Hi so I have a little problem here. I sold a PowerMac G4 AGP to a friend of mine. It has the stock 400Mhz processor installed with Panther running on it.
My friend got an iPod for christmas and it requires Tiger to sync it. The problem is that whenever I installed Tiger on the machine, applications would crash like crazy, a problem that I finally figured out was because of a flaw in the processor. I re-installed Panther and the stability issues were basically gone.
So my question here is, is it possible to put a 466Mhz processor from a Digital Audio PowerMac G4 in the AGP mac? I know that the 466Mhz processor has a 133Mhz bus as apposed to the 100Mhz bus of the previous processor so could the computer clock it down possibly or will this not work at all?

Unless you used a really rigorous method to decide your problems with Panther Vs. Tiger was a flaw in the processor, I am reluctant to believe your conclusion.
10.4 Tiger requires a lot more memory that 10.3 Panther. I have Tiger running on a Blue & White G3 with only 256 MB RAM, and it crashes A LOT. If you are near the 256 MB mark or lower, get some more RAM and you may be just fine.
The 466 processor will probably fit and run, but it will be quite a bit slower than 466 because it will not be clocked at the correct speed.

Help - which FCP can I use with my Mac processor (2 x 2.5Ghz) G5?

I am so utterly confused by this G5. My daughter suggested I buy one as she is a graphic designer and highly recommended a Mac. However, I couldn't afford a new machine, so found a Mac processor G5. It looks like a decent machine, but the bewildering OS versions, specifications and expensive software has me baffled.
I wanted to buy Final Cut Pro to edit video footage but as soon as I started looking, I found that almost every site said that whatever version of FCP I looked at, it would not run on my G5. I bought OS 10.4 Tiger as that seems to be the last OS that can be used on the machine. The spec is: OS 10.4 Tiger (all up to date), 2 x 2.5Ghz Mac (PPC) processors, plus as much RAM as could be crammed into it.
Out of desperation (and a frustrating experience with Adobe Premiere Elements 7) I bought Premiere Elements 9 as it had a PC and Mac licence in the same package. Guess what - I was told the software would be excellent on my G5 but as usual, the advice was incorrect; Premiere Elements 9 will only run on an Intel-equipped Mac. It is fine on my PC though.
Can anyone help? Please be a person who owns or has owned a PPC G5 and preferably with FCP loaded. Or someone who knows the real thing to do - I cannot afford any more duff info.

The last and latest version of final cut to run on PPC (AND intel by the way) was FCP 5.1, which shipped as part of Final Cut Studio1. Good luck trying to find a copy-- This was the universal cross grade that you got by sending your disks to Apple.

I don't think so. You could use Remote Desktop, but it would be slow and annoying, and it costs more than a decent 19" ViewSonic.
But that would be nice. I'd love to run even my iMac G4 into my wife's iMac G5 screen.

Which Java packages can be used in Script processors and where/how to customise EDQ

The online help for the Script processor shows an example using java.util:
output1 = java.util.UUID.randomUUID().toString()
but are there any other packages that can be used?
The background to this question is that we'd like to know whether it might be possible to call a web service from an EDQ process - would this possible through scripting, by creating a new processor or through some other customisation.
More fundamentally is there anything explaining where and how 'native' EDQ (i.e. not additional packs like the Customer Data Services Pack) can be customised and for what typical purposes.

On the PowerMac G4 I had it had to be connected, but not sure about the model you have. My guess would be yes due to shielding in the case, but would rather wait and hear from someone else.

I am unsure what you mean by usign LabVIEW instead of Python - what part of the system would LabVIEW replace? Usually if you were using Python in automated test, it would be to handle the test processing, which in this case is done by TestStand.
As for advantages of TestStand over LabVIEW, the main one which SunRS mentioned is that TestStand has a test management engine, which covers result logging and passing test parameters to the various test modules, which can be written in many languages. As I mentioned above, it is Python which is commonly used to write alternative test managament engines. It is possible to write one in LabVIEW, but for good results it must be carefully architected and is typically a very time-consuming task if you want to keep it modular and use it for other applications. TestStand also has a number of built in tools which help to monitor various aspects of the test sequences, as well as provide multithreading optimisations.

Can't use Graphics Processor for Photoshop CS6 on Windows 8

I just got a fresh upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro (not beta) but then I can't use Photoshop that well. In the Preferences > Performance, I can't tick "Use Graphics Processor". I have an ATI graphics card and yep, I've already tried upgrading/reinstalling my graphics driver, even installing old ones -- and still, this doesn't solve my problem (even in its control panel, I can't seem to see the settings of the graphics card!)
Any ideas/suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks!

What display driver have you installed? And what is your card?
The ATI Catalyst 12.8 driver release claims to be compatible with Windows 8, though I haven't tried the combination myself yet.
Did you install Windows 8 as an upgrade or a clean install? The latter is always preferable.
I know a secret registry incantation that will force Photoshop to use the OpenGL subsystem no matter what, and I've used that to get GPU acceleration in a test installation in a virtual machine, but rather that put that forth just yet let's find out if you've done all you can the "above board" way first.

Can't speak about avid, since I am not familiar with the software.
You can certainly use FCP X on that machine. It should work better if you use a fast external drive for your media and projects.
There is a free trial, so try it out and see how it goes. You should also follow some good video tutorials, if you are not familiar with the application. FCP X is a lot different from Avid, Premiere or even Final Cut Pro 7.
