Can I use 80GB in Portege 4000?

I am tired of looking for a suitable hard drive for my Toshiba Portege 4000 (PIII) laptop. The only ones available come in 80GB. Is there any way I can fit that hard drive size in my laptop? I must know this before I buy one.

Very hard to say if the BIOS will recognize the new inserted 80GB HDD.
As far as I know the Portg 4000 was delivered with the 20GB HDD.
Hmm in my personal opinion the 80GB could works but cannot say it for sure!!!
You will have to test it because the Toshiba does not provide any official informations about the compatible HDD sizes.
What you need is a HDD which supports an IDE interface. You could buy one with ATA5 (U-DMA 5 100MB/sec) but it will run only at 66MB/sec due to the HDD controller limitation.

  • What SSD can I use on Portege R400

    Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a solid state disk that can be used? The Toshiba disks are safe but slow. A solid state disk is safe and *fast*.
Can anyone suggest a good solid state disk (round 100 GB)?
    Kind regards,

    Hi
Theoretically you can use any SSD drive but it should support the right interface.
As far as I know you should use SATA SSD drives
    I read some computer magazines and these SSD seems to be ok;

  • Portege 4000 - RAM upgrade & graphic card driver installation

I'm having a few issues with my Portege 4000 at the moment. I installed XP on one disk, but will need more RAM as I only have 256MB...
    - Have tried 2 manufacturers but the PC133 512 isn't compatible. However my system has an IBM chip of PC100 256 in it, which was bought at an earlier stage last year, after much trial and error, and I'm now wondering whether the motherboard will be more suited to PC100 rather than PC133?
    - Am considering alternative options to XP, namely 98SE or 2000 as these are lighter operating systems. I can put this on an alternative (test) disk. Is it possible to set up a partition for the Recovery CD Rom (which has 98SE) on it and have some space left over for installing another Linux o/s or does its partition manager overwrite everything?
    - I have put another post for .exe drivers relating to the display/vga for 98SE and 2000.
    - Just fyi, not all Linux distros seem to pick up on the monitor size, so this takes some work...
    Many Thanks for any help.

    The Protege 4000 is compatible with PC133 modules! As far as I know you can upgrade this notebook's RAM to 1GB (1024MB) and you could use these modules;
    PC133 512MB (PA3108U-1M51)
    PC133 256MB (PA3086U-1M25)
    PC133 128MB (PA3085U-1M12)

You could create some partitions on the HDD using an 3rd party tool like Partitions Magic 8. I use this tool and it's really nice.
After you have created 2 or three partitions on the HDD, you could install different OS (operating systems.)

  • Portege 4000 powers down after 20 mins

My Portege 4000 turns off abruptly after about 20 minutes, sometimes it holds our for 30-40 mins.
It then won't power back on for a few hours.
Here's what I've tried, and it still happens:
-On AC, with and without battery
-With a different (identical) AC apator
    -Unplugged running on battery
-Held at BIOS screen (incase it was a Windows issue)
The fan is working, although it doesn't feel very powerful.
And the power LED is flashing an error code (how can I decode this?).
Although I don't really use it very much, I really don't want to junk my little Portege.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
It sounds like a notebook overheating if the temperature is too high the notebook shuts down to prevent the hardware from damage
But the flashing error code is unusual. In my knowledge the long means 1 and short 0
Then you will get a number like for example this: 0001 0001 because of LSB (least significant bit) you have to read from behind 1000 1000 then convert it in HEX. Thats all
    Check also this:

But listen buddy I think you should contact the service technician the guy should check this notebook the fault is a little bit strange

  • Portege 4000 hard disc replacement

The hard disc on my portege 4000 has just crashed, can anyone please provide any guidance on a suitable replacement or upgrade part, where to purchase one and what is involved in making the change?

    Hi
the HDD replacement is not very difficult on the notebooks because mostly the HDD is laced at the bottom of the unit and its only necessary to remove the little cover.
To remove the HDD, follow the steps below:
    1. Turn the computer upside down.
    2. Remove two silver screws securing the HDD cover.
    3. Lift off the HDD cover.
    4. Grasp the plastic tab on the HDD to disconnect the HDD from the system board, then pull the HDD.
    5. Place the HDD pack on a flat surface and remove four flat-head screws.
    6. Remove the HDD bracket.
    Thats all :)
PS: I think you can use 10Gb, 20Gb and 30Gb HDDs

  • Do I need a new hard drive & can I use Leopard?

I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.5Ghz with OS X 10.3.9 on the original 80GB hard drive, I've been getting a lot of problems with the computer acting very slowly and getting 'hung up' with the color wheel spinning endlessly, during which nothing responds, I can't force quit, the only thing I can do is force a shut by holding down the power key. Sometimes it takes a long time to start up. I've tried re-installing the OS but still the same problems. I ran the Apple Hardware Test which gave this error code "2STF/4/3:ATA-100 ata-6-MASTER".
Does this all mean that my hard drive is going down and I need a new one?
Can I use any size hard drive e.g. a 250GB one?
Also - If I put a new hard drive in can I then install Leopard?
All info received with many thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
That code means there are problems with your hard drive. If you look at Disk utility (on your hard disk in applications/utilities) you may see that the S.M.A.R.T. status shows a problem. Or if you have SMARTreporter installed, it may not be green.
You can certainly use up to a 160GB hard drive. There was a discussion recently suggesting a BIOS (basic input output services) limit to 160GB ... I don't know if that's real or not.
If you do replace your hard drive, you might consider the slight price premium for a 7200rpm drive. You'll appreciate the extra snapiness in response time. And yes, you can install Leopard on it. After installing the new hard drive, boot from the DVD drive and use disk utility to format the hard drive in mac os extended (journaled) format. Then you can install Leopard.

  • Memory upgrade on Portege 4000

I bought memory to upgrade my Portege 4000 (128mb SDRAM SODIMM 144pin) when I installed this in the empty slot and turned on laptop the green light at the top came on, the power led but nothing booted and no noise to suggest anything had booted either!
I took this new module out and left the original in there and it booted perfectly. Does anyone know what the problem is?
    Please help!
    Thanks in advance !

Its a clear case dude either the memory module is faulty or you use a not compatible and not supported one!!!!
The Portege 4000 supports max 1024MB (2x512MB) memory.
I think you should try the Toshiba recommended memory SDRAM modules like these:
    PC133 512MB (PA3108U-1M51)
    PC133 256MB (PA3086U-1M25)
    PC133 128MB (PA3085U-1M12)
    Good luck

  • Can I use OS9 as the start up disk on my Intel Mac?

I have a new Intel iMac. I want to partition my hard drive, install OS9 and run the old system. I know I can't use "classic" on 10.4.7 but I wonder if I could simply install OS9 and reboot my computer. I don't need to move between the two, meaning I don't need to work in OS9 then instantly click and be in 10.4.7. I can deal with the inconvenience of rebooting.
    I'm having 3 problems
#1, I have an old version of Photoshop. I'll buy the newest Photoshop someday but the latest version wasn't made for Intel Macs and it is very expensive. $600. I wonder if it runs slow on Intel Macs. Maybe I should wait for the next version.
#2 I have a great Epson printer (875 DC) but Epson has not updated the print drivers for this model and probably won't. OK fine I can buy a newer better photo printer $550.
#3 I have a "Nikon Coolscan 4000" film Scanner $1,300. This scanner is great in OS9 but the thing never worked in OS10 and now that I have this Intel iMac I downloaded the latest software update and the thing still doesn’t work and if the computer sleeps while the Nikon software is open it won't wake up and I have to restart.
To sum everything up, can I run OS9 on my Intel iMac? I don't care if I have to work in OS9 then shut down and restart to work in 10.4.7 Can this Intel iMac understand OS9. If I try to restart using OS9 as the startup disk will I damage the computer? Will I screw things up and have to spend hours and days removing files and correcting problems?
I feel like this computer is a fresh clean new baby and I'm afraid that if I start messing around with it I'll regret it.

    Hello,
I have a new Intel iMac. I want to partition my hard
drive, install OS9 and run the old system. I know I
can't use "classic" on 10.4.7 but I wonder if I could
simply install OS9 and reboot my computer.
The problem here, is that the OS 9 environment / Operating System will only run on a PowerPC processor.
The only reason that OS X will run on either processor, is that it was specifically designed to do so from the beginning.
But, OS 9 and older were specifically written for the PowerPC / Motorola processors.
So, you will need a machine with a PowerPC processor to run OS 9.
Currently, there is one program that will enable OS 9 to run on an Intel Mac. But, it requires making a copy of the Power Macintosh ROM. So, it's legal use is questionable at best.
    http://www.gibix.net/projects/sheepshaver/
This program works by emulating the PowerPC processor. And, it is reported to operate at roughly 1/8-th of native speeds. So, it could be pretty slow for productive photo work.

newest Photoshop someday but the latest version
wasn't made for Intel Macs and it is very expensive.
$600. I wonder if it runs slow on Intel Macs. Maybe I
should wait for the next version.
If it is a Mac OS X version, then it will run on the Intel systems. But, yes it will be slower. Usable, but slower.
I haven't tried this program, so I cannot personally comment on it. But, even Steve Jobs admitted it was slow on the Intel Macs.
#2 I have a great Epson printer (875 DC) but Epson
has not updated the print drivers for this model and
probably won't. OK fine I can buy a newer better
    photo printer $550.
OS X comes with drivers for the Epson Stylus Photo 875. They are provided by the Gimp-Print layer. But, installed / select just like any other printer. So, as long as you can connect the printer using USB, then you can select the driver for the 875 and be fine (as long as this is the same printer).
Otherwise, some people have reportedly installed PowerPC print drivers without trouble. I haven't tried it myself.
    #3 I have a "Nikon Coolscan 4000" film Scanner
$1,300. This scanner is great in OS9 but the thing
never worked in OS10 and now that I have this Intel

thing still doesn’t work and if the computer sleeps
while the Nikon software is open it won't wake up and
    I have to restart.
    Can't really help you there.
To sum everything up, can I run OS9 on my Intel iMac?
I don't care if I have to work in OS9 then shut down
and restart to work in 10.4.7 Can this Intel iMac
understand OS9. If I try to restart using OS9 as the
startup disk will I damage the computer? Will I screw
things up and have to spend hours and days removing
    files and correcting problems?
As mentioned above, the only method currently available to use OS 9 on an Intel system is that SheepShaver program.
But, I would not expect good results with it for your uses. And, it's legal status would be questionable since you need to copy a ROM file from another Mac to use it (which goes against Apple's license agreement).
I feel like this computer is a fresh clean new baby
and I'm afraid that if I start messing around with it
    I'll regret it.
Just make sure you have a good backup of everything before you start experimenting.
    I hope this helps.

  • Can I use HP System Recovery Disks on a new hard drive replacement with a lower storage capacity?

Can I use the HP System Recovery Disks from my HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Select Edition Entertaimnent Notebook PC when I replace the failing hard drive with a smaller storage capacity hard drive?  Right now it is a Toshiba 750GB SATA hard disk drive, 5400 RPM, 2.5 inch small form factor (SFF) and I am planning to replace it with the Toshiba HDKCB26 500GB 2.5 inch Hybrid Hard Drive.  I read that I cannot use a System Image to restore the hard drive because it is a smaller capacity then the original Hard Drive. If this is true, it seems that my only option is to use the HP Recovery Disks.

    Hi:
Normally the HP recovery disks don't work on a smaller hard drive either, but it may be possible in your case if HP offered a 500 GB HDD in that model series.
    No guarantees though.

    Hello,
As Murugesh had said in his previous post, you should have a new internal table with two fields: GSBER and AMOUNT. Since your question was to  were asking to merge the records to get the <i>respective</i> amounts, this is the way to do it.
But if you are just bothered with finding out what the total amount is regardless of the GSBER value, then you will have to use the approach Murugesh had suggested in his second reply.
The structure of the new internal table would therefore be determined by what the result you are seeking is.

    Anand Mandalika.
