Can I use a 3TB HD in my g5?
Hey!
I was recently on the crucial.com website looking for a price on memory upgrades for my g5 1.8 DP and thye also suggested a new hard drive. However, they said that my Mac could use a 3TB HD. I thought I had read long ago that the pre-PCIe G5 Macs (like mine) would only support 500 gigs tops for hard drives.
Who is correct?
Your G5 will support larger than 500 GB drives; 500 GB was the largest offered at the time of sale is all.
1TB, 1.5 TB and 2 TB drives are no problem in the G5, but larger than 2.2 TB breaks a capacity limit for APM (Apple Partition Map in formatting is required for boot in a PPC Mac). For use of a 3 TB or 4 TB drive, partition the drive so that no 1 partition is larger than 2 TB. The drive should then have all space available.
Otherwise, for storage only, using Tiger or Leopard, format GPT. These drives (formatted with GPT) are not bootable in a PPC Mac; G3, G4 or G5.
One other potential issue to consider is SATA 3 Gb/s (SATA rev. 2) and SATA 6 Gb/s (SATA rev. 3) related.
The SATA rev. 1 controller of the G5 works well with SATA rev. 2 drives, but is not so friendly with SATA rev. 3 drives. SATA rev. 3 drives from Hitachi (7K series) typically work as is. Drives from Western Digital (Black and Blue series) require a jumper on pins 5 and 6 to limit a SATA 6 Gb/s drive to SATA 3 Gb/s to work well in a G5. If not jumped, the drive is typically not seen.
I wouldn't advise use of any make or model of "green" or 5400 RPM drive.

Can I use a 3TB Hard Drive in my iMac mid 2010 27" ?
I am updating my system with SSD and I want to replace the stock HD with a 3TB Hard Drive. It's an Hitachi HD.
Maybe...but the problem is heat. You can always add it externally via Firewire using a Newertech Voyager.
http://www.macsales.com may be able to install it safely in your machine as well. They also offer an option to add an eSATA port on some iMacs. Check with them what your options are. -
I have used Airport Time Capsule with my iMac for a couple years. I recently purchased a MacBook Air and when it tried to backup to Time Capsule it couldn't because Time Capsule is full. How can I now use the 3TB Airport Time Capsule to back up both the iMac and MacBook Air? I don't mind losing earlier backups. I have excluded some items from backing up, but since the Airport Time Capsule is full, I can't even begin to back up the MacBook Air.
On your Mac.......
Open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click on the Disks tab at the top of the window
Click Erase Disk
On the next window that appears, select the Quick Erase option, then click Erase
The operation will only take a few minutes.
Now you are ready to start new backups of both Macs. Back up one Mac first, then back up the other. Do not try to back up both Macs as the same time. -
I just purchased a 3TB Time Capsule. I live in Italy and have 220V power. The Time Capsule is rated for that, but the cord says 125V. Can I use this cord with an adapter, or do I need to buy a new cord at an Italian store?
Due to the kind of plug used the US power cord is rated at the 125v value.. and legally we cannot advise you to use on higher voltages.. although I have never had issues in Australia.. 240v.
But adapters from your Euro power plug to US are generally ugly .. unsightly things.. and often sit high above the socket and are none too stable.. I agree with Bob.. just go out and buy a standard figure 8 power cord.. check with Apple in Italy for a white one.. if you are going to have it on show.. black are far more common. Or even check ebay for a standard power Apple power cord as a number of items they sell use the figure8 socket. -
Hi, 80 % of my itunes files are located on a 3tb external drives; the remainder on a 4TB drive as I ran pout of space. ALL my files are on copied on to the 4TB drive . How do I get iTunes just to use the files on the 4tb drive so I can use the 3tb for other purposes THX .
Select the desired location in preferences, then consolidate the media files to it.

Can I use a usb external hard drive larger than 2TB? I have tried to use a 3TB but it shows up as 800GB. Even tred to reformat in disk utility but only shows as 800 gb as well. It is a Seagate 3TB harddrive and enclosure. Nothing on the Seagate site about it other than it says Mac os through 10.6 is supported for larger than 2TB (might be old).
You might have better luck in the Snow Leopard community. I'll ask the hosts to relocate your post.

i have 1TB time capsule and i need to back up more media. Can i also use a 3TB time capsule asswell?
You can, but it is not possible to continue backups "seamlessly" from one Time Capsule to the other.
Time Machine will make a new complete backup of each Mac on the first pass when you connect the new 3TB Time Capsule. -
Can I use my new airport time capsule 3TB for my personal cloud
I am trying to get my own personal cloud. Can I use my new airport time capsule to accomplish this?
The Time Capsule stores data on its internal drive and not in the cloud. If you want it actually put in the cloud, it needs to be separately set up with a hosting or storage service.

TM backup: can I use two drives to back up data on two other drives?
Hi to all!
I have with me a 1 TB/ Thunderbolt EHD [external hard drive], a Lacie 2 TB/FW, EHD, a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD, a Seagate 3 TB/ 2 USB, EHD and [to be purchased] a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD.
I mainly use my Mac for making HD videos using FCPX.
I am planning to use these drives in the following manner as indicated by the table below:
Drive:
a
1 TB,
Thunderbolt,
Buffalo
b
2 TB/ FW
LaCie
c
2 TB/ 2 usb
Seagate
d
3 TB/ 2 usb
Seagate
e
2 TB/ 2 usb
Seagate backup
[to be purchased]
f
500 GB, internal
Macintosh HD
Partitions

USAGE:
editing videos, one
active project at a time
mainly for camera
archives, music files,
FCP events, projects
and exported movies
same as the LaCie,
as a backup of data
intend to have 2
partitions of 1.5 TB each;
one partition for personal
data and the other partition
to back up data on the
Thunderbolt [current project]
intend to use this for
TM back up of my
Mac's internal HD
applications, documents etc.
backed up by:
one partition of 'd'
by the 2 TB Seagate
backup 'e'
I would like to know whether I could do these things:
Can I use the TM backup feature in this manner of using 2 separate drive/partition [e/d] to back up data on 2 other drives [f and a]?
Further, I am manually copying files from 'b' drive to 'c' drive; without incurring further expense, can I ensure that whatever I write onto the LaCie [b] gets copied to the 'c' drive automatically?
Any thoughts, suggestions and instructions in these matters are welcome.EXT. DRIVES:

2 TB/FW
[LaCie]
c
2 TB/ USB

[Seagate]
USAGE:
scratch disk
[planning to have
only one active
project at a time]
camera footage
FCPX events, projects
and completed movies
Same as the LaCie,
as it's backup
To be used as TM
backup for my Mac's
internal and also to
the scratch disk.
Planning to have it in
2 partitions: to have
a 'secondary' copy of
my Mac's IHD on one
partition and to have
personal 'net retrievable'
data on the other partition.
'MY
OBSERVATIONS'
my projects are usually
less than 10 minutes
and hence I trust that
work would be fast and in
case of drive failure, I
would be losing only
one project.
I am importing camera footage
primarily into this drive and
being FW, data transfer is
fast.
Am manually copying
files from the LaCie
onto this.
This drive is not a
brand new one, but
has been given to me
by the company's
agent as a replacement
to my earlier 2 TB drive
which had failed.Hope
this also will not fail!
Because of the 'uncertain'
performance of the
3 TB Seagate, I intend
to have a copy of my
Mac's IHD in one
partition. I intend to place only
such data upon the other
partition that I will not be
greatly affected should the
drive fail.
If you can analyse this plan and give your insight upon this matter, I will be immensely happy.
Further, if this proposed use of the 3 TB Seagate is okay with you, I need to know how to remove the Thunderbolt from doing it's temporary role of TM backup and how to coronate the 3TB Seagate as its successor.
FYI, I would be switching off TM from functioning whenever I am editing video; I would be switching it on only after a full editing session.
Another question on my mind is this: do I need to partition the drive 'e' at all?

Ive gota 16gb ipad 3 with wifi and cell, but I cant justify data at $10 a gig for watching tv and movies while im in VA hospital. Can I use an airport with a drive attached to store more of my movies or am I relegated to using a laptop and syncing every few hours...
I thought NAS might be an answer but my browsing suggests that Its not simple. I just want to watch want I own on iTunes already. the hospital has a 50mb a day wifi you can pay for but that's no where near enough for any video etc
on previous visits I've taken a small tv and my apple tv and streamed from the laptop but that's a lot of stuff to take and the hospital doesn't like you using too many electronic devices at once. I thought maybe the ipad could stream stored stuff from an airport if its iTunes? but I don't want to spend $400 to buy a 3tb airport if it wont workNo, it won't work.. the Airports are not media devices.. they have no brains .. no media extensions.. and itunes must be running on a computer.
You can however watch movies from storage but not with itunes..
See how people use tools like VLC to get around Apple's built in iTunes limitations.

Can I put a 3TB hard drive?
I have an AirPort Extreme in place a USB 1TB hard drive and my question is. Can I put a 3TB hard drive?
3TB is no problem.. you will need to format it on the Mac HFS+ ie Mac OS extended journaled. Don't try using FAT32 etc for such a large drive.

Can I use time capsule as an external hard drive as well as a back up?
Hi
I have a Macbook air and a 3TB Time Capsule.
Can I use this as a hard drive (media storage) as well as for back up?
ThanksPeople do, but it's not a good idea. There's conflicting needs between Time Machine and other uses for the drive.
The #1 reason why it isn't a good idea is where are your media backups? -

I just started getting the same message. I'm using a Western Digital My Book 3TB disk. Normally I have the backups done with the disk attached to Airport Extreme.
I hate to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple. See: Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
Backup failed with error: The target disk image volume is read-only.
Most likely, you got this message before all this started:
What that doesn't explicity say is, the backups failed the verification. When that happens, Time Machine marks the sparse bundle as damaged and won't back up to it anymore (even if Repair Disk can't find the problem). See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details. -
Can i use the G-Technology G-DRIVE hard drive to extend my time machine capacity?
I have a time capsule of 1TB but there are more MacBooks using it. So I would like to extend my disk space. Can I use the G-Technology G-DRIVE hard drive of 4 TB to do that? Another option is to buy a new time capsule of 3TB. What would be the best solution?
If the MacBooks are only using wireless for backups as I presume you are, then the speed of USB is ok.
But how old is the 1TB version TC.. ??
It must be at least, 3-4years now.. as the 1TB model finished in the Gen3 TC and we are now up to Gen5.
I really think if the TC has a crucial role in the network you replace before it breaks which tend to be sudden and fully dead.. rather than wait for it to fail.
On the other hand moving the backups to an external drive on the TC means that you simply plug it into a new TC if it does break.
Will the G-Drive work.. hmmm yes, but make sure you know the return policy of the store.
Or order it from people who are Mac aware like OWC..
Do not buy a raid box.. it should be a simple single disk. Raid versions will generally fail on the TC.
4TB is no problem on the later firmware. Although I think value for money is better with 3TB. -
Can we use IF statement in PDF templates
Hi,
I developed a PDF template. I need to underline ang bold the records based on a specific condition. Can we use IF conditon in PDF templates. Please suggest.
Thanks...Billy Verreynne wrote:
The case syntax is a bit funny though as there's not a single condition evaluation (like a DECODE or case structs from some other languages).
This is what I would expect a typical case struct to look like - evaluating a single condition:
case <condition>
when <value-1> then return <result-1>
when <value-n> then return <result-n>
else
return <return-z>
end
