Can I use a 6 GB/sec sata drive in Mac Pro

Will I have any operating problems installing additional hard drive with 6GB/sec speed in a Mac Pro?  The Mac Pro manual says the computer reads at 3GB/sec.

Throw out those out of date 'specs' or take with grain of salt.
You want the newest drives. Even if we don't have SATA III controller.
And most buyers don't have the latest motherboards and SATA3 (and some that did like Early 2011 Macs had trouble  with the controllers but never the dries).
None of the drives need jumpers that was an old issue back in G5 days and not since.

Yes, it supports target display mode. Windows can be run with either Parallels or Boot Camp.

can i use Apple 2005 20-inche cinema display on Mac pro ?

If the display has a DVI connector it will plug into the Mac Pro directly.  If it uses ADC (Apple Display Connector)
    <http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/AppleDisplayConnector.jpg>
you will need a DVI to ADC adapter

No. Target Display mode is only supported when connected to a Mac running 10.6 or later.
It cannot be used with a PC, bootcamp, gamaing console, cable box, DVR or PowerPC Mac.

  • Can I use XP, Vista and Windows Server on my Mac Pro

Looking for options to have multiple Operating Systems available for bootup.
I need to have the ability to run XP, Vista, Windows 2003 and Windows 2008 server. I am currently using a Windows PC with BootCommander. I want to use my Mac Pro for its power.
I have tried to use VMWare Fusion and it works perfectly. However, Camtasia crashes regularly within Fusion and I need high resolution desktop captures and the way virtualization does (rather does not) virtualize the RAM on the video card has made it not a viable solution.
    Your help is appreciated.

Format one or more of your drives as MBR and setup some partitions. Install in proper order. Or use multiple drives. Maybe someone on Fusion forum can help.

Some have used multiple VMs with Fusion and Apple Pro RAID5.

  • Can I use a new CPU in my early 2009 MAC PRO Single 2.8 Quadcore

Is it possble to replace the CPU Module with the latest CPU moduels on off for the Mac Pro?
    The current one is below
    Header 1
    Header 2
Mac Pro4.1 Quad Core Intel Xeon 2.66
    i Processor Early 2009

Hello. I have done this many times. When I originally had the 2009 Nehalem single quad, it was a 2.66 processor as well. I bought the w3580 which is the top of the line of that generation and runs at 3.33 ghz with turbo boost up to 3.60. The procedure to change the 2.66 to say the 3.33 is the same as for the 2010 series processors 2.8(also nehalem w3530) and the 3.2 which is a w3565. The only processors you would not be able to upgrade with the original 2009 boards are the hex core, or w36xx series. This is because of the firmware upgrade which recognizes Westmere or B1 stepping.
Think of it this way.. any w35xx will work in the 2009 and or 2010 mac pro(single quad only) while the w36xx series will only work in the 2010 series.
Mind me asking what you currently use your mac pro for of which would warrant the need to go with a higher speed processor? You could very well just max out the memory and or pick up SSD drives and that alone will help to dramatically speed things up. W3580 3.33 will run you about 400-600 dollars, sometimes even less. The w3580 is the max you can go with the 2009 mac pro series.. then its getting the dual boards if you want to go even further, but I don't recommend that as the processor board and processors themselves are about as close to a 2010 mac pro.

  • Can I use my iMac as a screen for my Mac Pro via Spaces?

Ok, I know this sounds odd... Nevertheless, I wanted to know if it's possible to do this. I write a lot of music and want to use two completely different computers to manipulate midi files vs. audio files. I want to use my Mac Pro for actually writing the music, and then render the files as audio and arrange them on my iMac.
I don't want to get a second monitor, but rather, be able to flip back and forth between my iMac and my Mac Pro on the same screen, relatively quickly. I'm not sure if Spaces has this capability, ie. using one desktop that corresponds to the iMac and one desktop that corresponds to the Mac Pro, all on the iMac's screen.
Is this even possible or does the iMac not even have the capability of accepting a video signal from my Mac Pro?

If you Mac Pro has a mini display port out, then the iMac can be used as a monior for the Mac Pro. This is from the apples support document:
To use a 27-inch iMac in Target Display mode with another computer as the source:
    1. Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
    2. Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort cable to the Mini DisplayPort on each computer. The 27-inch iMac will enter Target Display mode and display content from the source computer.
Note: If you are connecting two 27-inch iMacs, connect a Mini DisplayPort cable to each computer and press Command + F2 on the 27-inch iMac keyboard that you will use as an external display.
    3. To leave Target Display mode, press Command + F2 on the keyboard of the 27-inch iMac that is in Target Display mode. To return to Target Display mode, press Command + F2 again.

  • Can I use this USB 2.0 card in my mac pro?

I have a brand new Belkin USB 2.0 5 port PCI card that says its compatible with MAC
I have a mac pro 2.8 8 core and i need to add mroe USB ports. However it says the card is PCI and i don't want to put it in if its not going to work, or not work well
can you guys let me know what i should do?
    thanks

Considering that two people have had nothing but trouble with Belkin USB hubs (one G5, other was Mac Pro) I'd exchange it when you do for another brand, not that their PCIe won't work, just lately a poor track record perhaps.

  • Can I use a PowerMac G4 Power Cable on a Mac Pro?

    Hello,
I got a Mac Pro 1,1 (1st Generation from 2006) and I don't have a power cable with it. I do, however have a PowerMac G4 with the same sized cable.  Would I be able to safely use the PowerMac G4 Cable with the Mac Pro?
    Cheers,
    Adam

Not a problem, the cables are rated for much more power than the machines will draw so they are interchangeable.  Any computer cable with the same three-prong connection will work.

  • Adding 1TB or 1.5TB SATA drives to Mac Pro?

When I ordered my Mac Pro the largest hard drive that could be ordered from Apple when configuring was 500GB. Up to 4 of them.
I was wondering if I were to pick up a 1TB or 1.5TB SATA internal 3.5" drive, would it work with my Mac Pro?
I know that "back in the days" of IDE drives, that a motherboards and IDE controllers had a limit to how big of a harddrive they could handle. For example, my old Dual G4 MDD model could only hand 120GB drives, anything over that wouldn't work.
    Thanks in advance!
    Phil

When I bought my Mac Pro the largest drive I could order was 750G. I've swapped them out and now use 2TB WD Caviar Green SATA 3Gb s Internal Hard Drives. I've had no problems whatsoever and have never had a problem with an internal drive. OTOH, I won't buy Lacie external drives for they've proven to be just bad hardware and stay away from MyBook hard drives. For external hard drives then, BAM, go with the Drobo External Hard Drive Bundle (an external enclosure). It offer four drive bays just like the Mac Pro. Drobo utilizes a revolutionary storage technology that makes it simple for anyone to use, yet is powerful enough for business. Once you experience the power of Drobo, the idea of keeping multiple external drives or a RAID 5 array will seem as antiquated as that 28.8Kbps modem in the back of your closet.
You can load it up with 8 - 2TB WD Caviar Green SATA 3Gb s Internal Hard Drives for a total of 16TB ( 8 internal, 8 external) and not have to worry about backups or space for a few years. The Drobo monitors the external drives and should anyone begin to show a problem or signs of failure, will quickly warn you and shift the data to empty space on any of the other drives allowing you to replace the failed drive.

  • Can anyone suggest best 500 GB external hard drive for MAC PRO?

Genius Bar rep told me to back up hard drive before delving into whirring tower... Any suggestions for a 500 GB automatic external hard drive? I've researched several, but they all seem to have drawbacks. Reliability and a quiet fan are priorities. Thanks.

Thanks so much for sharing that. Just talked to Apple support .... MAC PRO apparently has 4 slots for drives, and they would be covered under the Apple Protection Plan. With Leopard, they could be set to back up automatically. Thx again!

Can I use ICloud as a complete backup for my Mac Pro? Word Files, PDFs, Excel etc>?

No.  iCloud is not a general file/document storage service.  There are some alternative cloud-based services that provide this listed on Roger Wilmut's site here: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/missing/inicloud3.html.
