Can I use a deskotp hard drive to back up a network hard drive, using time machine?

I have a WD desktop hard drive and a WD network hard drive. I use the desktop drive to backup two computers using time machine and the network drive to store shared information. I wanted to use the desktop hard drive to also back up this shared information on the network drive.
Any way of doing this?

Sorry, no. I've only used CCC, but I don't know if will actually back up a NAS drive.
I kind of thought a network storage device would come with some sort of built-in back up system.

I bought a 1T external hard drive today for my MacBookPro with the intentions of backing up my iPhoto library, and then deleting it to make more space on my hard drive.
I also tried and failed to install Time Capsule because my Verizon modem won't let Time Capsule run with it unless I use Time Capsule as my wireless.
That said, I want to back up my computer, and even though I copied my iPhoto library already, I have plenty of space to do a Time Machine backup as well.
Is this something I can do? Please let me know. After two hours on the phone with Apple only to learn Time Capsule was a waste of money, I'm hoping I don't need to buy another external HD yet…

If you want to use the drive for both TimeMachine and storage, attach the drive and then open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Choose the new hard drive from the left sidebar, and then in the main panel choose Partition.
Choose the number of partitions to be two. Click the first partition and change the size if you do not want the default half of the drive. Name the partition (such as Backups), then accept the default format Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and the partition table as GUID. Click Apply and confirm you want to erase the drive.
Then do the same for the second partition, but of course, give it a different name.
When finished Quit Disk Utility.
Turn ON TimeMachine in System Preferences and direct it to your backup partition.

Tried to install OS X and it says OS X could not be installed. File system or resist failed. Quit installer to restart and try again. It keeps me I a circle. How can I truly quit the install and go back to where I was. My time machine not working

i am in a loop. I can't get past this point OS X could not be installed on your computer. when I go to quit the installer I get are you sure you want to quit OS X installer? To quit, click choose startup disk to select a startup diskbfor your computer if you need to restart click restart. I don't have a start up disk and my time machine evidently isn't workig either. iOS cannot run on any Mac computer, just Apple's mobile devices. You have some version of Mac OS X. To find it, please do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and post what you find along wiuth the processor description.
Some iMacs cannot run newer versions of the Mac OX. That's why we need more info about your specific model. Now that you have the serial number, enter it into the Apple support page to get it translated into a model type:

Or you can simply use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the drive to the backup:

Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk.

When you import images or create other data files, file them in the appropriate places on your internal drive, don't delete them and let Time machine back them up.

Whether or not you are able to recover the data off the drive yourself will depend on if the drive suffered any impact damage in the crash. You can buy USB SATA or IDE adapters (Intel and almost all G5 use SATA) that will let you connect your hard drive to a computer (like a flash drive) to see if you can recover the data. If the drive has suffered physical damage if may not mount.
If you know someone who has one of these adapters you could try using theirs, otherwise you could buy one but you take the risk of the data on the drive being non recoverable. Regardless, both are much cheaper than $1699!
(Alternatively, if you know of someone with a Mac Pro or PowerMac G5 they may be able to install the drive in their machine and try to boot from or mount it and copy the data off.)

I have gone into Disc Utility to repair disc, and get the message: Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found. I was trying to follow Melophage's instructions by going into "Terminal" and entering "diskutil list; diskutil cs list; mount" and "diskutil info disk2." have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference with the heat?

Time Machine... WILL NOT BACKUP an INCLUDED hard drive but backs up an INCLUDED external drive

I have read Mr Pondini's excellent posts... followed them carefully but still in trouble...
The System preferences for Time Machine.... indicate that a full backup..approx . 760 Gigs is being done ( part from an external drive. and part from the Hard ( approx 450Gigs )drive ( approx 270 gigs )...
The External drive backs up.... With Time machine..... and then Skips the Hard drive although is was NOT EXCLUDED in the TM preferences...
I have deleted the plist several times,.... Formatted the Time machine drive several times.... ( renaming the partition each time.... and am at a loss

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

Repartitioning a single drive from 2 partitions to 1 while maintaining a Time Machine backup

This is a bit of a quirky situation and I had a very difficult time finding the right search terms to bring me anywhere close to an answer. I still don't have one.
So here's the situation: I have an iMac hooked up to a 1TB external HDD via FireWire. Previously I had the HDD partitioned into 1 500GB partition for Time Machine and 1 1500GB partition for media files. I have since decided to move all my media back onto my internal HDD and would like to repartition the entire external HDD for use with Time Machine (as I will now have Time Machine backing up many of these media files as well) but I don't want to lose my existing backup history. I've seen the instructions for moving a Time Machine backup from one drive to another but how do I move a Time Machine backup off of an external HDD, reformat said drive from 2 partitions to 1, and move the backup back to it without disrupting the hard links?

Copying it to your internal HD will take a long time, if there's room for it; and emptying the trash after deleting it will take an extremely long time, and likely result in permissions and/or locked file problems.
If you do have to copy the Backups.backupdb folder, copy it only to a separate partition so you can just erase it when done.

Use Find Any File, if the old messages might have been in a specific mailbox, to look for a file by the name of the mailbox to see if there are any larger versions of that mailbox.

If your Mail is indeed gone, you may be able to recover it with one of the data recovery tools here:

But act quickly. Every action while the computer is turned on weakens its chances of recovery. There is a slim chance also your email provider may have tape backup from before you checked your messages and after it arrived at their server for certain messages. You may want to ask them if that might have happened.

You can do this. If you did an OS X Mountain Lion clean install, it will ask you to restore a backup, so connect a Time Machine disk and restore that
