Can I update from osx 10.4.11 to snow leopard?

I have a mac book pro with OSX 10.4.11 and would like to upgrade it to OSX Snow Leopard. Can I simply proceed or is there an in between update necessary? Thanks.

Purchase a Snow Leopard DVD with which you can upgrade your current system. Before upgrading do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If all is OK then continue with the installation of Snow Leopard.

Can't update from OSX 10.4.11 to 10.4.2

I have a G4 MDD Dual 867 Mhz. I have downloaded a OSX 10.4.2 updater from the Apple downloads area. I have OSX 10.4.11 and it won't allow me to install it on the selected drive, and I get error message:
"You cannot install Mac OSX Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements of this update."
Can someone tell me what's wrong?

Nothing. Mac OS X 10.4.11 is the eleventh update to Mac OS X 10.4, while Mac OS X 10.4.2 is only the second. The numbers in a portion of the version number are supposed to be read as an unit instead of separate ones.

Can't update from OSX 10.8 to OSX 10.8.2

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 13 inch display with 500GB HDD and 4 GB RAM. The unit shipped with OSX 10.8. In my SW updates, I'm trying to update iPhoto, but it says it requries OSX 10.8.2. However, 10.8.2 does not show up in my "updates" in the App Store, and if I try to buy it in the App Store, it says I already have Mountain Lion. I assume the upgrade from 10.8 to 10.8.2 is free, so why does 10.8.2 not show up in my app store? How can I upgrade to 10.8.2?

Hello! So here are the specs.
I have an Early 2011 MacBook Pro, which came with OSX 10.6.6 by default.
I've lost my installer disk so I though I'd buy a retail one from the online Apple Store, and version 10.6.3 is what they sent me.
Simply running the install OSX app won't work, I get a msg saying:
-- You can't use this version of the application "Install Mac OS X" with this version of OS X. You have "Install Mac OS X" 23.1.1. --
So, I've tried booting from the new disk hoping to erase my current drive and install Snow Leopard, but no can do, I get 3 beeps and have to force shutdown (not RAM related, see below). Laptop works fine when I spare it this maneuver.
After some research I understand 2 things:
1. Only the original installer disk will let me restore factory settings (and I don't have it).
2. I can only install the default OSX (10.6.6) or a later version (that 10.6.3 DVD may not have the correct drivers for my system).
Are these conclusions right? If so, would the Apple Store replace my disk for an updated 10.6.6. one? If not, then what are my options?

I know my operating system is really behind. Now that OSX lion is out I am very behind in terms of my operating system. Do I need to buy snow leopard first and then lion. If so can I just buy the leopard upgrade or do I need to buy the box set also? Thanks for the help I am really clueless about this stuff!

If your computer meets the requirements you could upgrade to Snow Leopard or Lion, but upgrading to Lion requires that Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later first be installed. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD at your local Apple retailer or online for $29 USD.
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current Tiger Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and later.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
E. If updating:
Download and install update(s)
Use Software Update, or
Download standalone updater(s).
Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
1GB of memory
5GB of available disk space
DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Lion System Requirements

I am working with an iMac 7.1 and the OSX 10.5.8.
How can I install Snow Leopard. Do I have to burn everything before installing ?

Is the 10.6.8 Combo updater compulsory ? It is almost 900MB.
If you have a slow internet conenction, you can do what others have done:
The 10.6.8 update is a free-standing DMG file so can be downloaded from another computer, transfered to a DVD or thumb drive, and then moved to your desktop. Once the dmg is on your desktop, you can run the updater normally.
See if anyone you know has a Mac on a faster internet connection. That could be a school or business. Even if you have no one in your area with such capabilities, I'm sure you can find a friend farther away who could snag the download and snail-mail you a DVD.
Your iMac is the oldest one that still supports Mountain Lion so don't expect dazzling speed. Officially, you can install up to 4G or RAM (two 2-GB modules) or, unofficially, up to 6MB (one 2GB modlue + one 4GB module).
You have two RAM slots; that model usually shipped with a 1GB module in each slot. You'll likely have to pull all your existing RAM to install the new ones.
If you are in North America, we can sugested some trusted vendors of Mac-compatible RAM.

Can't Update to Aperture 2.1.4 on Snow Leopard

I fresh installed Aperture 2 to my Macbook, running Snow Leopard. When I launch the app it says "You can't use this version of Aperture with this version of OS X."
I understand I need to update to Aperture 2.1.4 for it to work with Snow Leopard. But when I try to install the update it says: "Aperture 2.0 or later required to install this software."
What do I do? I can't download and install the full version of the 2.1.4 trial because Apple took it down.

I had already deleted the .plist and it didn't make a difference.
I got it working though. I downloaded the Aperture 2.1.4 Trial linked to at the bottom of this thread:

The trial wouldn't install (even after I Appzapped my previous Aperture 2 install). The install would run, say complete, but nothing would be added to the Applications folder.
I eventually went into the private/var/db/receipts and delete the Aperture files.
It installed fine after that.

Can't print from Mail, TextEdit, or Preview in Snow Leopard

Installed Snow Leopard on a new Mac Mini with a newly formatted drive. Successfully set up network HP printers using IP Printing option. Able to print to these printer from all installed applications EXCEPT TextEdit, Preview, and Mail. Print dialog never displays at all after selecting "print" in Mail. Print dialog window does display for TexEdit and Preview but clicking "print" in the dialog window all the options blank out and can't cancel or close the print dialog window without quitting app.
However, when we take this same mini to a different physical location on a different network, printing works normally in all apps. We are guessing that Appletalk has something to do with this. The problem network uses a Cisco 3600 router. We disabled Appletalk in the configuration but that had no effect.

Nothing shows up in CUPS error log to trying to print from Mail. Pasted below is consistent message we get in Console when attempting to print from Mail.
Today, inexplicably, we can print from Preview and TextEdit.

Can't print from any application in OS X Snow Leopard??

Before the print dialog box comes up, the spinning beachball wheel comes up.
I then have to force quit the application. I have tried resetting the print system but no joy.
I have done a complete wipe and time machine restore and the problem is still there.
I have binned the print prefs and also the relevant print folder and downloaded updates. not worked.
Done disk permissions and disk first aid.
Any other suggestions??!!

Yep, tried that, however I created a new user and the problem was still there, so I used time machine to go back a couple of weeks and restore the main library folder. Now it prints fine, so there was something in that folder the system didn't like

Depending upon the specific model you have you can upgrade to either 10.4.x or 10.5.x. Neither are available from Apple any longer, so you will need to look to eBay or Amazon for copies. Be sure to only purchase retail copies and not gray labled machine-specific copies.
If your eMac came with 10.3 originally and has a clock speed of 1 GHz or higher, then you can install Leopard, 10.5.x.
If you don't want to lose data then make backups.
