Can I use 2 hard drives with my itunes/ipod ?

Hi
I have my itunes/ipod set up on my pc which is fine.
I have a spare hard drive built in my pc which I want to put my itunes/ipod on to in addition to the existing hard drive.( as a back up )
Can I set up itunes on the second hard drive and import my existing itunes so I then have a back up should my first hard drive crash.
I would then want to contimue to use my existing hard drive with my ipod.
I would then look to ad cd's and transsfer as I build up library.

The choice is yours, if you find your accessing them often and your machine is stationary, then leave them connected.
If you move your machine around a lot, then you'll likely only want to connect them as you need too.
You don't want to wear out your port connectors, but then again you don't want to carry a hard drive connected to a machine as your moving it neither, more chance for a dropping to occur.
You'll have to make the best decision for your particular lifestyle, needs and use of the computer.
TimeMachine drive should be connected more often if your prone to accidentially deleting files so it's constantly updated, else perhaps every couple of days or only when you create new files will be plenty.
If your not using the drive, you shouldn't be firing it up. but then again you do need to run it once in awhile and not let it sit and get stuck neither.
Once a hard drive spins down and is properly dismounted (drag it's icon to the Trash can) the read/write heads park themselves in a safe spot so they can't strike the platters with your data on them, so it's important that when a hard drive is running to make sure it's (or the computer) is stationary and stable.
Many people move their laptops while it's on,  unaware of the dangers they are poentially causing.

  • U410 ultrabook: Can I defrag hard drive with SSD cache?

    Hi,
I would like to know if I can defrag my hard drive with 24G SSD cache. I heard that it would be bad to defrag the SSD part so I would like to defrag the regular hard drive portion only (1TB). I right clicked the drive but I see four drives and can't tell which one I should defrag. It looks like the first c drive is the one, but I am not sure. Any comments would be helpful. Thanks.

You are right that by default, drives are set to be defragged automatically. But you can also do it manually and when the date of the task is not yet due.
Re ssd, are there permanent files in that drive? By permanent, I mean data, programs, etc.. Not the temporary files used by runned programs and the system using the caching process.

  • How can I use an iPad with two itunes accounts?

How can I use an iPad with two itunes accounts?
    Hi there
My partner has a works iPad, which has her works Apps on (ones that are specifically made by her company and are NOT available in the App store).
What I want to be able to do is to ALSO have my itunes account on there so that I can put all the apps I have purchased previously from my iPhone on it.
This is so I can put on VLC player (thats already in my itunes account) so I can add videos to the iPad.
How do I do this please?
I tried it before by connecting it to my mac, but it wiped everything off the iPad completely and also deleted the data settings for using 3G.
So I want to avoid this happening again the future as it had to be sent back to her head office to be sorted again.
    Any advise please?
    Thanks

You can't. The iPad is desgined to be a 'one user' device and only really works with one apple ID at a time.
The only way would be if she, at work and with her work apple id, downloaded your apps (repurchasing them of course).
It's not meant to be a multiple user/multiple ID device.

    Hi @Leys
I see you are stilll unsuccessful installing the drivers as you get the blue screen.
Here is a link to Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP) that may help.

If the graphic card fails, here is a link to the HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide. Please note page 9 or chapter 1 page 9 for a list of recommended replacement graphic cards.
If the graphic card passes you may wish to consider doing a restore back to a known good time or a full recovery back to factory.

  • Details needed for using two hard drives with one iTunes library

I posted this under the iTunes section but now that I think of it, it's more of an Apple TV question since I'm only concerned about how it affects my 2 ATVs.
I have a MacMini(G4) that acts as a media server for our 2 ATVs. I use one library on the Mini which has been using an external 750GB drive. However, I'm at nearly 95% capacity now and want to invest in another external drive and use both. So the question I posted on the iTunes section was...
"With far too much content in iTunes (mostly for the Apple TVs) and after reading numerous posts about using external hard drives with iTunes I'm convinced that using two external drives is my best solution.
However, I did want to understand a bit more about the details of how iTunes will manage or at least keep track of, the media. Specifically, I'm thinking of the case were I add a movie to iTunes library (of course it will not copy the file into the iTunes folder).
What will occur if I later change any of the tags for the movie (e.g., name, genre, year, etc.). Will iTunes update this information and then update the Apple TVs once they resync with the iTunes library?"
So for the very knowledgeable folks here on the ATV section, what exactly does iTunes do in this case? Will my genres be updated correctly if I change something even though the content is not copied to the iTunes folder?

If you want to use two external drives to store your itunes content, there are a couple of ways you could go about it.
You could choose to have just movies (for example) on one HDD and everything else on the other. You could further choose to have your itunes music folder on one HDD and have all content copied to it by default. When it comes to movies (in this example) you can place these on your second HDD and add them to itunes by using OPT-drag, which will temporarily disable itunes from copying the file to your itunes library.
You could also entirely disable disable itunes copying files to your itunes music folder from the itunes preferences and manually manage all your content.
Personally I'd just buy a 2 TB (for example) drive and ebay your old drive once you have moved everything from it to your new one.

  • Can i use external drive with pc and mac??? files be recognised by both??

    hi
i have two external hard drives, with stuff from my pc on them.
can i plug them into my macbook? and just copy files?
    usb hard drives.
one i think is one or the other, mac or pc, not both at same time, unless i partition and format i think. maybe the other one too.
i have a 8gb file on my pc, im trying to get into my macbook.
    how can i???
i have a 160gb ipod, its only 30gb full, and pc says not enough space on it.
why is this???? the file is only 8gb......and theres over 100gb free on my ipod.
    anyone help?
    cheers

If your iPod is formatted FAT32 there is a 4 GB file size limit. Obviously an 8 GB file exceeds the limit.
In order to use any drive on both a Mac and a PC with full read/write capability the drive must be formatted MS-DOS (FAT16 or FAT32.) A drive formatted NTFS is read-only on a Mac unless you use third-party software such as MacFuse with NTFS-3G or Paragon NTFS.

  • My computer was totally destroyed & I do not have backup or external hard drive with my iTunes library. Will I be able to access my iTunes library when I purchase a new computer? It was the only computer authorized to play library.

My computer was totally destroyed & I do not have backup or external hard drive with my saved iTunes library from it. That was the only computer authorized to play library. I do not have an iPod or iPhone with any of that library (which has over $2K in music purchases & over 5K in songs I ripped). Will I be able to access my iTunes library when I purchase a new computer?

You should be able to access your past iTunes purchases. You'll need to re-rip your CDs See: HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.
See also this backup tip so you don't get caught out again.

Hello all, I own a desktop computer, and just recently bought my first laptop. I have iTunes already installed and my iPod synced on the desktop. Now I just installed iTunes on the laptop, and want to sync the iPod on the laptop also, so I can have two computers synced with the same iPod. Can that be done? Any info is greatly appeciated, thank you.

    what Niel said is correct.
however, there might be a (semi) workaround. check this thread for pointers: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11524444#11524444.

  • How can I use 300 GB of music on my external hard drive with my itunes on ipad?

I have 300 GB of music on my external hard drive. I use an ipod touch and want to to use an ipad to manage and make playlists and transfer to my touch. What is the best way for me to do this?? Thanks in advance.

It doesn't appear so.  I am shopping around now and the latest review I read says that there is an interface built into the product to manage media.

  • Can't use hard drive after replacing with new one

Disk Utility showed failed hard drive so a new Seagate ATA-100 160G was installed. I did the Erase and Journaling of the new HD. I went back to the installer to install OS10.3 and the HD now shows in the window for the destination volume. The problem is it shows an explamation point over the HD icon and if you select it the window says cannot install OSX on this volume. I placed the jumpers on the new HD exactly as the old HD had them.
    What am I doing wrong?

I placed the jumpers on the new HD exactly as the old HD had them.
Jumpers vary by manufacturer and model. If you copied the jumper positions, and not their meanings, it will not work.
You need to place the jumpers to set the drive to Master, but use the diagram on the new drive (not the jumpers on the old drive) as your reference.
I apologize in advance if you have, in fact, copied the sense of the jumpers rather than their positions.

  • Can I replace hard drive with Time Machine backup?

I couldn't phrase this right to see if some already asked. I have MacBook with a 250gb HDD and I have a new 500gb HDD. I bought a USB Hard Drive enclosure and have been backing up with Time Machine. So my question is, can I take out my 250gb HDD and put in my Time Machine Backed Up 500gb, and boot up like normal? Or are there some steps I need to do?

No, you cannot do what you've asked.
What you can do is this.
    1) using your install DVDs or an install USB, install OSX on the external 500GB drive.   When setup assistant starts, point it to your 250GB drive so all your settings and files get migrated over.
    2) now you can swap drives and it should work.  Have your install USB handy incase something goes wrong.  Put the 250GB drive in your external enclosure so you can access it if needed for a reinstall.
    good luck

  • Can I switch Hard Drive Mappings for ITUNES and NOT Re-sync Apple TV?

I am running out of space on my PC with Itunes. Is there a way that I can add more hard disk space on the PC without having to RE-SYNC everything to the Apple TV, once it knows that I changed drives?
What I would like to do is to add an external drive (1 Terrabyte), and move all the movies, pictures, songs, to the new drive WITHOUT having to re-synce everything to the APPLE TV.
    Appreciate any suggestions?

This should work, but I can't guarantee you won't need to resync:
