Can I use a 12" logic board in a 14" iBook?

Hello,
Here's what could be a stupid question - but I'm going to ask it anyway!
Will a logic board from a 12" 800 Mhz G3 white iBook fit into (and work in) a 14" 800 Mhz G3 white iBook?

I would say that it won't work, based on the fact that macrecycling.com lists logic boards specifically for the 14-inch model:

If they are interchangeable, it would seem that their listings would reflect that fact.

Hi, my logic board has failed in my G3 ibook 600mhz, I have just managed to find a replacement board for it which has a 16VRAM in it. I have checked the box on my ibook & it says it is 8VRAM. Will the logiv board still be ok to fit/work etc?

That post is rather misleading.
The 8 MB logic boards probably fail less often than the 32 MB ones, from what I've seen here.
The 16 MB logic board failures may not be seen quite as often because there were comparatively few of them produced. Apple produced many more 8 MB and 32 MB iBooks than 16 MB ones, so it stands to reason that we would not see as many reports here of 16 MB logic board failures as we do failures in the other models.
The poster in the post cited did not say he actually installed the logic board he purchased, although that is certainly the assumption one would tend to make from the statement.

Can I buy a new Logic Board for an iBook G3 700 12"?

The Logic Board in my iBook G3 700 12" just died. My local reseller says it doesn't qualify for the replacement program.
Anyone know where can I get a NEW Logic Board for my iBook?
I don't like the thought of buying a used on on eBay and having the same problem 6 months from now.

In the DTP select the file location as application server and give the logical file path. The actual file and logical path can be created using transaction "FILE" and "AL11".
Rest of the process is same as that of extraction from local file.

Has anyone ever installed a G4 logic board into a G3 iBook?

I was just wondering if it was at all possible to install a G4 logic board in a G3 iBook. To be specific, I have an iBook G3 900MHz with a faulty logic board. I could have it replaced under the Apple Logic Board Replacement Program, but I'd hate to replace a bad part with a part that will most likely go bad in the future. Also, trying to find an affordable (in the $100 range) replacement logic board on eBay or anywhere else is proving impossible.
So, could I buy a 1GHz or similar G4 logic board and swap it into the G3 iBook? I'm sure someone out there has tried something like this, right?

I doubt it. They don't even take the same kind of RAM.
What makes you think a replacement "will most likely go bad in the future"? Some have had to go back more than once; many haven't. (And many have not gone in at all.) There are many iBook users out there, happily iBooking away without any knowledge of the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program because they've never had a problem.
Get it replaced, free, NOW, and worry about the future when it gets here.

Sourcing and fitting a logic board for my crocked ibook - any tips?

like quite a few others, it seems, the logic board on my g3 ibook 14.1in has passed away. i don't have any apple care coverage, and nor am i covered by the logic board extension repair programme (though quite why, no one at mac was able to explain to me). so begins the hunt for a new or second-hand logic board which i'm (gulp) going to try to fit myself.
if any one had any tips as to where i might get a good deal on the correct logic board, i'd be very grateful. also, am i mad to try to fit one myself? my tech-literate IT genius of a brother is actually going to be wielding the scalpel, while i pace up and down beside him. and i have found a guide with pix on the net - but any encouraging words would be very welcome...

thanks to you both for your help. here's what happened in the end...
i phoned customer service twice to try to persuade them that my ibook ought to be repaired under the logic board extension repair programme - i was told on both occasions that it didn't qualify. so i tried a third time, for luck, and it worked - the computer was repaired for free under the programme. i'm just going to pick it up now.
seems to me that the customer service team isn't quite au fait with the qualification criteria as detailed on the programme's FAQ, so it's worth being patient with them. in my case, i think the fact that my computer was a refurbished ibook threw them - it had a serial number beginning RMxxx, not UVxxx, but it did fall within the models specified for the programme, a fact which, eventually, was acknowledged. the result is that i've saved myself at least £500.

Is there anything I can possibly do about these logic boards?

Ok, I have 4 broken 4th Generation iPods. Two of them are white 20GB models, one is a white 40GB model, and one is a U2 Special Edition 20GB model. All of them have broken logic boards. Every month or so I give them another go to see if I can get any of them working. But, like usual, I tried today and had no luck.
EDIT: Let me specify, these are all monochrome 4th generation models.
The difference here (as opposed to previous attempts) is that now I have a working monochrome 4G (meaning a perfect functioning logic board) that I purchased since my last attempt at fixing these (meaning I now have 1 working iPod but still the 4 broken ones). I was able to restore one of my spare hard drives (20GB MK2006GAL model) with firmware version 3.1.1 using this working iPod. I was even able to add songs, and after disconnecting, play them in the working iPod. Not to mention, the hard drive sounds like it is running beautifully.
So, I thought, "maybe if I plug a 4th gen formatted, working hard drive with the latest 4th gen firmware into one of these corrupted iPods, they'll at least play the music, even if they won't connect to the PC". Wrong. I still get the old routine of Apple logo, folder icon, "Do not disconnect" for about 5 seconds until it resets itself to the Apple logo, a sad face, and finally a low battery sign (regardless of how charged the battery is) in that exact order. This occurs with 3 of the logic boards. The other logic board, which was originally in the U2 iPod, is able to boot up, and choose a language, but the logic board is broken in that the battery is undetected (no charging, and as soon as you unplug it, poof, its gone). I've tried several batteries that I know work; I am 100% positive it is a logic board issue.
I've tried diagnostic mode on each and every iPod. On the working 4th gen (with functioning logic board), they pass HDD R/W and HDD SCAN. But they never complete on any other iPod; even after an hour, they've done nothing, and act like they have frozen. I've run the 5-in-1 test on each of these, and they all complete fine.
So... I guess it all comes down to corrupted logic boards prevent the iPod from properly booting, connecting, and completing diagnostic tests. Is there ANYTHING I can do to rewrite or fix these files? Would connecting to a Mac help at all? (I ask because there is no Mac available to me, not even at a local computer store, but if you guys think it would help, I would go out of my way to the Apple store about 1 hour away). I know Mac's use different formats for the hardware, but I thought this was all hard drive related. Thanks for any help/recommendations/etc.
Oh, one last note, about that logic board that is able to boot but can't detect the battery: It actually can tell if theres a battery there, but it just doesn't... work. Like, if I have a completely dead battery installed, and I try to plug it in, I get the battery with exclamation point icon. If I plug it in with a battery 50% charged, it will boot and the battery icon will show that is it 50% charged, but it won't charge it, and it still turns off it its disconnected. Any help with this would be great as well.

I tried running the HP tool today, to see if that would help, but it to was unable to detect my iPod.
I should also point out that Windows can not detect my iPod either (and thus it has no drive assigned to it).

Can't boot G5, bad logic board?

G5 Dual 2.0 Ghz, 4 GB Ram
Can't get past blue screen unless I boot in safe mode, then I can get in.
Here's what I've tried:
5 different boot volumes, including Tiger and Leopard and a clean install
internal drives only, external drives only
reseated ram
zapped pram
zapped nvram
reset pmu
booted in single user mode, gets stuck at workaround bonjour unknown error 0
pulled out airport card, reseated airport card
tried just about everything, always stops at the blue screen with cursor
does this sound like a bad logic board or is there anything else I can try? thanks

Just analyzing: You're not able to boot normally from any installed system on any hard disk, but you can boot in the single user mode, are able to use AHT and the G5 even boots from the TechTool disk.
However, you do not state you installed those five systems mentioned recently, so the question is: How stable is your computer booted from a DVD (grey install disk or the TechTool bootable disk and are you able to do a fresh system install now?
I don't think your RAM chips are bad, but there could be a problem with (one of) the SATA cables connecting the hard drive to the logic board. Did you try both data cables (by using the second drive bay)? As you undoubtedly know a PowerMac cannot boot from an external USB drive, but having a bad internal data cable could also prevent starting up from a FireWire drive. And take a critical look at the four guide screws: are they well fitted?
From your description I understand you own a dual processor and not the late 2005 duo core G5. These computers are very different animals indeed.

Can't open Aperture after Logic Board replaced

Have a question regarding obtaining new serial number for the Aperture program as after my mac (version 10.5.8) had a Logic Board replaced
Aperture program ( 2.1.4) does not open as require serial number what I do no have anymore (all packaging gone long ago).
So if I buy a copy of Aperture 2.1.1, it will give me a new serial number.
Will I be able to use that serial number to open the program I have (aperture 2.1.4)?
Or what is the best way to obtain images from the program i can't open anymore?

Do you have an external drive, where you can copy your Aperture Library to?
Make sure, this drive is formatted Mac OS X extended, before you copy the Aperture Library to it.
Also set the "Ignore Ownership" on this volume flag. (When you select your external drive in the Finder and use the "Get Info" command, you'll see this flag in the "Sharing and Permissions" brick.
You can simply drag the Aperture library to the external drive, using the Finder.
Then connect the drive to your new Mac.
Now you first need to repair your Aperture library - it is safer:
Select the Aperture library on the drive in the Finder. Hold down the ⌥⌘-keys and double click the library. Select "Repair Database" and let that run. That may take some time.
After this you should be able to double click the Library and to open it in Aperture 3 as regular library.
Without an external drive you need to copy using the Network or to mount your ols Mac in Target Disk mode http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3838?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US. Connect it to your new mac with USB or firewire and boot it with the T key held down.
Then your new mac will see the old one as external drive.
To extract only images from your saved Masters folder, select the Masters folder you copied in the Finder, then press ⌘F. In the search panel that opens add a search (press +) and set the search to "Kind is image".
This should show all images in the folder.
Caution! If the headline is set to "This Mac" and not to the name of the folder, you need to edit the preferences of the Finder. In the "Advanced" tab of the panel set the "When performing a search" to "Search this folder".
Don't touch any images in the search, if the heading shows "this mac". Then you are risking to move any image file on your mac.

"Where" questions are more easily answered if you give your approximate location. Especially important if you live in the US because there is a low-cost repair option for which you can ask.
If you are out of warranty and you live in the US, the most cost-effective solution is a depot repair. Instead of fixing the computer in an Apple Store, it is sent to a central refurbishment center and they fix anything that's wrong (other than damage to the case and/or display) for a flat fee of around US$325. It takes about a working week but it is worth it. All the posts here from people who have availed themselves fo this option were glowing.

If your logic board requires replacing an Apple store or AASP will be able to help. Unless the failure is covered by warranty it will be an expensive repair.

I have a problem with my macbook pro 15" which bought around June 2007.I believe logic board is bad. Take to store and they quote $310 to fix MBP if the problem is not cause by video issue or free if it cause by video issue. Hope this info can help you.

I have an opportunity to buy a used copy of Logic Studio 9. Can I register it afresh ok?

If it includes the serial # then there shouldn't be any problem. Just watch out to receive the whole Logic Studio v9 package and not only an update package.

How can I complain about a logic board failure after warranty??

My iBook G4 12" has been diagnosed with logic board failure. I just bought it 1 year and 2 months ago..and the tecnhical service charges me US 820!!! for change the logic board (more than the half of the original price of the notebook!!!). I can't believe that a notebook could die so soon. I live in Chile (SouthAmerica) so I don't know how can I complain to Apple..I think they should respond for this because is a fabric failure right?

The Danish government is pressuring Apple to admit this is a design flaw, but so far they have not commented on the subject. If you have local consumer protection agencies, you could try making a complaint to them about Apple, but I'm not sure I like your chances.

How can I tell if the logic board is bad?

My mom has a flat-panel iMac (20") that has been refusing to boot since this past weekend. My sister and I tried every trick we could come up with to get it to boot, but the only thing that resulted in anything other than a blinking question mark was powering up while holding the eject button. This caused the computer to boot up from the external firewire hard drive. We were not able to get the disc tray to open, so we couldn't start up from the Hardware Test CD. I have two questions:
Is there a way to physically force the tray to open? (We've tried all the suggestions offered by Apple Support, to no avail, and the iMac has no hole for the old paper-clip trick.)
Is there a way to tell whether the hard drive is dead or the logic board is bad? We strongly suspect it's one or the other.

Hello! You have one or two problems and both are likely related. The fact that the cd/dvd drive isn't responding indicates problems with it however it could be related to the hard drive problem. The fact that it will boot from another source indicates that the logic board is ok. If you like to tinker then you might want to consider buying a new computer and using the one with problems to learn more about working on one. I've never been a fan of all-in-one type computers because when component goes out you either in for a difficult job in repairing it yourself or you forfeit the value on the component (s) that are still good. That's why I personally think towers are better long term values. Sure they're not quite as "cool" as the iMac but I'd rather pay for computing power and long term useability. Tom
