Can I upgrade from mac OSX 10.6.8 to 10.8?

Can I upgrade from mac OSX 10.6.8 to 10.8?

Same list as stedman1, but uses model numbers which is slightly more accurate.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) model number 7,1 or higher
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) model number 5,1 or higher
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Xserve (Early 2009) model number 3,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.         Application Compatibility
If you have applications that you want to use that aren’t compatible, you can retain Snow Leopard and create a new partition to install Mountain Lion on or you can run Snow Leopard  server in a virtual mode.
If your computer isn't compatible, you might be able to upgrade to Lion.        Computer Compatibility - Lion
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again.

I keep getting my browser is no longer supported. how can I upgrade from mac os x 10.6.8 . Any help would be appreciated

Open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.

Can I upgrade my Mac OSX v. 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard (10.6)?

Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
If it's an Intel iMac then yes.

  • Can I upgrade a Mac OSX 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion?

I want to know if It is possible to upgrade my Mac OSX 10.6.8 to mountain Lion..

I'd suggest you hold off for at least version 10.8.2 to come out. The first two, 10.8.0 and 10.8.1, have proven problematic in terms of battery performance for a significant number of users (see the corresponding thread reaching Biblical proportions in this forum).

  • Can I upgrade from Mac OS X 10.0 directly to 10.4 on my iMac G3?

can i go from 10.0 directly to 10.4 on my G3, and will the install affect the 9.2 that coexists currently w/10.0? i have a hp inkjet working under 9.2 that i don't know will work w/10.4 and i would like to continue to have it available(i do have the mac install disc from hp which i believe will work w/osx).

You will need at least 256mb of RAM to run Mac OS X 10.4 (512mb or more is better). You'll also need sufficient free space on the hard drive. Be sure to install any required firmware before doing the update; I don't know your specific G3 iMac model, but here's a list.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
Going from 10.0 to 10.4, it may be better to use the "archive and install" option rather than upgrading the existing installation. This gives you a fresh Mac OS X 10.4 System, rather than updating the existing System. Existing data, including the 9.2 System Folder will be preserved. It should not affect your ability to restart from that Mac OS 9.2 System Folder.
As a precaution, you should do the following. Back up your critical data. When you start up from the 10.4 Installation Disk, at the first Installer screen, go up to the menu and run Disk Utility. Use both the Repair Permissions and Repair routines (First Aid tab) on the internal drive.

  • Can I upgrade from MAC OS 10.4.11 to 10.5?

I just bought a new printer that only has drivers for MAC OS 10.5 and above.  My MacBook Pro is currently using MAC OS X 10.4.11.  Can I upgrade to 10.5 or 10.6 from 10.4.11 and if so, how?

Hello, yes you can, assuming it meets these requirements, the $29 Snow Leopard/10.6 the cheapest...
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it!
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It looks like they might still have it...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

  • Can I upgrade to mac osx 10.8.5 on MacBook

Purchased MAC Book 2009 2.0 GHz, 2 GB 160 GB superdrive. Or do I need to purchase a new mac book?

You can upgrade from 10.6 straight to 10.9 with no problems as long as you have at least 4gb of RAM. Any program that runs under 10.6 should run under10.9.
Once you are at 10.6.8 Mavericks is still available from Apple. 100.9 Mavericks is a free download from the App Store.
Mavericks will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.9 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mavericks.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Upgrade from Mac OSX 10.4 to 10.5 + Canoscan Lide 30 Scanner + X11

I have just changed from PC to Mac (iBook G4). The iBook is already set up and workiing properly. Some questions for an inexperienced Mac user:
    1. Is it worthwhile changing to OSX 10.5? Will the personal setting be automatically updated or will it led to the inevitable Microsoft crashes?
    2. have downloaded drivers (*.dmg) for canoscan lide 30 and tried to install it. The scanner does not work. Which programmes do I need?
    3. How/where do I get the latest version of the X11 software for OpenOffice? The downloads from the internet cannot be installed because of the new versions of OSX 10.4.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Kindest reagrds

    1. Which iBook model do you have? You need a minimum of 867 mhz, 512MB of memory,
DVD drive for installation and 9GB of available disk space. Doing an upgrade should preserve your user settings. Is it worthwhile? Only you can answer that. Frankly I would stay with Tiger 10.4.11 with your machine.
    2. You may need to take that up with Canon.
3.Note 10.4 customers can install X11 by using the Tiger DVD installer disk. See here:
