Can I update a 1G with a 30gb+ hard-drive?

Hi, I currently own a 4G 20gb iPod, and now I need to upgrade for size. I'm really, really into getting a 1st Gen, but obviously, they didn't even come in 20gb, let alone 30 or more. But if I bought a new 40gb or 60gb drive online (off of spare parts sites or whatnot)... could I install it myself in the 1G? Having enough room for it inside the old iPod certainly isn't an issue, because (I'm assuming) the reduction in drive size over the years is primarily what makes the new iPods so much smaller,right? But would a newer drive still be compatible? Or have the hard-drives been changing in ways other than size/capacity that would make it impossible to install them in a Gen 1?
I've heard conflicting answers from people on this... I did hear that you could install a 20gb 4G drive in a 3G, but even if that's true, the drive compatibility could still have changed from 1st Gen.

there's no advantage to having the application on your external drive, you should leave it in your applications folder on your internal drive. if you insist on changing the app's location, you'll always have to then copy the app by hand to the external drive

Hello, and sorry if this has been answered before, i did have a look, but with no results.
a while ago my ibook filled up, and so i bought an external hard drive. i then dragged the photos across onto it, deleted them off my i book. no problems.
a while later i read about setting up my external hard drive to use it as an iphoto library. i did this, pressed the "alt" key whilst iphoto opened and i was able to open my photos from the external drive.
however, all the photos that i'd orignally transferred were not there, only the most recent ones.
so, to sum up, when i look at the photos on my external drive, they are all there, but when i try opening them with iphoto i can only see some of them.
how can i re-set up my external drive so i can see all my photos using i book?
i was thinking i could drag the photos that don't open from the external drive into iphoto, then redrag the entire iphoto library back onto the external drive. however, i only have 2 gb of space on my ibook, and about 20000 photos in total.

i will try and explain again.
i still have my iphoto library on my internal drive.
i initially dragged and dropped the photos from iphoto onto the external drive and deleted them off my internal drive to free up space.
then i read how i better way to do it would be to drag my iphoto library from the finder, onto my external drive, because then i would be able to open it from iphoto. so i did that and when i pressed the option key whilst iphoto was setting up, accessed my iphoto file on my external drive.
the only photos to appear were the ones from when i dragged the entire iphoto file from finder, not the previous lot that i had dragged from iphoto itself.
so, any ideas how i can get the photos that aren't showing up using iphoto, to show up?

Your iWeb data is stored, not in your actual published html files, but in a file called Domain.sites which is stored in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. If you want to work on your site on another computer, copy this file to a thumb drive to move it around.

What to do with old 30GB hard drive after replacement?

Hi everybody,
am going to replace my 30GB HDD with a 160GB HDD the next days, I am preparing everything around, as I am going to do it byf myself. One question besides all the data-saving, backing up and shifting to other drives is becoming increasingly interesting:
What do I do as soon as all the contents of the old drive are secured somewhere? Do I run a full erase on the drive? How can this be done?
(Sorry for the stupid quote, but the picture of a snake comes to my mind that eats up itself and whoops?!... away it is. ) I understand how to safely erase almost everything but the OS cannot be erased, correct?

Once you have the replacement and file/data transfer done, you can pick up a HD enclosure for about $20-30 at most any electronics store and put that 30g drive in it. Then you can erase it and use it as a removable HD. I will do that when I upgrade a HD, no sense trashing a perfectly good HD, even a smaller one, when you can still use it for the price of an enclosure.

Click on it, then click to download the updated apps. Take a look at the video Illaass pointed to, it shows what you'll have to do. If you've never poked inside the innards of a computer before, it looks a bit scary but its pretty easy to do if you view the video a couple times and take it slowly. But I honestly have to say it is closer to a moderate task than an easy task so you may want to take den.thed's advice and find an independant Apple service provider. You won't get this done at an Apple store.
Another possibility is to get an SSD in a thunderbolt or USB3 enclosure. It won't be quite as fast as if it were installed internally but you won't lose much and if you decide against doing the upgrade yourself it will probably be less expensive than going to an AASP.

Be sure you've turned off any antivirus, spyware, malware type software. Then try [Unable to update or restore|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808]. Hopefully that will work, or you'll get more specific error messages which [this kb|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275] can help interpret.
