You can look here to see if they have anything available for your model, but be advised even opening a Retina voids the warranty.

If money is no object, OWC will swap 2010 or 2012 Processor shelves for whatever you want as long as you have a working Mac Pro 5,1 shelf to swap and a ton of money.

The basic charge is US$949 starting from the 2.8 Quad.
    • to move up to the 3.33 hex add US$550 to the base price for a total of about US$1500.
    • to move to dual Quads or dual hex ADD $1470 to $4250 to the base price.

Can a 27" iMac late 2012 be used as a target monitor (screen) for a Raspberry Pi ?
If yes, please describe how it can be done?
    Thanks

Nope, you are describling Target Display Mode. Please read Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) and you will see the other device (in your case a Raspberry Pi) has to have a Thunderbolt port that supports TDM.

  • Windows 8 Pro to 8.1 Upgrade on Late 2012 iMac

    Hey all,
Just wanted to report some good news to those of you watching and waiting.
I have a late 2012 27 inch iMac with a 3TB Fusion drive running Windows 8 Pro via bootcamp.  Given the saga earlier this year of a) waiting for BootCamp support on 3TB fusion drive, and b) getting a Win 8 Pro installation to work in the first place, I was very hesitant to download and run the free upgrade to Win 8.1 Pro from the app store within Win 8.  After some internal wrangling, I took a few precautionary steps, namely, downloading a fresh copy of the Bootcamp Windows Support software for my iMac (nothing had changed sincie the initial version I downloaded Jan 2013), and then I used the phenomenal Winclone software from TwoCanoes to create a backup image of my entire 300GB Bootcamp partiton.  Then, I grtted my teeth, rebooted into Win 8 Pro, and ran the free Win 8.1 download & upgrade from the windows app store ...
    It worked.
No hassle, no issues whatsoever .. all my precautions were for naught. The upgrade process rebooted my iMac a few times .. always with reassuring progress windows to let me know nothing was hanging ... updated my configuration and voila, welcome to Win 8.1 Pro.  I'd even left my Wacom Intous 4 plugged in rather than an Apple mouse, and my bluetooth keyboard ... all worked during setup, and my apps in Win 8.1 are running great.

There were news reports the first day of glitches, slow downloads, even people on PCs with over two decades of experience and know their way around from Windows 1.0 days, that had trouble. In one case, because they were a columnist they got a call, MS did a remote login to rectify the computer problems, and got it installed.
Even installing Windows 8 as you mentioned, or a Windows Update, can cause mischief.
Unless the Windows update looks to and uses a driver disk (Apple, Boot Camp drivers) I don't know that there is anything. Maybe a clean custom install but no one wants to.
It is foolsh to not have backups regardless if you do not have issues, even with Mac OS install (and 10.8 or 10.9 or any other).
On my PC it was the easiest ever. Took 1/2 hour at most to download, there were 4? restarts as devices and settings and other changes even after the first major installed reboot. And all my programs and settings were there only had to uninstall and reinstall an MS Mouse/keyboard driver for some odd reason.
For security, people have been saying "only need Windows Security ESsentials" isn't really true even from horse's mouth but I assume like Kaspersky that they may not be 100% compatible with 8.1 or parts of their suites and plug-ins.

  • Highest resolution for external display for late 2012 retina?

I have a 15" late 2012 MBP with retina display.  I'd like to get an external monitor but I'm not sure about the highest resolution for an external display this Mac will support.  It looks like the 4K displays with only work with later models.  So what are you using and how do you like it?
    Thanks
    Amy

Yes, the 2012 MBP w/ Retina Display will support an external 4K display (using the Thunderbolt/mini display port)

  • How can I upgrade Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials?

I have just installed Windows Server 2012 Essentials on my Home Network (from the installation DVD).  I have done absolutely no  configuration  Installing Server 2012 was an oversight;  I meant to install Server 2012 R2 Essentials.
I tried to correct by installing R2 from its DVD, hoping it would do an upgrade.  That didn't work.
Is there a simple way to make it possible to install the correct OS?   For example, can I just demote the existing server and remove any roles that were installed, so that the R2 disk will install over top of the existing installation?
Alternatively, is it safe to just reformat the partition and install R2?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn408635.aspx seems to imply that this is OK.
    David Pike, P.Eng, MCITP

Hi Larry.   Thanks for the reply.  It didn't work, but I don't believe you are wrong.  Rather I think there is something weird in my system.  I'm marking your reply as answer.
Some background:  I'm repurposing an older PC (Compaq SR1614X) as a home server, to manage my home network, use as a gateway to my Azure server, and to help my Server 2012 training (on MVA).  I've been messing with it for nearly two months,
on and off.  From the start, I've had trouble installing the server 2012 software (see previous threads August-27 and August-16
), but when I got to the point that I could install Server 2012 Essentials, I thought I could upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Essentials exactly as you suggest.  That was where you helped me a lot, i.e. you confirmed that my expectations were reasonable.
So when it didn't work, I spent most of yesterday trying various different procedures.   I got tantalizingly close, but still no cigar.
I can install any Windows Client and Server 2012 Essentials, but the R2 Essentials installation never finishes; it goes into an "error 0x000000C4" boot loop.  At first I wondered if it was because I was installing a server over a
server, but you confirmed that's not the issue.  I later verified that I cannot install R2 over Windows 7 either, whereas R1 over Win7 is fine.  I can only surmise one of two problems:
I have a bad installation disk
    There is a hardware issue
I plan to eliminate (1) by creating a new disk from a new download.  I have verified that the latest ISO file and the one I have been using have identical byte counts,
For (2), I had suspected that the problem was that the older system has no UEFI, but since R1 installs OK, I am discounting that.  Today's effort:  to eliminate the DVD drive, I will try booting from a Flash Drive.  To eliminate
the hard drive, I will try installing to a different drive.
I am hoping you can help with one more thing.  When I run setup.exe with the /noreboot option, I have a better chance of success.  The option suppresses the first reboot only, but that one (after "Expanding the setup files") always
fails, so suppressing it gets me almost to the end of the install.  Is there a way to modify setup.exe so the it always runs with the /noreboot option?

  • Can I connect my late-2012 iMac to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro?

I've just bought a new late 2012 27" iMac and also have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro.
I also purchased a Thunderbolt cable, is there anyway I can use this to connect the two? If not... do I have any options for file sharing between the two?

The Thunderbolt cable is useless to connect both Macs. Mid 2010 MacBooks Pro have got Mini DisplayPort, and Mini DisplayPort isn't compatible with Thunderbolt.
If you want to use Target Disk Mode in order to connect both Macs, you have to buy two things: the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, and a FireWire cable to connect the adapter and the MacBook. You have to connect the Thunderbolt adapter to the Thunderbolt port of the iMac.
Then, if you want to transfer old files from the backup, you can use Migration Assistant if you want to migrate applications and user accounts (if you haven't set up the iMac, use Setup Assistant. If you want to transfer individual files, use Target Disk Mode

  • Can i upgrade my macbook pro retina internal storage

    Hi,
My macbook pro retina came with 128gb internal storage, but i got a gopro recently and the videos take up loads of storage! Can i upgrade the internal storgae or do i have to get an external hard drive to store it on?
    Thanks

But you will void your warranty if you still have one.
An external drive is a good, and cheaper option.

  • 2012 Retina MBP IR function/option missing

I would like to use my Apple TV remote with my Retina MBP.  However, there is no option to enable or disable the IR under System Prefs.  Does the 2012 MBP not have IR?  If it does, where do I turn it on?

  • My Late 2013 Retina MBP had a Kernel Panic - not sure what the source is.

I have a recently-purchased Macbook Pro (late 2013, Retina, 13", 8GB RAM, 2.4 GB i5) that just had a kernel panic this afternoon. This is the first time I've had a kernel panic on this computer, so I don't know what the cause is. It's claiming that 'kextd' is the related process, but I don't remember having installed anything recently that would have a kernel extension attached to it. Maybe one of you might know what it's related to?

  • Mid 2012 retina MBP keeps shutting down

Hello, my mid 2012 retina macbookpro is being annoying, it keeps turning off at random times, I read some other people have been experiencing the same frustration
Do you happen to know what may be the problem and if there's a solution I should try before turning it in on warranty (I need it for work)...
    Thanks,
    Kots88

    And this is the log:

I just got my new Retina MBP and have wrist pain from an hour of surfing.  I think the trackpad location so close to the edge of the laptop and the sharp edges near the inset area/"latch" have me contorting my wrist.  This is new pain, especially compared to my 2007 MBP, which had a good inch between the edge of the laptop and the trackpad edge.  Is anyone else experiencing this pain?  Other than buying a different trackpad and lugging that everywhere with me, are there other solutions? It's bad enough to have me consider returning it and sticking to my 2007 MBP.

The trackpad and location are pretty much the same on the 2011 and both Retina and non-Retina machines. I had a 2006 that I sold for a 2011 and it took me some time to become accustomed to the new arrangement - not any pain to speak of. I'm sure that if you'll just adjust your hands to take advantage of the new layout you'll have no problems.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
