I have a 2 1/2 year old iMac still in the box with Leopard pre-installed. How do I get my iMac up to date with Mountain Lion? Is Mountain Lion too much for my iMac's Intel 3.06GHz Core i3 processor and 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM?

No, you don't have to bother with 10.5.8.
When you have installed Snow Leopard, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:

I am trying to update my Mac from OS X 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion 10.8.4. I have read online that I can no longer buy Mountain Lion from the App Store, and that I must purchase Mac X Maverick instead, but cannot find that on the App Store either. Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

I'd suggest you hold off for at least version 10.8.2 to come out. The first two, 10.8.0 and 10.8.1, have proven problematic in terms of battery performance for a significant number of users (see the corresponding thread reaching Biblical proportions in this forum).

Hi, my MacBook has the following specs: 2 GHx Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, with about 200 GB of available space on my hard drive, running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I tried to purchase and download Mountain Lion and got a message stating "We could not complete your purchase, OSX Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer". Hi, You understood perfectly, but Apple seems a bit secretive as to what is required, & many Macs can't run ML/10.8, but may run Lion/10.7.
(For my money, OSX went really down hill fast after 10.6.8)

Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.
But you have to call Apple to get Lion/10.7 if it indeed will run it.

i recently got a macbook and it is quite an old one because its second hand, and it has software version 10.4.11 on it.
i've had troubles downloading things because no programs are built for such old software.

You can upgrade from 10.4 straight to 10.6 with no problems. Any program that runs under 10.4 should run under10.6. See this list for compatibility with 10.6: http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ You might have to upgrade some drivers for printers, etc....

Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store. The price is $19.99.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly. You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.

Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

Can't print from Tiger to a shared printer on Mountain Lion

Hello,
I have a branch office that's running Mountain Lion on one computer and Tiger on the other. How can I print from the Tiger machine to a shared printer on the Mountain Lion computer? I should point out that this isn't a problem when the printer is shared from the Tiger machine, just the other way around.
