for a couple of days and it didn't seem to be completely fixed at first as my rules took a while to kick in again and some junk appeared in my inbox. I've also been too busy to worry about it this week - daughter is starting Uni at the weekend and it's all a mad panic to set her up to move out! Apologies that I posted this on the first thread where this question went before I was prompted to move it to a more appropriate place. I didn't realise I was on the wrong board.
I have had a fair amount of messages today and I'm pleased to say I've only had one copy of everything and the subjects are back to normal - so thank you very, very much as you seem to have solved my problems. I notice that I only have the account for my [email protected] email address and I do wonder whether I need to have an account for the xxxxxx.me.com address as well? Was that possibly responsible for some of the duplicates? Are they interchangeable in Mail?
Despite the fix I do still have the corruption in my inbox, though. I've lost many, many emails and all the problems I mentioned before seem to be permanent in my 2008 mail. I have loads of duplicate copies and the subjects are all mixed up. I also have quite a few recent messages that didn't get downloaded from the server because it thought I was offline.
On my old computer I have everything as it was before. Would it be possible to copy them across somehow without losing my sent mail from this computer - or should I just be content to go to my old computer if I want to refer to anything I've lost?
