Can I upgrade my 13" MBP to have an SSD?

I have a mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro, and I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade this model to have an SSD?
If so, can anyone say whatever it is worth replacing the harddrive, or just ditching the optical drive and adding an SSD alongside the old HDD? Also, what SSD`s work, and are there any certain SSD`s I should consider getting?
Also, is it overal worth it? And while we are at it, what is the recommended amount of RAM?
Would love a small performance boost to this thing after seeing what an SSD is capable of, so can anyone with experience say whatever it is worth it?
Thanks

Yes, it's possible to install an SSD. It is also possible to install an SSD in the optical drive bay. Visit OWC to find SSDs as well as the DataDoubler to install the SSD as a replacement for the optical drive.
Maximum RAM for your model is 16 GBs. You find what you want and the cost, then you determine if you think the cost is justified for your needs.
For your model get an SSD that is compatible with SATA III - 6.0 Gb/s interface.

  • Can I upgrade to lion when i have a 2 GHz Intel core duo processor ( my computer is 6 years Old)  I have snow leopard now.

Can I Upgrade my computer to Lion.  I have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo Processor.  My computer is 6 years old.  Right now I have Snow Leopard.

I have an old iMac about that age that I upgraded to Lion to test my 3rd party applications for compatibility. It upgraded quite simply. Please backup or save all your info/etc to an external CD/DVD/Hard drive, then try to run the installer. The Lion installer will analize your Mac for compatibility before it does anything, and will alert you to it's decisision. My 17" iMac is also 2 GHZ Intel core duo. Surprisingly for many of the things I use it for it works as good as my multi thousand dollar MacPro workstation. Best of luck. But Lion isn't compatible with many third party applications and drivers for printers; scanners; etc.

  • Which HDD is good to get as an upgrade for a MBP that already has SSD?

I have a 2009 Macbook pro. I recently added a 256 Samsung 830 SSD and am delighted at the increase in speed and effectual results. I've installed my OS on the SSD, and have left my music, movies, and photos on the HDD.
I would now like to increase my HDD capacity to a 500 or 750 GB. Since I already have the SSD, I'm not too keen on the hybrid Seagate Momentus XT.
I've been researching over the past couple of weeks and find several old threads here where the Seagate Momentus 750GB 7200RPM 2.5" is held in high esteem. But then I also find posts from other users who insist otherwise and recommend a WD drive.
    Any thoughts?

I hate Western Digital - over my lifetime, I've had nothing but trouble with them.
A few people have had problems with the Seagate Momentus 750GB 7200rpm, but not enough to scare me away from them. I use two of them, in USB enclosures, for cloning my internal drive. Never had a problem - will likely be uprgading the enclosures soon to FW800.
I suggest going for it - we'll wait to see if any Seagate disaster stories surface...

  • I have a Mac Book Pro but it says it can't upgrade to Lion, do i have to buy a new computer? How can i upgrade? I want to be able to use iCloud on this computer too.

I have a 2GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro with Max OSX version 10.6.8
I would like to upgrade to Lion but it says I can't .
    So can I? how ?
I would like to be able to use iCloud on this computer too.
    Thanks

The minimum requirements require the intel core 2 duo processor.so I am sorry to say that you will need to update your mac if you want to run Lion and iCloud. Apple's http://www.apple.com/macosx/specs.html page for osx gives the minimum requirements.

  • Upgrading clients two MBP memory and to SSD

i am working with one of my clients who has two MBP 15" model identifier: 6.2 and 5.3 currently both have 4gig of memory and a 5400RPM drive in them.
i want to upgrade them to 8gig of memory which i believe is the max for those models, but not sure which brand of memory to upgrade them to. so i am looking for suggestions.
the same goes for the SSD upgrade. I am looking at a 256gb drive, most likely 6gb interface so if they decide to upgrade to a new mbp they can install it into that machine at a later date.
i have read that a lot of people are going with:
    Crucial M4
    Samsung 830 series
    Plextor M3
    Sandisk Extreme
i also found a link to this website: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Mercury_6G/
i wanted to get some feedback on these SSD and see which one you would recommend as well as the memory choices you recommend.
these clients are architects that require running windows as a vm to pump AutoCAD as well as improve overall system performance and functionality. sometimes its painful waiting for applications, menu's to open right now!
    thank you

Go with Crucial RAM - competitive price and top quality:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
RAM is especially important if you're switching between applications, or have lots of desktop pulldown menus.
Crucial M4 is fast and reliable; I have it installed on my MBP. The Samsung and Plextor are equally reliable and well received. Although these are very good quality, it's good to have a long warranty.

  • Can I use the Optibay solution to have an SSD+HDD in my 2008 Macbook (MB402) in place of HDD+CD/DVD?

As anyone might have imagined, I am planning to upgrade my 2008 Macbook (MB402). So I am thinking of upgrading the RAM from existing 2GB to 4GB and getting an SSD in place of the CD/DVD drive, which I have rarely used. I am just wondering if there are any issues related to Optibay or Macbay support for White non-unibody Macbooks of 2008 (MB402 specifically). Can somebody help?

    Hi
If you are happy with your current hdd, you might clone its entire content to the new msata SSD and then remove, resize partitions you don't need on both drives. And, finally, use msata SSD as bootable drive.
Somewhere on the forum I posted detailed instruction, can't find that now. If you want I'll try to search. But the cloning task isn't so difficult.
Note, Lenovo preload systems with win7 have 3 partitions. The 3rd partition - System_DRV - is a system, hidden one, includes Recovery Environment, is accessible from the Disk Manager.

Welcome to the Support Commuities. See under Supported Models here:
OS X Mountain Lion Technical Specifications
...Although your MacBook Pro is supported, it may be advisable to wait until OS X 10.8.1 or 10.8.2 in order to avoid the possibility that your Mac slows down due to bugs in 10.8.0.

  • Can I upgrade from IOS 5 to 6 still? Or have to go to 7?

I have a 4S with IOS 5.x on it still.  Can I upgrade to 6.1.3 (have the IPSW downloaded in Itunes)?  Or will Apple refuse it and force me to 7?

Just as a data point, I just upgraded my 4s to IOS7. The principle problem I had was that the Podcast app on IOS7 is really shakey. For me it killed itself after 10 seconds. They troubleshot it for me over the phone and it works now, but it's not hard to crash. Otherwise, it works well with good speed. Just in case you have to go to 7.
If you do, I would uninstall the podcast app, turn automatic update of podcasts from iTunes off, and if you're not already, use over the air podcast update. Then do the upgrade and then reinstall the Podcast App. Should work then. If not call Apple.

  • Can I upgrade to Mac OS X 10.8?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.7.5. When I check for updates I am informed that 10.7.5 is the latest version for this Mac. However, I would like to download an App (Clear) that requires OS X 10.8.
Can I download the App to 10.7.5? If not, is there a way to upgrade my OS X to 10.8?

You can certainly upgrade your 2011 MBP to Mountain Lion.
I do not know what it is about Clear that requires Mountain Lion but it says it does. I assume they have a reason for this requirement.

  • Can you upgrade the RAM on a Retina Display Macbook Pro?

So I've been looking around for information on whether the RAM on a Retina Macbook Pro can be upgraded and the mixed messages have left me confused. If I take my Macbook Pro (Retina Display) to an Apple store for a RAM upgrade and offer to pay them for the RAM and installation, would they do it for me?
Thanks and if you can't, please explain why.
I am aware that the RAM is soldered into the motherboard making it very difficult to perform the upgrade, but will some stores actually do it for you?

The MacBook Pro with Retina display is soldered onto the logic board, so RAM can't be added without replacing the logic board.
I know there are shops that may try to add more RAM without replacing the logic board, but they aren't official resellers and if something happens, the warranty will be voided. Apple won't do it.
If you want, you can sell your MacBook Pro and get another one with more RAM. It's the best way to do it, because I don't think you want to spend a lot of money replacing the logic board or you want to take it to a non-official technical support, putting the Mac in risk

  • Can't Upgrade iPad to 4.2

I have been notified that I can now upgrade my iPad. I have tried about 5 times. First, I get a message that says I have rentals on my iPad that I will lose, but I don't have any rentals. Then it spends an hour updating and when it is nearly done I get an error that says the upgrade didn't happen because it lost network connection (not on my end), error -3259.
Is this a known issue? I have no trouble synching the iPad, and I synched it before I started.
    Thanks.

I have had exactly the same experience, which happens only with the 4.2 installation file, but never with other iStore downloads.
The download reaches 100% and moves to "processing file" before terminating with this 'network timeout -3259' error message. Given that other actions with iStore complete successfully, I can only imagine it's related to the type of file, and I cannot find any Antivirus or Firewall settings to allow it thru because nobody at iStore support can tell me what's different about this file.
For the moment I've made an appointment at the local Apple store but am hoping for a solution that will allow me to cancel that!

Hi - I have an older MacBook Pro (osx 10.4.11. Can I upgrade it so it will run snowleopard?

    All MBPs up to and including the 2011 models can run Snow Leopard.  You will have to purchase a disk from the Apple online store;
