It's not obsolete as much as the first gen simply lacks the power to run the newer operating systems. IT doesn't have enough RAM. If someone managed to hack it to get iOS 6 or 7 on there they'd just have a slow, boggy and unresponsive device. (think putting windows 7 on an old laptop.
Unfortunately software moves faster than hardware. Every thing goes obsolete. I've had my ipad 2 for two and a half years now and I know it only has so much longer left to it too. Just the 'joys' of advancing technology.

If your phone is in recovery mode (You see the iTunes graphic on the phone), you MUST connect the device to a computer and restore the operating system. There is no supported way to get around it. The device had a problem installing the update and it crashed. Sorry.

You said it is an iPhone 3G... but the iPhone 3GS is listed in your signature. This is an important difference... can you please clarify which model you have?
iPhone 3G can only be updated to iOS 4.2.1.
iPhone 3GS can go to the latest iOS 5.1.
If you check your current version under Settings > General > About > Software Version, and your current OS is higher than 4.2.1, then you have a 3GS. If you have 4.2.1 and iTunes says it's the latest version, you have a 3G.

It sounds like may actually have a 2nd generation. Please check the model number on the back, if it is A1288, it is a 2nd generation and can not be upgraded beyond 4.2.1.

For weeks now some of our third-party Apps appear under Updates in the App Store app, but Update All is grayed-out and tapping an individual Update button only takes us to the app itself. Searching for answers indicates many users are experiencing the same behavior, and some discussions suggest it is somehow tied to the release of iOS 8, but there no specific confirmation of what is happening.
Can anyone provide an official, definitive Apple explanation of why this behavior is occurring ? ? ! !
If it is related to iOS 8, you would think we would be able to find out about it and not be left wondering if the only way the apps we use every day can be updated is by installing iOS 8 . . . . . . .

I am sorry you are not in a position to replace the iPad. It is stating the obvious, but nothing lasts forever - especially something like an original iPad. IMHO, there is nothing you can do to address the issues you have posted about.

Can't finish update to ios 5.0.1

I was in the process of updating my iphone 4 software to ios 5.0.1 when I got an error message. My phone is stuck on the connect to itunes screen and I can't get it to connect even after I have restarted both phone and computer. What do I do?

For anyone with this same problem, I had to plug my iphone into another computer and restore it from there. I then could plug back into my computer and restore from my backup so I didn't lose any of my stuff. I still don't know what was wrong but it was a pain in the butt.

I Don't understand why the apps would expire. Apps that work in iOS 5 should still work on your iPad. Did you try updating these apps and it was unsuccessful?

You can't. Once a phone is upgraded it cannot be downgraded.
