Can I upgrade memory on Macbook Pro 13" 2.5GHz 4GB RAM, Model Z0MT7B/A

I have ordered a Macbook Pro from a retailer here in the UK. It ships with 4GB RAM but I know I will 8gb or possibly 16GB.
Does anyone know whether the memory is removable and changeable in this model, as it used to be in earlier Macbook Pro 13" models?

I'm pretty sure you can upgrade to 8, 12, or 16. As I'm looking on Other World Computing I'm seeing that for Macbook Pro's 13", 2012 - Current there are upgrades available in the sizes I mentioned. It stands to reason that the memory is changeable, seeing as how there are memory upgrades available and even videos to show you how to change the memory.

A Core Solo or Core Duo Mac can go to Mac OS X 10.6.8. A Core 2 Duo or better can go to Mac OS X 10.7.2.

It was Kingston memory (KVR1333D3SO/4G; the newer batches are the same part number but are marked by "4GR" following the slash in the number).  I did not buy a paired kit as it was not in stock; this may have contributed to the performance drop.
The metric in question was Xbench's Memory Test, specifically the System > Allocate number.  Before the upgrade, I routinely benchmarked between 2.5 and 2.9 Malloc/sec (or a score of 750-800).  After the Kingston memory upgrade, I never saw figures above 1.6 Malloc/sec (or a score of 420-450); roughly half of what I had seen prior to upgrading.
Since installing my OWC memory (which came in a package of two sticks), the performance is generally identical to the OEM (Hynix) across the board.
    Hope that helps/clarifies my observations.
That helps a lot. Thanks very much for clarifying that. Yes, Kingston Value RAM is definitely not the way to go, as it has not been tested for compatibility, nor designed for use in Macs. See my other posts in this thread.
Kington's KTA line, OTOH, is tested for compatibility with Mac systems, comes in matched sets, and is very reliable.
AFA Kingston RAM, bottom line for Mac users:
    KVR = bad
    KTA = good

  • Can i upgrade my 2006 macbook pro's graphics card?

I have a late 2006 MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro 2,1) and i would like to know whether or not i can upgrade the graphics card? If it is possible what are the restrictions? Thanks.

No. The GPU is soldered onto the logic board and cannot be replaced.
If you need to upgrade the machine, I'm afraid that the only solution is to purchase a new MacBook Pro.

What brand of RAM did you purchase?
Have you taken out the modules , cleaned the contacts and reinstalled them?
Have you tried the original RAM?
Have you run an Apple hardware Test?

  • LEOPARD 10.5.1 - Macbook Pro 15" 2.4GHz 4GB ram - crashing, doesn't wake up

I've 2.4GHz 15" Macbook Pro with 4GB RAM and latest 10.5.1 LEOPARD. I'm getting very upset about the LEOPARD as it's not stable at all compared to Tiger. I've frequent crashes, see photo below.
As described in other topics on this forum, i have simultaneous problem with the laptop not waking up from a sleep mode. The screen is black and the keybord and poer button is unresponsive. I have to hold he power button to FORCE-shut down the computer.
I've done clean LEOPARD installation, not an upgrade.
LEOPARD is getting a lot of unwanted attention with all it's flaws - just google for it.
I was imagining that apple is working hard on this problem, but over the time i'm getting tired of this and although i love the new features i need a stable system - that's why i have MAC and windows!

It looks/sounds to me as if you have a problem with the "Hall Effect" switch which activates sleep when the computer is closed, MarukoDT.
THis isn't actually in the hinge, but is activated by a magnet in the lid when the computer is closed.
"Sleep Cause 5" is certainly closing the lid on my MBP under OSX 10.6.2.
In fact you can reproduce symptoms very similar to yours by simply placing an MBP13 on top of an older Polycarbonate MacBook. If you do this then the magnet in the MacBook activates the Hall effect switch in the MBP13 even when the MBP13's lid is open. Simply moving the computer off the MB will immediately allow it to wake. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2917 for the Apple KB item on the matter. I've done this myself when sharing a power adaptor and was about to launch in to major "troubleshooting mode" when I remembered having read this article a few days earlier! )
So, assuming you don't have your MBP stacked on top of an MB, and don't work on top of of an MRI machine or other things with substantial magnets , I'd be thinking that it is a defective Hall Effect switch itself that is causing your woes. If so, it is a workshop warranty repair, I'm afraid.
(There are many other possible causes of sleep problems. Generally they involve issues with third party software or third party hardware, but your case is different. I no longer have the log files from my own accidental experiences of this when sitting the MBP on the MB, but from memory they actually looked very like yours.)
    Cheers
    Rod

  • 10.6, quicktime, and itunes on a macbook pro 2.53 w/ 4gb ram and ssd

    Hi,
I am experiencing something extremely weird, and extremely frustrating...
What I am experiencing is that after I've been using my system for a while, I will launch quicktime, and I will get the spinning ball forever.. If I launch iTunes it will just bounce on my dock forever and not launch.
Then I have to reboot, which is sometimes impossible to do, so I will have to manually tell my system to shutdown via the terminal.
When my mac reboots, everything is fine.. Quicktime launches, iTunes launches, happy world...
... So I thought it was perhaps something that I was doing (applications that I was running, websites I was visiting etc.), but now I have evidence that it's not. Which is even more confusing. Last night, a friend wanted me to pull up something on quicktime-- I got the spinning ball.. Said "ugh, I don't understand what is up with my system". Clicked restart.. It wouldn't restart.. lauched terminal.. sudo shutdown -h now... Ok.. it's off.. turn it on.. Launch quicktime.. hooray.. there's the video..
Ok-- That was the extent of me using my computer. I left it on after that for many hours.. and eventually closed the laptop.
In the morning, opened it up.. Clicked quicktime, and.. SPINNING BALL. Had to reboot.
so, the only thing I can think is that something is occurring inactivity, or sleep, something that is causing QT and iTunes to mess up... I tried doing various tests, but could not come up with anything. I tried just running my screensaver for a while, but quicktime still comes up no problem.
Very frustrating.. I want to know if anyone else is experiencing this, and if there are any suggestions for what I should do. I have zapped p-ram, I have repaired permissions...
    -patrick

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. That's a risk, and more in a MacBook Pro, that has got everything soldered except the hard drive and memory.
    2. If you want performance, buy a SSD. It will get the best performance but they are expensive, so you should consider the option to buy a SSD with a small capacity to store OS X and applications and an external disk for other data.
    3. SSDs are much better than hard disk drives because they haven't got mechanical parts. You will notice this difference in read and write tasks like a startup, that will be much faster. However, in other tasks, it doesn't mind if you have a HDD or a SSD, because performance depends on the processor and graphic card. Also, you will notice a difference with a 7200 rpm hard disk.
    4. You can take it to an Apple Store or reseller to see what they can do in order to repair your computer

  • Does MacBook Pro need more than 4gb ram to run osx lion?

Machine is mid 2009, 4gb ram, 2.26 ghz processor.   Since installing the operating system update and updates to iPhoto, most programs take a longer to load than originally.  I have plenty of hard drive space available for virtual memory.
I have priced up adding ram, but want to be sure before I spend the money.

I think it is safe to say, yes Lion requires more RAM to run and maintain the OS compared to your previous Snow Leopard or Tiger.  But still 2 GB of RAM is advertised as the minimum requirement.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4949
The new Mavericks does seem to manage memory better however the RAM requirement is the same.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5842
RAM is considered your best bang for the buck,  if you do decide to upgrade.

Snow Leopard is back on the online Apple Store, at least in some countries. In the US:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
If it's not listed on the web site of the Apple Store in your country, call the online Apple Store,; they may still have copies of Snow Leopard available .
If they no longer have it available, you'll need to look to private sellers, and the prices are rising quickly. If you buy from a private seller, make sure you get the retail disk set (white label with a picture of a Snow Leopard), not the system disks from another model of Mac (grey label).
Once you get the disk, install the OS and run Software Update to get to the latest version of 10.6 and iTunes. You should then be able to sync.
    Regards.

In general the later versions are more advanced. They tend to be faster because they pack more data into the same area, which means more data "swept" by the heads in a single revolution. They also tend towards more advanced electronics and better power management.
    7200 RPM is very possible.
S.M.A.R.T. status has some limited uses. There would be no reason why you would need to avoid it.
The one thing I think you probably want to avoid is any built-in antishock features. Some people have been having nothing but trouble since they conflict with Apple's Sudden Motion Sensor. It's possible to turn off the SMS, which would be OK if the drive already has its own system.
Once I get the drive can I just pop it in start comp with disc that came with macbook and fresh install then the apps disc. do I have to erase new drive? I have all my data on dvd discs.thanks
Apple calls it "erase", but it's really just a formatting. You have to format the drive (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) before you can install the OS. You might also try a multi-pass erase. I've heard that it can help with mapping out bad sectors.

  • I have new iMac with Lion installed; can I get a free upgrade for my MacBook Pro?

    Hello
I recently bought a 27" iMac with Lion installed.  Should I be able to download the upgrade for my MacBook Pro without paying.  If so what should I do.  If I go to the App Store I'll end up paying £20.99
    Any help gratefully received
    margaret

    Margaret,
No you will need to purchase the upgrade. However if you own other Macs you want to upgrade once you have purchased Lion then you can upgrade the additional machines. Of course the additional machines must be using the same Apple ID. As long as the additional machine's meet the minimum system requirements listed below you are all set.
    General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
