I have an iMac purchased mid 2006 with operating system 10.4.11. I don't think I have enough memory for the upgrade (only 512 MB) and I can't seem to find it on line? can anyone help?

According to that, you can go to a total of 2 GB which I would recommend (1 GB will not be enough):

I wanted to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard and bought a retail 10.6 Snow Leopard install disc MC223Z/A. on the box. 2Z691-6428-A on the disc.
It would not let me install it unless I erased and partitioned the destination disc thus losing my settings and preferences like the old Archive and Install as it suggested in the article mentioned below..

I presume now that the article was written for upgrading from Leopard and not Tiger.

i have a macbook that runs 10.4.11. and this happened like last yr i think. i was going to upgrade it to snow leopard, and so i went to the store and bought the mac box set, the one costs $196. and here comes the trouble, no matter what i did, it couldn't be properly upgraded. like when it shows the window that says it is upgrading, it just tell you some errors occurred and then it couldn't proceed. so ever since i just continued using 10.4.11.
now i kind want to upgrade it again but im afraid that sth wrong is gonna happen again. so what should i do?? (b4 i upgraded, i erased everything in my mac, but still...)
the funny thing is, once i actually brought my macbook into the store and tried to upgrade in front f the technician, and it failed. later on they told me that i need to increase its memory from 1GB to 2GB, and i did so. but still........T.T

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.

Report any errors it has.
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

I have a MacBook Pro that came with OS X 10.5.8 installed. It also came with a disc containing Snow Leopard. I never got around to installing it until now, because I'd like to upgrade to Lion.
When I try to install Snow Leopard, I get a yellow triangle with this message: Mac OS X Snow Leopard cannot be installed on this computer.
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB RAM and plenty of available disc space. Any idea why it won't install?

Start up from your Mac OS X Install Disc 1 or Install DVD. If you have different versions of Mac OS X Installer discs (for example, if your computer came with version 10.3 and you later purchased and installed version 10.4), start from the disc that most closely matches the installed Mac OS X version. Usually, that's the latest (newer) version.
Usually, you can start from the disc by putting it in your computer, restarting, and holding the C key. Or, put it in the computer and click the Install or Restore icon you see in the disc's main window (after which the computer will start from the disc without you needing to hold C.)
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.

Restart with the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD in the drive or with the Lion USB drive connected, hold down the Option key just after the restart, tab to the installation disk, and press Enter. If the computer has a firmware password set, it needs to be provided for this to work.

You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.8 Mountain Lion without going through 10.7 Lion with the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody. The Model 5,1 will probably run 10.9 Mavricks when it comes out.
10.8 Mountain Lion is a download from the App Store, the price is $19.99.
Mountain Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.

Also Mountain Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. It has never been on the MAS. It's never been a download anywhere (except, maybe, as a pirated version on a torrent, which, along with being "free," will probably bring along some nice malware.) It has always been a DVD, which may be possible to obtain by calling Apple and asking for Phone Sales. Should stlll only be $29.

No problem, provided you have at least 1GB of memory (RAM), you can upgrade to Snow Leopard without difficulty.

A standard installation of SL will only replace the system files, leaving all your data and preferences intact.
But! Things have been known to go wrong, so I strongly advise backing up your current system to an external HD with the Restore function in Disk Utility before starting the installation.

Upgrade to Snow Leopard from Tiger - Front Row wont respond to remote?

I have recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I thought I'd better get with it!.
I use front row a fair amount as the iMac is used for multimedia mostly.
However, the computer doesn't respond when I press the menu button on the remote, even when I get really close.
I have check the security settings but they are almost all shaded out. The remote is not paired and the setting state that any remote can be used. However, when the security pane is open the menu button works and opens front row?
It might be irrelevant but I use eye diversity with a remote. I also have B&W speakers with a remote. However, it all worked fine on Tiger.
Having to go onto the iMac to open Front Row sort of spoils the point of having a remote.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Thanks for your input. It seems obvious. Obviously one of those Mac things I hadn't picked up on yet.
Unfortunately the remote still wouldn't pair. I pressed next and menu for ages as instructed but nothing?
I have messed around a bit more and it appears that Front Row works when I quit Eye Diversity TV. The iMac appears slow to open applications with Snow Leopard compared to Tiger, especially after waking. Do you know whether this is normal?
I'll try and raise the issue with EyeTV but clearly something odd is going on. I read a comment that it was best to format the iMac before installing Snow Leopard. I'm just a bit worried about losing the data and programmes I already have on the iMac.

Ideal is to pick up a new drive and leave your system as is and do a clean install and let Setup Assistant merge your old system files.
You may be using the original ATI 2600XT it shipped with? I would replace it with Apple's ATI 5770.
Also plan to start with a new TimeMachine backup set and leave the old one as is, you can reuse it later.
4GB is 'fine' but also is on the "I would not want to run with less" department.
What will make your Mac run faster and smoother is a small SSD boot drive, Samsung 840 128GB.

For now Snow Leopard is still supported but Apple wants to move as many users and systems as possible to 10.9 Maverick, free upgrade from Snow Leopard. But a major overhaul and doing so 10.7 and later dropped support for older applications.

Word 2004 is almost 10 years old, you will not be able to upgrade beyond Snow Leopard with it. IMHO you have gotten your money's worth out of the application and need to upgrade to Office for Mac 2011, this will work just fine and read your old files just fine too. What will not run beyond SL are all PowerPC (PPC) apps such as Word 2004. You will need to update, upgrade or replace any PPC based apps you want to use. I would recommend taking a little time and check for updates to each of your apps. Then open System Profiler (Applications - Utilities - System Profiler) click the Applications link on the left and then look for any PPC based apps, those are the ones that will not run. You can upgrade to SL just fine with the apps you currently have however if you want to go beyond SL (it's already 2 generations behind) you will need to update or upgrade your apps. You can take your time doing it but eventually you're going to have to begin

Hi, you need 10.6.8 first...
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.

Can I restore to Snow Leopard from Lion using time machine? I did not make a new partition on my external HD. My reason for doing this is to import data from Quicken 2007 to Quicken Essentials and then upgrade back to Lion. Can I restart and hold down the "OPTION" key upon start up that will take me to Apple Recovery HD and recover from time machine? I'm a noob at these sort of things. I appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Can't upgrade to snow leopard

Weird problem. I"m finally taking the plunge to upgrade to Snow Leopard from 10.5.8. Ran the installer, it spent ten minutes copying files. Rebooted and... Nothing. Still in 10.5.8.
There's now a folder on my hard drive named "Mac OS X Install Data" but nothing installs on reboot. Any ideas?

Try holding down the C key while the mac is booting up. That will get you to the install disk to either run disk utilities or retry the installation. I recommend you back up whatever you don't want to lose before having another crack at the upgrade.
