Can I undo iChat Terminal command?

Entered "com.apple.ichat newbwdup 300000" on an iBook running 10.3.9 not realizing that that was only for Panther. Now it cannot connect to the internet or open iChat. Is there anything that can be done other than reinstall?

Run the following command:
defaults delete com.apple.iChat newbwdup

  • How can I undo a terminal command?

I have altered the default location of screenshots taken on my iMac. Origionally the screenshots were sent to my desktop.
I created a folder and named it screenshots. I then opened a terminal screen which was found in the finder, under utilities. Then I copied the following into the command line "defaults write com.apple.screencapture location". Then before clicking return, I dragged the folder I named "screenshots" into the terminal window. Then I typed "killall SystemUIServer" to reset the terminal and the changes took effect.
I am curious now, how to undo these changes if I want to?

I don't believe you are using a PPC iMac, so you may want to change your profile configuration to include all the information about your hardware.
A good utility for doing these types of configurations without the need to know Terminal commands is MacPilot 4.3.1.

  • #30 | can i run the Terminal Command to stop Snapshots with no problems?

i am somewhat surprised to find out that the 75 GB of "Backups" that are taking up space on my MBP may be due to some "feature" in Mavericks or the new OS's or whatever and i have had to MOVE all my data off my laptop as a consequence of this over the last two months because i have no more space on my Hard Drive.
is it legit and OK to follow the terminal commands in #30 without having any problems?
i am on a mid 2009 MBP running Mavericks and i have a 2 TB Time Capsule that i am wirelessly backing up my data.
as some kind of sadistic test in advance of running this terminal command - can i plug my laptop into the Time Capsule, unplug the laptop from the time capsule, restart and see how much space got recaptured on my HD for my data?
i mean, well - i must be missing something but i mean i am hoping i can get this to stop so i can get my data back on my laptop. i'm walking around with an external HD of all my Mac Pro information just so i can get work done when i go to a coffee shop or something.

    In Terminal:
         sudo tmutil disablelocal
Turn off local Time Machine snapshots and trigger automatic cleanup of accumulated local snapshot data. Requires root privileges.
(use sudo tmutil enablelocal to turn back on)
this got rid of my 75 GB backup file (!!) and now i am going to move my data back to my laptop...
not sure if there is an apple tech article to link to regarding this issue but it would be good to post if there is one.

  • Trouble with curves + trackpad, can't undo

When I try to adjust the curves of a layer with a vector mask using my trackpad (clicking with my thumb, and moving the cursor with my pointer finger) something other than the curves changes. I know it is not curves because 1) it is applied whether I click apply or cancel in the curves window and 2) whatever this thing is, I can't undo it with command-Z or the history pane. It's not the blneding mode, opacity or fill that has changed. I'm assuming it has to do with some sort of gesture I don't mean to be doing. I have been able to adjust other layers with regular raster mask just fine. It seems to happen when I move the curve point up and then back down on the same click. The layers I've had this happen on are also using a lower layer as a clipping mask. This is a real problem because the only way to fix it is to revert to a saved version before this happened.

    Hello.
    I use Terminal for bash-shell.
When I work at a certain directory, can i open new terminal(command + N) with the same directory?
For example, when i am in /Developer and press command+N, I want a new terminal window with /Developer path.
Thanks for reading and I'm sorry for my short english.

Command-N will open a new Terminal window in your Home (~) Directory by default.

Help ... I've accidentally deleted all data of my user in the terminal. what to do? Can i undo the commands?
    greetings from austria

You cannot undo commands. When you delete/remove files with the rm command the files are not put in the trash where they could be recovered. They are gone.
You should have your system backed up with Time machine and/or backup clone of your system. Use them to recover you files.

  • Tried to create a SUDO password- can I undo these commands?

    Hi,
I read that if I created a SUDO password, I could use a root session to finally unlock my system preferences, which were not unlocking no mater how many times I entered my password or rebooted my computer. So I went into terminal and tried to create a password, but it wouldn't let me type one in. Long story short, I ended up with this....
Last login: Sun Mar 16 12:08:06 on console
    My-Names-MacBook-Pro:~ myappleid$ sudo passwrd root
WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss
or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your
typing when using sudo. Type "man sudo" for more information.
To proceed, enter your password, or type Ctrl-C to abort.

Can I undo any of this? Have I totally screwed up my computer, and if so, can I fix it? Also, can I eventually create a sudo password/is there another way I can unlock my systems preferences (I tried robooting several times, and also could not find the file "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.HIToolbox.plist" to delete)?
Thanks for your help! Fingers crossed!

    Hi Niel,
Thanks for your reply. I'm glad to know I didn't mess anything up. I tried what you suggested, but it isn't letting me type anything in for the password. Do you (or anyone else for that matter!) have any suggestions for how I might fix this? Thank you!

what is sudo command for? can I undo sudo commands?

If a dialog box appears that asks for your password, ask yourself whether you're doing anything that requires it, such as logging in, using sudo, moving or copying items in some system-level folders, or installing software. Mistyping a command may delete files that should remain intact, or damaging the Mac OS X installation by moving files around or altering permissions on certain components.

Is there any way that I could know that those problems are occuring>>> i'm referring to "moving files" and altering permissions on certain components?
and when you say altering permissions? what do you mean by that?
is there anyway that I can fix it? or buy a certain software for mac that would fix the system problems? like in windows there are Norton system work
I was wondering I copy and paste the said command to my terminal but it didn't work. Do you know what would happen to my system if I messed up with that command? >>>im referring to this command http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307354

  • I get "App Store Disabled" on my MacBook Pro due to profile issues. What Terminal command can I use to reset profile settings?

After transferring documents from one MacBook Pro to another I get some weird errors due to settings that seem to have transferred over. One is that the Mac App Store is disabled.
Are there any Unix / Terminal commands I can use to reset these?

        Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
When the menubar appears select Terminal from the Utilities menu.

  • How can I change the "Ask to join new networks" option using a terminal command?

We are currently switching to a new wireless network throughout our school district and I have pushed commands to connect to the new and remove the old. However, any Macs that have "Ask to join new networks" enabled are jumping over to our unsecure guest network, even if that network has been removed from the list of Preferred Networks. So far the fix has been to remove the guest network from the list of Preferred Networks and then disable Ask to join. The only issue I'm running into now is I have been unable to find a terminal command to change this setting. Once I have the command I can write a script and send that out to all of the Macs.
So is there a way to disable "Ask to join new networks" using command line?

    sed -i "" 's/Prompt/DoNothing/' /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist

Can't seem to sync my phone with iCal because I get a message that says:No writable calendar. I tried the suggestions I found in Help including a Terminal command to no avail.

I can only suggest you now need to somehow link your mobile to sync with the new calendar 'On my Mac'.
I have a work Blackberry whose calendar I sync with an iCal calendar 'On my Mac' using a usb lead and the Blackberry Desktop Manager for Mac. This free piece of software from Blackberry, automatically starts up as soon as I connect the usb to the iMac and it then prompts me to select which calendar 'On the iMac', which is writable, that I want my Blackberry to sync to.
