Can I upgrade? Also, tethering/ mobile hotspot question

I currently have an iPhone 4 and my contract is up am now paying month to month.  My Verizon shows this but says I am not eligible for an upgrade until February. Could I still get the iPhone 5 at the discounted price since my contract is up? Also, *611 told me that tethering and mobile hot spot is included with the new share everything plans. Does this mean I can get rid of the expensive USB I have from Verizon for Internet at home and plug my phone into my computer to tether it for Internet if I get the share everythin plan? Thanks!

I am in a similar situatuion, why is my contract month to month, but I cant upgrade until 11/8/12 at discount.
Can I not just cancel my account, then start a new line with new phone at discount?
I just got in touch with Verizon, this is the explanation that was given to me:
My wife did upgrade her phone 3/8/2011 -- so she got a new 2 year contract.
Shortly there after, we went on a family plan -- at that point in time, I took over responsibility of the account, so at that point the contract for that line went down to 1 year. (said the customer service rep)
So the contract on that line ended 3/8/2012 -- while she can't upgrade until 11/8/2012.
I CAN cancel the line without penalty.
I can not upgrade through the website, or with the gentleman I was talking with.
He said my best option was to ask for a manager at a vzw retail location, and explain the situation -- that Verizon usually doesn't have a problem upgrading someone to keep them in contract.

I am contemplating purchasing an iPad, and then possibly a Macbook pro.  Currently, I have an iMac G5, and a Powerbook G4.  Neither which can be upgraded past Leopard.  My question is do I need to have Snow Leopard in order to be able to update an iPad? Do I need to reverse my thought on which to buy first?
I plan on keeping the iMac and PB until they cease to work ( have replaced HD's on both already).  I mostly use the PB-- lots of writing, surfing, email, etc.
    Your thoughts?

The minimum Mac specs (from http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) are :
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.2 or later recommended (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access
So you only need Leopard, not Snow Leopard

  • Can I buy an iPad which can be used as a Mobile Hotspot and used to make Phone Calls?

Can I use the new iPad as a phone and a mobile hotspot?

Yes, it can be used as a mobile hotspot if your carrier supports it. iPads can only make calls using Voice Over IP apps such as Skype or FaceTime.

  • HP (Palm) Pre 2 and mobile hotspot question

HP had their webOS event Wednesday and the word is that the Pre 2 will be available for pre-order on Verizon today (Feb 10). I am certainly interested, but I have a question:
Will the Mobile Hotspot feature be free like it is on the Pre Plus?

    http://www.precentral.net/verizon-pre-2-now-available-free-mobile-hotspot-still-tow
This is really confusing. From precentral.net (above link), it said the 3g hot spot feature is free and confirmed.
PalmPre2_4Me wrote:I'm looking for an answer on this as well.  I just chatted with Verizon, they didn't know anything about at first, but did research it.  Told me that while it isn't listed as a checkout option, customer service would add it for an additional $20.
Now for the confusion, off the HP/Palm site, which links to a Verizon page, I found the following for the Pre 2:
Support Up To 5 WiFi-enabled Devices (3G Mobile Hotspot Service Included Free)
Now, I'm looking to upgrade ahead of the Palm Pre 3 - since I'm betting with that release the Mobile Hotspot feature wouldn't be free.  If anyone has any better info and would share, I would be most appreciative.  I want to get the new device, but for an additional $240/yr, not sure it is worth it.  Plus if I wait 3/6 months, the new device would be here and I might as well just upgrade then.
Thanks for any insight you might be able to provide!

  • A Few Questions About Mobile Hotspot

    Hi,
Can you just add unlimited mobile hotspot for a few days then cancel it? Also will I just pay for those days or will I pay a full month?
Side notes I do have unlimited data and have had is since prior to July 7 2011
Any help would be appreciated. And extra kudos for the sooner cause I am leaving for vacation soon.

im not as familiar with verizons policies as another carrier who shall remain nameless, but yes, you very well should be able to. and it would be prorated not a full month.
EDIT: its actually VERY common practice especially for people taking vacations.

  • How do I set up my iphone 5s to use it as a mobile hotspot?

I recently switched over to the More Everything plan and wish to enable mu iPhone 5s so that it can be used as a mobile hotspot. How do I do this (e.g.. what settings do I need to change on my iPhone). Also: Is it a one-time setup (enable it and then just leave it alone and enabled always) or do I go through the enabling process only for the times when I"ll actually be using the iPhone as a hoy spot?
Thanks for reading this and any replies.

    Hi Richardro,
We are so excited to hear of your interest in the Personal Hotspot feature! Click here for the instructions to setup the Hotspot on the device. You will only have to setup the device and account once. You may have to turn the personal hotspot off/on when using the feature, per it may stop broadcasting the Wi-fi signal after long period of inactivity.

Your mobile carrier supports tethering/personal hotspot.
Also, your data plan with your carrier should include a tethering option.

  • Verizon iPhone - mobile hotspot and other questions about the data options

I just ordered the Verizon iPhone. Can anyone explain the options here:
    1) Unlimited corporate email & Web (business and personal email) vs. Unlimited email and web for smartphones (personal email) - what's the difference?
    2) "3G Mobile Hotspot 2GB" - does this mean that there's no way I can share my 3G connection via wifi without paying the extra $20/month?? How about tethering to a single computer (USB, BT, or WiFi) - does that also require this extra option?
    3) equipment protection - what's the difference between Extended Warranty, Asurion Wireless Phone Protection, and Total Equipment Coverage?
    thanks in advance,
    Mike

    Hi
Regarding your #2 question; yes, you must pay $20/mo to use the 3G Hotspot aspect of the iPhone, same as with any of Verizon's phones that offer this feature such as the Droid X, HTC phones, etc. And, there is NO additional charge to tether it to your computer; it's $20/mo regardless. You can still use the iPhone's WiFi feature to search the web which is part of the regular data plan. We're only talking about paying the $20/mo for the "up to 5 devices" jumping on your phone as a hot spot.
I'm an Apple fan, have my MacBook Pro, but my phone is a Droid X. I've been a Verizon member since a year before they became Verizon. Additionally, I am part of the Verizon & Motorola test forum; testing new software updates as they come along.
Something you should know about Verizon's 3G Hot Spot feature; it has issues. Those of us in the Motorola & HTC forums have experienced identical issues with regard to the 3G Hot Spot feature; it disconnects every 2 minutes, even when you are actively surfing the net. Verizon & Motorola Support have been very helpful to provide what they believe are fixes, including: changing the channel, hard resets, clearing cache, etc. It does not work. Most of us believe, this is NOT a Verizon issue, but a phone maker issue.
I also have Verizon's MiFi 2200. It costs $59/mo and is purely a hot spot device; again up to 5 devices. I use it at home, for my lap top and for those who need connectivity. It outperforms the 3G hot spot feature of the Motorola & HTC phones by leaps & bounds, and I suspect it will out perform the 3G hot spot feature on the iPhone. Additionally, you get 5GB of download with the MiFi which Verizon is planning on offering increases to 8GB & 10GB. There is NO plan to increase the 2GB download limitation on the 3G Hot spot of the iPhone & other phones, and anyone who does basic software downloads & pics, knows 2GBS is not a lot space.
So, I would recommend not paying the $20 until this is resolved. If you do, you could pay $39 more for a total of $59/mo for the MiFi, download the software to you home computer & notebook, and end up canceling your home internet service. I did this and have saved $70/mo in my total utilities.
One other important note: Verizon's VZManager Software for their phones & MiFi. If you did pay the $20/mo for the iPhone and decided to tether to your USB port (for power while using) and you were to use the 3G hot spot feature, it will NOT work on 64 Bit computers, regardless if you are using the WiFi feature or directly using VZManager. The MiFi has this same issue. It will only work on 32 Bit when tethered. So, you'd have to reboot your computer to 32 Bit, if you have that ability. On a Macbook Pro, simply restart holding down the "3" & "2" keys.
I have no idea why Verizon can't simply upgrade the firmware, even recent firmware upgrades have not resolved this. Most new computers are 64 Bit now.
Despite this, I use my MiFi 100% untethered and carry my charge cord in my bag as it also works on my Droid, and I presume they may do the same for the iPhone; reduces the need for multiple power cords.
I really looked forward to the 3G feature of the Motorola & HTC phones, but honestly, it's just not there yet; mine was slower than Dial Up, and I'm not kidding.

  • Tethering Pixi mobile hotspot with vzmanager?

I recently switched from mifi2000 to the palm pixi for internet usage at home. On wifi devices this works great but with the mifi I could also connect to the old desktop (without wifi) with the usb and use vz manager to get a 3g connection. Any ideas if the pixi can be tethered to a non wifi compatible desktop. I see vzmanager has a treo that is compatible why not the pixi or palm?
Any help would be great, Thanks

Devices that include Mobile Hotspot are not available to be used as a tethered modem.  You can purchase USB network adapters to be used with your home computer.  This would only cost you about $40 at most electronic retailers.

  • IPhone Tethering (hotspot) question.

    Hello!
I was thinking about getting an iPhone. I also have a macbook pro and my family has ipads. I was wondering if I would be able to use my phone's online services with my computer and my family's tablets in the form of the iphone's hotspot (just for the record, I am on Verizon). If I were to do this, would using the iphone's hotspot cost any more money. I was also thinking about simply getting a mobile hotspot to use with my ipod I have now, my comuter, and my family's tablets. I was wondering if this would be a better idea (deal) than an iphone's hotspot.
    Thanks,
    Jack

I recently upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus from the original Droid (1) and was "grandfathered" in with the unlimited data plan.  I'm wondering if a) tethering my phone / wifi hotspoting my phone would be included with that unlimited data plan or b) do I have to add tethering/hotspoting to my plan (if so how much extra would this be) and c) if I were to add this feature to my current plan, would it override/nullify my "grandfathered" unlimited data plan.
    Thanks for helping,

No the hotspot would be an extra charge. However since you have a 4G device, the hotspot is $30/month for unlimited data for it.

MobileMe & dot Mac will still work last I heard.

Don't delete your old account yet. Just setup a new one in Mail>Preferences>Accounts, little plus icon. Choose IMAP as account type, not ,mac or MobileMe.

  • Mobile Hotspot not working after upgrading to 4.4.2

My husband and I have identical Motorola phones. He let his upgrade to Android 4.4.2 over a month ago. Since then, his Mobile Hotspot cannot be used to connect to our home PC. If you use your mobile hotspot, DO NOT LET IT UPGRADE!!!!!!!!
Three visits to local Verizon store, more than 50 power-off's (many of them soft boots), a long phone call to Verizon support. Still not working. Except once two weeks ago for several hours, then failed again. About a week ago,our HP laptop started connecting to the Hotspot, but the desktop cannot. My hotspot (which is fortunately still running 4.1.2) provides internet access just fine. Strange new symptom last week: once the laptop has connected to the 4.4.2 Hotspot, the desktop can as well. Sigh. Verizon offered to replace his phone under warranty, but the new one is expected to arrive with the latest version. I am not optimistic about that. Others must be having the same problem. Perhaps not as desperate as us because it is our only internet service at our rural home. We are still paying full price for our plan, but do not have the service. And, we have spent literally a hundred hours trying to debug this. Come on, Verizon, this needs to be fixed!

    RAZR M
Just tried another soft boot. Same behavior.
    Thank you for responding.

  • Can't get 3G Mobile Hotspot to work with Cr-48

I can't get my Google Cr-48 (the free Google computer) to connect to my 3G Mobile Hotspot. It sees the phone, associates with it, but it won't connect--I get an error message every time.
I know the hotspot works with other computers, both laptop and desktop, without any trouble at all. And the Cr-48 connects to other routers and wireless hotspots and also to the Verizon 3G network without any trouble.
I'm paying the $20/month charge for the 3G Mobile Hotspot, but there's no point in keeping it if I can't use it for the Cr-48, which is the real reason why I would pay for it. Any suggestions?

Clearly the device from verizon works, I would try to contact a computer tech to repair your computer
Really it should be as simple as turn on, connect, go. If it isn't there is a break down somewhere in that computer
    What error msg?

  • Are there settings for my mobile hotspot where I can assign ip addresses?

I was wondering if there were settings like logging onto the domain of a router. Is there a way to assign ip addesses to certain devices that connect? I am using my Gs3 phone. Any help would be appreciated.

        msnagyjr,
Great question! There is not a way to assign an IP address to a particular device. You can control what devcies are able to connect to your mobile hotspot though the "Allowed devcie list". Settings>Mobile Hotspot (On)>Allowed device list.
