Can I upgrade my 2.4 iMac's HD (1st Aluminum gen) to a 1TB?

Hello,
I have a 20" 2.4GHz iMac (first generation of the Aluminum series) with a pre-installed 320GB hard disk. I'd like to upgrade it to a 1TB. Is that possible? Would my machine run a 1TB or is my maximum a 500GB?
I need to purchase the Hard disk separately because it is not available in my country. So what exactly are the recommended specs and brands that will be fully compatible with my iMac? And what is the maximum size I can go for?
Thank you,
Carol

You can go for 1.5TB if you really wanted to (kind of grey, since some PC's cant support 1.5tb properly). Pretty much any SATA 3.5 inch hard drive will work. The ones you want would be SATA or SATAII or SATA2 or SATA 3.0 (which are all the same, most companies will just call it a SATA drive. the 2/II just represents the generation of SATA which reads at 3gbps or something like that, hence the 3.0, but you dont have to worry about it, just get a SATA and it will work).
For the 1TB lineup, I chose the Samsung Spinpoint series because it had the fastest read times compared to the rest of drives from seagate etc ect. Just make sure the hard drive is initialized before you go and install it into your imac. I did this by initializing it from my PC before sticking it in. Im not sure if you can initialize the harddrive while installing OS X, so i didnt take that chance. (Taking it apart waskind of a hassle).
It reads everything fine at 1TB, you can get a OEM harddrive (without any cables or mounting brackets) because everything you need, you can just take from your harddrive already in there. Look online for step by steps of how to open the aluminum imac. youll need non-magnetized screwdrivers and a bunch of suctioncups to remove the plexiglassish cover.
I would personally recommend the Samsung Spinpoints, i have 4 of them in 3 of my computers and none of them arrived dead or are having any defects. They go for about 120-150$ canadian, or about 70-130$ american. Ill admit ignorance, and say i dont know what currency Egypt uses. :P
Remember though that theres only space for 1 3.5 inch desktop hard drive in there.

  • Can i upgrade the gpu of imac 21 2012late?

Hi guys i have iMac 21inch  2012 late (that with very slim edges)
It has i5 2,7GHz and gt640m vith 512mb of vram.
Im teen and im playing all those modern dx11 games (ive bootcamped it on win7 64bit)
For example i can run bf3 full HD on almost everything medium but next gen game like assassins creed4 i can run 900p lowest on 30fps with lags
that 30 fps wont be problem but those lags every1 second
I want better gpu but not that gt750m that nothing for me i want to fill it up with gtx 970m or 980m
Last year i saw 27inch one with gtx 780m so is it possile to have this kinda gpus in 21 inch
Will the power supply be OK or i must hvae better powersupply
Can i wire in somehow better powersupply?
can i wire in gtx 970 or980 deskyop versions to my imac via thunderbolt I/O port with that 100pound box

The graphics processor is soldered on the logic board and is not upgradeable.  To do so would require desoldering the GPU and replace it with another, assuming the pins of the two match perfectly.

  • Can I upgrade video card in iMac

I would like to have a better video card to play some games. Is this upgradable by user on my iMac? this is a 24 inch iMac bought in 2010 (I think).

Only official user-upgradeable components for that machine are hard drive and RAM.
If you search Google you will find walkthroughs for upgrading the hard drive, processor, video card, etc. in some models, but you will void any future support from Apple for the machine.
EDIT: Correction, RAM is the only user-upgradeable component for that model.

  • Can i upgrade the OS on my iPod Touch 1st generation so i can use wifi and apps?

i recenlty cracked the screen on my iPod and my son gave me an older one of his, which i think is a 1st Gen.  there is no access to the internet capabilities and therefore no apps.  would downloading the more recent firmware allow me to use the iPod the way I'm used to? i miss mail, facebook and texting capabilities of my other device.

    Here it is
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2052
The page has a link that directs you to a page you have to open iTunes. The iTunes link then directs you to download the update directly into your iT account and from there you plug in your ipt and wait while it does the update.
    Hope this helps.
If, for some reason the link doesn't show up, I found it by Googling "ipod 3.1.3" and clicked on a link called "
OS 3.0 for 1st gen iPod Touch - 23 Feb 2011" then followed their advice...

Install more RAM in the computer; the Mac needs to have at least 2GB of RAM and should have 4GB or more first.

You need a newer 2011 or later iMac to use Airplay.
    Sorry.
For older Mac, look at an app called AirParrot

I have an iMac purchased new about 5 years ago with OS 10.4.11. I would like to upgrade to Lion. I currently have a 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 GB of ram. Can I upgrade to Lion, and what is the best way to do so?

    From what I read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/06/lion-...u-2-gb-of-ram/
s long as they already have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed in it.All a person needs to do with that type of iMac is to upgrade/max out their Ram. They claim that an Interl iMac with Core 2 Duo is all that is needed, as long as it has OS 10.6.8 installed. They say you don`t need  the "Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor"
But I wonder about the RAM speed, the iMac 2.33Ghz uses DDR2 SDRAM,  which I believe is rated at 667Mhz. Lion maybe installed but it might be problems running smoothly or not?
Did some quick checking and the iMacs apple is selling this year use 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
The only thing to do is to make sure you have a good back-up, Install your RAM and install Snow Leo, then wait a couple of hours and install Lion.
    Good Luck

I can not upgrade from version 9.1.5 to 9.2.3 on my IMAC free?? I have to pay for this upgrade?

That is a free update (not an upgrade) what happens when you try? How are you trying to update? did your Mac come with restore disks or did you download software form teh App Store? Have you logged onto the App store and checked purchased software for updates?

  • How can i upgrade from iphoto 7.1.5 to 8.1.2 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8 ?

How can I upgrade from iphoto 7.1.5 to 8.1.2 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8 ?

With the above listed config that I have (iphoto 7.1.5 on an older iMac running OSX 10.6.8), how can I move my iPhoto library from this old iMac (2006) to my NEW iMac (2011) that is running iPhoto 9.5.1 ?
To open an iPhoto 7.1.x version in iPhoto '11 you need to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader. See this Support document:
iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrade
Download and install the upgrader,  then run it on your iPhoto 7.1.5 library. After that, iPhoto will be able to open your library and upgrade it to version 9.5.1. And you will be able to merge the libraries with if Library Manager.

  • What hard drive can I upgrade with on iMac intel early 2010

what hard drive can I upgrade with on iMac intel 27 inches early 2010

You can install any 3'5" SATA hard drive on a Late 2009 iMac. Have a look at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/hard_drives_and_SSD
Note that Late 2009 and later iMacs have got the temperature sensor inside the hard drive. If you install a hard drive without a sensor, fans won't work correctly. Read > http://blog.macsales.com/2751-proprietary-cable-can-put-the-brakes-on-upgrading- late-09-imacs

  • What is the newest operating system I can upgrade to with an IMAC (maximum 4gb memory) purchased in late 2007

I have an IMAC (purchased in late 2007) that has been upgraded to the maximum memory of 4GB.   Current operating system is 10.6.8.
How much farther can I upgrade the operating system?

The IMAC was upgraded by a local computer service store because we have dial up.  The person who did the upgrade said I couldn't upgrade any further because the IMAC would run to slow.  Here is what I have now.
      Model Name: iMac
      Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 4 MB
      Memory: 4 GB
      Bus Speed: 800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
      SMC Version (system): 1.20f4
      Serial Number (system): W87482Y9X88
      Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-001B63BE8AEA
Any thoughts on realistic upgrade potential?  I need to do something as my current Safari version (5.1.10)  is not working properly on some important web sites.
    Thanks!

  • Hi there, I've upgraded my Snow Leopard iMac to Yosemite 10.10.1 and would like to install windows 8.1, but bootcamp keeps telling me my mac only supports windows 7. Is there a way I can change that, please?

Hi there, I've upgraded my Snow Leopard iMac to Yosemite 10.10.1 and I would like to install Windows 8.1 using bootcamp. However, there's a pop-up saying that my Mac is only supporting Windows 7. Is there a way to change that, please? Thanks

Please find your Mac Model Identifier from About This Mac -> (More Info) -> System Report -> Hardware and compare it to the following list. If your model identifier appears in this list, you can only install Windows 7.
