Can I upgrade CS5 on a Mac running Maverick?

I have a Macbook Pro, running Maverick, and older version of Creative Suite, CS5. Still works, but I have been getting notices that upgrades to this are available. BUT...cannot tell anything about the upgrades - if they will work on this platform, if they are free or pay. So I am afraid to try to install them. I spent the last hour trying to contact Adobe by phone to ask this simple question - are upgrades available to me. Guess, what? They can't be reached by phone. Every time I travel their phone tree, I end up on a branch they cut off. Not good product support in my opinion and if I were starting over would really question using these products. But that is the way it is. I realize that likely no one out there can answer this for me, but thought I would put it up in case you have dealt with a similar issue.
Thanks,
Richard

I have version 7.0.4.553 - according to the info function. Maybe this is the latest.

Can I upgrade my Intel Xeon MAC PRO running OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5.8?

Yes. You can actually upgrade it all the way to Lion should you so wish, although you would need to first purchase and install Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would skip Leopard as it's more expensive and obsolete. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD at any Apple retailer - $29.00. You can update it by downloading Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. The use the App Store to purchase and download Lion should you choose to do so - $30.00.
I would consider expanding your RAM to at least 4 GBs or more especially if you decide to upgrade to Lion. Before upgrading see the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

Hi - I have an older MacBook Pro (osx 10.4.11. Can I upgrade it so it will run snowleopard?

    All MBPs up to and including the 2011 models can run Snow Leopard.  You will have to purchase a disk from the Apple online store;

  • "You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X"

I have a 3 week old MacBook Pro 2.66 (4GB RAM) bought online with the Leopard 10.5.8 Operating System installed. I've tried to install Snow Leopard tonight and it gives me the message "You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X." How can that be? I've tried the REPAIR DISK option and it says that my internal HDD is OK - in green. Yet I am unable to install the new OS. What gives?

    Jeff,
It is possible that you are "stuck in the middle." The build of Snow Leopard resident on the DVD may actually have been "solidified" prior to the build that came with your Mac. As a result, the Snow Leopard installer doesn't "recognize" what is currently running on your Mac. Put another way, it doesn't know how to go about upgrading that installation. Yours is the first case of this that I have seen, if that is indeed what is going on here.
Regardless of the cause, you do not have to "upgrade." You can simply erase what's currently on your Mac and install Snow Leopard. You'll want to have a good Time Machine backup first, of course, and I recommend you find a suitable external drive to do so, if you haven't already.
When you do have that backup, you can boot to the Snow Leopard installer, open Disk Utility to erase the internal hard drive, install Snow Leopard, then use the "Migration Assistant" to bring your user data and account(s) back into the new installation. You probably have not had much time to accumulate a bunch of third-party apps, so having to reinstall those should be no problem. Even if you have found some that you like, keep in mind that all of our user data and settings for those apps will already be back in place, along with your HOME folder(s).
If you need further instructions to complete any of the steps I have outlined, we'll be glad to help.

  • Locked-out: "You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed

Absolute rookie move. Bought a Mac Mini server (June 2012 model) on E-bay and it came with the previous owner's log-in account still on it. Tried to re-install 10.6 server software with the CDs that came with it but  got the message "You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed". Any advice on how I can fix this? I'm hoping I didn't buy a brick that I can't do anything with.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    ~LJ

What OS X software is installed on the box?  OS X, or OS X Server?
If it's a newer OS X version and you want OS X Server from the installer disks, wipe the disk and reinstall.
Officially, it's not likely that a recent Mac Mini Server would even officially support something as old as OS X Server 10.6; here's the list of the minimum versions (HT1159) — I don't see a June 2012 model, the closest to that acquisition date would probably be a mid-2011 Mac Mini or Mac Mini Server model, and those require OS X or OS X Server 10.7, or later.
OS X 10.7 also didn't usually arrive with DVD disks, so that may be an old DVD from some other box.
To confirm the Mac Mini model, see  > About This Mac > More Info...

  • Mac running Mavericks Crashes Firefox Daily. EXC_BAD_ACCESS / KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE Please help.

    Hi,
I have a Mac running Mavericks and Firefox keeps crashing most daily for the past three months and I get a "Firefox has crashed submit report" popup.
It is usually if I am playing a youtube video or a movie (more then one) at a time. Or if one video is loading and I try to play or load another. I notice if I "que" or pre-load a long video (more then 15 minutes), then try to play a new one it will crash.
I have tried the following solutions none of which have worked:
    A) Uninstalling and reinstalling firefox
    B) Reset Firefox (Help, troubleshooting information, reset firefox)
    C) Turn off hardware acceleration (Firefox, preferences, un-check hardware acceleration)
    D) Turn off "enable hardware acceleration in "youtube" (it now asks me each time if I would allow it to play)
    E) Plugin Check and Updates are all up to date (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/) I only have:
    SharePoint Browser Plug-in (research)
    Default Browser Helper (research)
These plugins are up to date: (as of March 7th 2014)
Shockwave for Director 12.0.6 (Up to Date)
Shockwave Flash 12.0.0.70 (Up to Date)
QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.3 (Up to Date)
Sometimes I get this as the "signature": libsystem_platform.dylib@0x4280
Again I have tried the above solutions but they have not worked. Any help or advice will be appreciated.
    Thank you
    Shawn

I have a MAC running Maverick. MP3 sounds will not play in Safari or FireFox, but will play if you download the file locally to the Desktop. How to resolve this?

You probably have an internet plugin installed that is preventing the MP3s from playing. I just checked a site with an MP3, and it played, rather than downloaded.
The internet plugin folders are at:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins and
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
(~/Library is hidden by default. Let me know if you don't know how to access it.)
My internet plugins were all in /Library; there were none in ~/Library.
Try moving these folders to the desktop (don't delete them), restarting, and then seeing if the MP3s play.
They it will be trial and error to see which plugin is responsible.

  • Hi, I am running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L31a) Mac Pro. Can I upgrade to enable the new OSX maverick software?

I am unsure about upgrading the OSX 10.5.8 (9L31a) software on my mac pro (2006-7) model. Would or could I upgrade to snow leopard to enable the new OSX Maverick to work on my unit.
    Thank you.

A 2007 Mac Pro isn't capable of running Mavericks. The newest OS it can run is Lion 10.7.5; installing it requires going through Snow Leopard or finding a Mac OS X 10.7 install thumbdrive.

  • HT1338 what can I upgrade to from a Mac OS X 10.5.8

I want to download an upgraded version to my Mac.  What options do I have? I don't have any idea, and don't want to download something that will not go with my computer.. HELP

Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
      1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
      2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
      3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
      4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
      5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
      6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
      7. Xserve (Early 2009)
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
Model Eligibility for Snow Leopard and Lion.
    Snow Leopard General requirements

  • WIndows XP/Vista can not recognize shared folder on Mac running Leopard

    Hi,
I have problem with sharing file from my Mac running Leopard to my Windows machine (running XP and Vista). I follow the instruction on this website. http://lifehacker.com/software/mac-os-x-leopard/leopard-simplifies-networking-31 7033.php
My Windows machine 'see' the Mac. When i double-click or press enter on the Mac comp icon on my windows machine, I do not get any confirm box to enter username and password. Instead, I am allowed to view the content which is empty ( although I enabled some shared folder on my Mac)
Any suggestion to solve the problem pls .

If your Mac Pro has FileVault on, your Windows XP machine will not be able to access the files, as FileVault disables SMB and printer sharing for Windows XP clients.
In case FileVault is not on, you could try temporarily disabling the Windows firewall and the anivirus and/or internet security suite on the WinPC, and see whether it can access the files on your Mac Pro.
    Good Luck.

  • How can I upgrade CS5 to CS6?

How can I upgrade Photoshop CS5 to CS6, and cannot use CC because I would need a different operating system?

Good gracious!  Is there really still an upgrade path from CS5?  I'd have bet serious money that option finished at least a year ago.  Sounds like I would have lost the bet.
BTW  I expect those prices are still dependent on where the OP lives.  Upgrading from CS5 to CS6 cost me NZ$800 dollars when CS6 first came out.  Thankfully, price gouging is appears to be a thing of the past with CC, but I believe that only applies to NZ and Oz, and that Europe still enjoys a price hike for Adobe products.
Anyone like to clarify that for me?

  • I can't upgrade my macbook mid 2007 to maverick its because is to old ? help me  guys

i need help guys i dont know why i can not upgrade my macbook 13-inch mid 2007 from os x lion 10.7.5 to maverick

No, the 2007 MacBook will not be able to run Mountain Lion and Mavericks,
It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks require 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion and Mavericks no longer support Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion and Mavericks are pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.
