Can I undo iPhoto to Aperture import?

Hello,
I recently installed Aperture and proceeded to import my iPhoto library; however, instead of all my albums and folders importing as projects, they imported as one giant iPhoto library folder, with the individual folders and smart albums integrated.  Is there a way to convert these albums/folders to projects or undo the import and try again?
Thanks.

Usually a sign of a damaged iPhoto db.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.  If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back. Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.  Regards TD
and thought that iphoto would do the back-up at the same time, a language problem

Trying to follow advice from the forum, intending to restor contents of iphoto (iphoto 11) I made a mistake and did not do a backup first. Is there a way to undo this action?
If not, and if I purchase FileSalvage, will I be able to restore the files or is it a maybe?
I was trying to import my library from iphoto to aperture 3 (purchased today) and when aperture did not do the job, I tried looking for answers here.

  • "can't open iphoto" or aperture?

I just tried to add a picture to my iPhoto (v9.2.3) library and got the error message
so then I tried to open aperture (verion 3.3) and got this error message
Then I clicked upgrade and got another error message
I just purchased and installed the latest aperture update from the app store.
I understand that that Apple has merged the libraries of iPhoto and Aperture to make things work seamlessly. I have not been using Aperture but I sure do want to continue using iPhoto.
Where should one start to get things working again?

There are 4 or 5 similar threads on the forum right now. It's defintiely a glitch. I've not been affected myself on either of my machines, but some folks are having problems.

  • Iphoto to aperture import doubles image size?

    Hi All.
There is an option to either "keep the files in same place" or to "import to aperture folder" when I import my iPhoto Library.
If I select the latter as the video recommends does that mean I am doubling the amount of space on my HD my images are taking up?
    Thanks.

    Hi Jim.
Thanks. Can I please ask you to help me out a little more here?
I am a former PC user (somehow every time I say that I think I must qualify for a 12 step program somewhere). Anyway.
I am finding myself - pretty frequently - dragging images out of iPhoto and putting them on the desktop, and then sometimes uploading these to my Wordpress Blog or gathering them all up so I can see them in Cover Flow or Editing them in Photoshop which is in the XP side of my machine under Parallels (the version of Adobe Elements I have is like version 3 and does not work well...). Basically, I just can't seem to get around doing this.
When I upload to MobileMe or to Flickr I don't have to do this but other things I seem to do it pretty regularly for. This is a little messy but nothing compared to what it was like getting images out of my PC box and then into /some/ kind of order in iPhoto (which was really a nightmare).
Anyway, I am doing this again right now. I have to print up some 24 x 36 inch poster sized images of some of my work. I find the image in iPhoto, drag it to the desktop. Organize these into folders of varying size - and then open in Photoshop. If I find that this image for one reason or another has been reduced in size - and I know I must have a bigger image somewhere - I run a Spotlight search and it comes up as being in the iPhoto Library and I copy this out of the iPhoto Library, crop to fit and then upload to FTP.
I know this all sounds like a kludge and I would like to avoid creating problems for myself moving forward since the move to iPhoto was not so pretty.
Can I /please/ ask you to tell me what is involved in a referenced library and whether from what I am saying in the above this makes sense to you for me to do. I mean, you are saying that if I choose not to import into the Aperture Library then I will basically have a Referenced Library which references the data in the iPhoto Library?
    Is there a third option?
Is there a good way to pickup the photos that are now in my hard drive that are also in the iPhoto library? Is there a good reason to pick these up...
Anyway, hoping to do some recovery work over here...
    Thanks.

  • How can I force iPhoto to store imported movies in a different folder?

I currently have 20GB of AVI video that have been imported over time from my digital camera. I would like to store the videos on a separate drive and still have iPhoto manage them. Is there a way to do this? Am I the only one with this problem?

Another caveat of an alias based library with video files in it is that iPhoto will not let you operate if the drive with those files is not mounted. It will continually ask you to locate the files. It doesn't do that for image files that are aliased, just video/movie files. That can be a big pain.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance. iPhoto doesn't not have to be closed to run it, just idle.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can Automator assign iPhoto keywords on import?

I collect a lot of images from friends, websites, etc. I would like to import a group of photos on my desktop to iPhoto, then auto-assign a specific keyword to that group. Can I do this with Automator?

    Probably a corrupted Library.
What version of iphoto? Assuming 09 or later

  • Can I trash iPhoto library after "importing" them into Photos ?

    Hi everybody.
I have a 157 GB iPhoto library file, with all my photos and videos.
With the last OS X update, Photos was installed.
I told Photos, that the iPhoto library, should be  "Use as System Photo library".
I now have 2 libraries...one for iPhoto and one for Photos. They seem about the same size.
My question now is: Can I now trash the iPhoto library?
Did it import everything from that library, to the Photos library now?
I need the space...Hope somebody can help with this!
    Thank you!

    HI Bobby.
    Thanks's for the answer
I'm going to wait until I have everything uploaded to iCloud then. Takes a while.
Funny thing is, that before the "big import" to Photos, I had about 70GB left on the HD. And the reason why I get suspicious is, that now I have those 2 libraries, each around 157GB. Doesn't make sense to me. Seems like my HD just magically got an extra 100GB , if they in fact are separate libraries.

  • Can I rebuild iPhoto library by importing masters and originals?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and iPhoto 11 and subsequently lost most of the photos in my library, going through the same disastrous experience as many others posting here. All of the recommended methods of rebuilding the library have failed. At this point I'd simply like to rebuild my library by importing masters and originals from the Time Machine backup. I don't care about losing edits to photos; I basically want to start from scratch. Two questions: First, will this work? Second, will the photos still have their metadata (date, geolocation if available) when I import them?

I have to admit that I haven't yet tried iPhoto Library Manager. I'm fairly certain the files are gone from my hard drive; my disk usage shows that 90GB has been freed up since my photos and videos were lost. Also, after multiple attempts to remedy the situation through iPhoto itself, I'd rather just take control myself.
Oh, that raises another question: Will videos also be imported successfully via the method I asked about?

  • Have just downloaded maverick and now can't use iPhoto or aperture...

looks like I have lost all my photos having downloaded mavericks on my macbook pro ... any way back?

Didn't run into the issue you are having but when I have upgraded iphoto in the past I didn't lose any photos and didn't when I upgraded to the new version for mavericks.

  • Can I use both iPhoto and Aperture on the same library?

I like some of the features of iPhoto (like faces and places) but prefer to work in Aperture for its rich tool content. Is there any way I can use both iPhoto and Aperture on the same library? Or, import images from Aperture into iPhoto?
    Thanks much!
    John

I think you may have answered a question I have with the above, but to be sure here is what I would like to do. I currently have iPhoto09 with about 50,000 pictures in it, which seems too much for it to manage. I would like to use Aperture, which I understand is better for managing a large number of photos, but still have iPhoto available to make slide shows, etc. for our AppleTV. Would the process you described above work for that?
    Thank you

  • What is the best way to organize photos? iPhoto or Aperture?

I am a mom taking tons of photos of my young children. On my old PC I used to organize everything within "My Pictures" by Month & Year (May 2008). I am a very organized, linear person and don't like to change the way I do things midstream so I am having a hard time figuring out how to organize our family photos now that I have switched to a Mac with iPhoto and Aperture. In the future I hope to learn about Aperture's professional tools (which as a mom & not a professional photographer I currently do not use). I would love to take photography classes at a local community college someday...
    My questions are as follows:
    1) What is the better way for ME to store our photos? Should I be uploading to iPhoto or Aperture? I basically want all of my "master photo images" in the same location in an organized fashion. I am hoping to do this without clogging up my computer. At this point I am thinking at the end of each year I will burn the year's photos to a disk for save keeping. But until then...
    2) Is the "library" the over-arching place where all photos are stored? In general, I am having a hard time following the hierarchy of where my photos are being stored, how to organize them and how to completely delete bad photos.
    3) Can I do everything I can do in iPhoto in Aperture? Obviously I know I can do more but is it as easy to edit/fix up photos?
I have listened to/watched several tutorials on both programs and have read through many other folks' questions/answers but I am still not sure of what to do.
I really appreciate any help/advice anyone is willing to give!
    Thanks!

I'm not a professional either, just a grandma with a love of digital photography who takes lots of photos. We used to live in a motorhome full time, so we had lots of opportunities to take many photos.
I personally like Aperture better than iPhoto because I like to use some of the NIK software/plugins where I can do the adjusting right in Aperture and don't always have to send the photos to PhotoShop. Also you have a bit more flexibility as to file set ups with Aperture. In iPhoto you don't have as many nesting capabilities. iPhoto is great, but pretty basic.
I had my photos set up as files on the PC, long before I got my first Mac. So I set them up the same way. I'll try to explain
    In Finder:
Pictures (in side bar on left in Finder)
    Folder - My Photos
    2nd Folder - by year
In the year folder I have a folder by date ie: 20000722 (year, month, date) and the photos from that date in there.
Once I got to using Aperture, I have my years set up as "projects" and the dates set up as "Albums". When importing the whole set of photos into Aperture, it was easy. I highlighted the "library", then did a right mouse click and selected "import folders as projects". That imported the photos into Aperture the same way I have them in finder.
Once everything is in Aperture, and you have new photos to add, I make an album under the corresponding year and import.
I do all my photos as referenced and don't duplicate them again, as I have them backed up in a couple of other places.
IMHO you can't back up enough! Don't wait and do it only once a year! Hard drives have a way of crashing and you'll loose all your photos. Use DVD's, thumb drives, ext. hard drives or what ever works for you. But always back up.
When I take my photos off of the memory card, I immediately send a copy to the back up external HD. Once the photos are adjusted etc. I make sure I have a copy elsewhere too. Only then do I erase them off of the memory card. Might be a bit redundant, but I'm not about to loose any of my photos. When we lived in the motorhome we were always aware of the possibility of theft or fire. So I got in the habit of taking some time to reduce the size of the photos and keep them on a thumb drive that I kept out of the RV. If anyone broke in or we had a fire, I'd still have the photos. Maybe not the originals or the bigger size, but we wouldn't loose them either.
If you want more info on non professional filing, send me a PM and I can send you a photo of my file hierarchy . (suemach (at) mac (dot) com)

  • IPhoto to Aperture Questions

I currently have over 17,000 photos in iPhoto.  I really need something more to organize my photos.  I have downloaded the trial version of Aperture and have imported my iPhoto library (referenced).
What are the advantages/disadvantages of referenced vs managed? I imported mine as referenced but I am thinking that I should import them as managed and then delete the iPhoto library once I get Aperture up and running.  I would then use Aperture for my photo management and abandon iPhoto.
Other wise if I leave the photos in Aperture as referenced, can I use iPhoto and Aperture?  example; if I import photos from my camera into iPhoto; do I then have to import them into Aperture?  Picaso, I believe, scans the photo library for new photos; does Aperture do this so that I can use both?
    Thanks Gary

    Hello Gary,
Managed and referenced Libraries both have their advantages:
The big advantage of a managed library is that to the finder it is just one single archive folder, that easily can be copied or moved. And you do not have to keep track of your master image files, Aperture will do that for you. A managed library is perfect, as long as you do not run out of disk space on your drive.
The advantage of a referenced library is, that you can separate the master files from the Aperture library and you can move them to an external drive, when your Aperture Library gets to big to be kept on the internal drive. However, that makes the master file accessible by the Finder, and you might be tempted to proccess them outside Aperture without going thru Aperture.  This way, you can easily corrupt your Aperture LIbrary.
You were asking, if you can share your iPhoto images with Aperture by leaving them inside iPhoto:
That will be risky on the long run. You can store the master files in iPhoto, but that would be pointless, for you must not process or edit or modify the Aperture masters in any other way then by going thru Aperture. Otherwise Aperture will loose the connection between the master files and the edited versions of the masters.
If you still want to keep some images in iPhoto, you can use the iPhoto Browser in Aperture to read your iPhoto Library, and to import recently added images, but adding images to iPhoto will not automatically add them to your Aperture Library.
If you still have questions, go ahead and ask more. I am sure, others will add to this post.

  • Iphoto to Aperture:  keywords from iPhoto to Faces in Aperture?

My 10k photo's in iPhoto were keyworded by peoples names...Is there any way to bulk "name" these keyworded photo's in faces in Aperture. I can group all the photo's together, but I can't figure out how to bulk name them. Please tell me there is an easy way of doing this! My kids all look the same- I can barely tell them apart, so Faces definitely can't!

    iPhoto to Aperture:
In Aperture use the File -> Import -> iPhoto Library
File -> Import -> Show iPhoto Browser
Use the first to get the entire Library, the second to get selected elements.
    Aperture to iPhoto
Create an Export Preset in Aperture and be sure to include the metadata. Export from Aperture to the Finder, import into iPhoto.
You can, of course, access your Aperture Previews with the File -> Show Aperture Library command, but this doesn't get the metadata.
As you can see there is considerable work gone into the notion of migrating from iPhoto to Aperture. There is no work going the other way. Little thought has been given to using both together, as it doesn't make a lot of sense to.

When I imported my photos from iPhoto to Aperture, I appear to have lost all my keywords.  Can I retrieve them and, if so, how?

Keywords are preserved if you use either the Import iPhoto Library or Show iPhoto Browser methods.

  • Aperture Not Seeing All Pictures in IPhoto Folder to Import

    Ok- Another question...
I tried importing a folder or event from IPhoto into Aperture and there are 124 pictures in the IPhoto folder, including jpeg and raw photos. Aperture only sees 3 of them... do I need to change some setting somewhere??
    thanks,
    Georgette

Thanks for the tip about hiding the movies.
To make this easier try the following:
Create a new smart folder in iPhoto called Movies, set the match to "Photo is Movie".
This will allow you to select all movies in one go, you can then hide them, import the photos you need into Aperture.
Use "cmd Z" to undo the hide as you can't unhide the movies from the smart folder as it appears empty.
I have just done the above and saved myself loads of time as I started splitting the movies out of the events I wanted to import, which defeats the object of events.
I too will be sending feedback to Apple over this as this is definitely a bug. The import dialogue should just display the photos and ignore the movies.
    Regards
