Can I use a flash drive to run a virucide on a HP Notebook Mini 110?

My niece's HP Mini 119 1025DX notebook got infected with a false virucide program emulating MS Safety Essentials. As soon as the WinXP loads it displays itself. It has hijacked the computer and there is no access to the web or to restore the computer. She is a student and does not have a lot of money to fix it.
I can download the Malwarebytes software but there's no CD drive on the notebook to install it.  HELP!!!!

Hi:
You can make a flash drive bootable and have the DOS files to run some commands, but whether or not it will work all depends on whether you can access the software's launch command from a DOS prompt. And you would need to know what that command is, like Setup.exe or whatever.
Here is a link on how to make a flash drive bootable and the applicable files.

If you can't get the program to run from a flash drive, you will have to obtain an external USB DVD-RW drive and run the disk using that.
I use the free Kapersky rescue disk to get rid of that particular malware.

  • HT1751 I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I use a Flash Drive to do so?

I need to uninstall and reinstall iTunes (it won't let me update). I have IE 8 on Windows XP, and iTunes 10 something. In my Program files list I see iTunes and iTunes (2) and even iPod and iPod (2) where a tech had to back up and do this for me before. I'm just trying to fix it all. I keep getting the "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'iTunes.msi' in the box below." I can even run a search and find the folder, but it gives me the same error message. I was planning on using the Microsoft Fix-It tool  to help uninstall then Reinstall iTunes. But I need to backup my library. So, how do I copy or back up my iTunes library of over 1,500 songs? Can I copy the folder to desktop or can I use a Flash Drive to backup my music? I don't want to do anything until I know for sure how I can backup my songs, and then reinstall them into iTunes. Thanks for any help.

Ok, thanks that helps. I don't have an external hard drive though. What about backing up through 'the cloud'? I'm just wondering since my husband syncs his iPod to the PC through iTunes and he's worried that he will lose all the songs on his iPod if the library is lost from iTunes and he tries to 'sync' it up again. I'm not exactly sure how to  'copy the entire iTunes folder' either. I kinda suck at this unless I have step by step instructions, which I haven't found yet on iTunes help or other sources.
The only way I know how to back anything up is by going back to a restore point, etc. (as stated before, we don't have an external hard drive.)
    Thanks for the info.

  • Can I use a flash drive to back up my iTunes?

Did a search on backing up my iTunes, and only get the option of backing up to a disc (Which is what I've done over the past 3 years. I now have 6 discs accumulated).
Can I use a flash drive to back up my apps, music, and videos?
I only have a total of 1.6 GB of apps, music, & video.
If so, would I then be able to transfer everything from the flash to a new hard drive when I replace the current one?
Thanks for any advice or help.

The backup built into iTunes works only with CDs and DVDs, but you can back up onto a flash drive or hard drive manually. Just drag the entire iTunes folder (normally in your user's Music folder) onto the backup device.
would I then be able to transfer everything from the flash to a new hard drive when I replace the current one?
Yes. If you back up the entire iTunes folder, you should be able to just copy it back to the new drive in the same location (user -> Music folder).

  • Can I use a flash drive in my DV6-1320SD?

Can I use a flash drive  in my DV6-1320SD?
And if so, what specs do I need to look for?
As far as I know, a flash drive is additional to the existing hard drive, not a replacement. Could you keep the old hard drive as a seperate data drive, inside the laptop, and work from the flash drive?

Not the way you are thinking. Your model is a generation behind the laptops that have a place for a miniature solid state drive. The only "flash" (solid state) drive you can use is one that is the same size and connection as a regular laptop hard drive (2.5 inch SATA) and it would replace, not be in addition to, the regular hard drive. Having said that, the price of solid state drives is just now becoming somewhat reasonable and the performance gains have to be seen to be appreciated.
Post back if you want to explore buying, installing and loading software on a solid state drive.

  • Can I use a flash drive with my iPad?  If yes, what kind?

Can I use a flash drive with my iPad?  If yes, what kind?

Actually, and to clarify, the Lightning to sd card camera reader does not have a usb port in any shape.
The Lightning to usb camera adapter is the one that has the USB port. (its an entirely different product)
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD821ZM/A/lightning-to-usb-camera-adapter?fnod e=3a
The old 30 pin Camera connection kit, had a USB port adapter as well as the sd card reader in the same package.
In any case, if the iPad you bought is an iPad 4, then no you{ll need to decide if you want an Sd card reader or the actual USB port.
If its an iPad 2 then the camera connection kit will offer the usb port in the box.
However as was already mentioned, and with either product you can only transfer pictures in a very specific format.

  • Can you use a hard drive to run bootcamp off it and also use it as a time capsule?

    Hello,
i'm running out of space on my macbook air, so i was woundering if i could buy a portable hard drvie and use it for storage as well as to run bootcamp off it and use windows 8. But then will I be able to also use it as general storage?

    lauren_gibb wrote:

You mean Time Machine.. Yes, you can use an external drive for TM.. but you cannot use TM to backup the Windows partition. Use a windows software for that. You can use TM to a partition on the external drive for backup of the internal drive of the Air.
The partition has to be formatted HFS+ to work.
And it should be separate to the main partition you are using to boot to win8.. although I am not sure of all the details of that. As I have lots of windows computers around me do never dual boot a machine.

  • Can't access usb flash drive while running a Linux OS

    Hello,
I'm a student taking a UNIX class at a local university.  I downloaded required Linux software for my class, called Knoppix version 4.0.2, on my Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5895.  The program runs fine but I cannot save the script I create to my usb flash drive.  The flash drive is a 4Gb Sandisk.  The light comes on the flash drive when plugged in but no icon is displayed on my desktop and the Knoppix OS won't recognize the flash drive.
I've discussed this problem with my Instructor and he can't identify what's causing the problem.  I've ran the Knoppix software on a friend's computer and it runs and recognizes my flash drive fine.  So the disk is good.  I've searched on the Internet and have had no luck discovering a solution.  I'm thinking now the problem could be with my processor, AMD Turion 64 X2.  But, I've been reading online, other computer users with an AMD Turion 64 X2 are having no trouble running Knoppix OS.  Below are the Knoppix system requirements and what is loaded on my computer.
    Knoppix system requirements:
    Intel processor (i486 or later)
32 MB of RAM for text mode, 64 MB for graphics mode
    Bootable CD-ROM drive
    Standard SVGA compatible graphics card
    Serial or PS/2 standard mouse
    My system:
    Toshiba Satellite L305-S5895
    Model: PSLC0U-01S01F
Processor: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 2.00 GHz
    3.00 GB RAM
    32-bit operating system
Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2
Please give advice on what you think could be my problem.
    Thank you,
    Bradley

Try to manually mount it via Terminal.
Open Terminal and runs this command.
    >sudo /sbin/fdisk/ -l
That should list the available disks. They will be sda1, sda2, sda3, sdb, ect. Usually the USB will be sdb if you don't have a second hard drive.
    Now run this command.
    >sudo mount /dev/sd*
Replace * with what the USB is.
    That should mount your USB

  • Can I create MacOS on flash drive to run broken Imac?

So I've got an Imac that's all brokedy. Won't start up. I tried reinstalling Snow Leopard 10.6.7 on it from a boot disk, but got referred to Disk Utility. Disk Utility told me that the GB 500 drive was so fricked up that Disk Utility can't do a thing with it, I have to take it to a repair shop. But the Apple MacIntosh HD that's INSIDE the GB500 drive checks out OK according to Disk Utility.
It occurred to me that I could maybe install the Snow Leopard software into a flash drive and run the computer off of it, accessing the data and software on the MacIntosh HD via the flash drive, and at least being able to salvage important files that way. I'll need at least a 16 Gig flahs drive for that, no biggie, but my question is: is this feasible or some mad fantasy I've created out of an absurd desire not to get my wallet hijacked by Apple?

I think you'll find that your Hard Drive is failing, I hope you have some form of backup.
Your idea of creating a bootable flash drive could work but it will be useless if your HDD fails which according to your SMART status could happen soon.
I would make a full backup of your hard drive onto an external hard drive using Time Machine or another preferred backup method.
Then I would look into replacing the drive by myself or taking it to an Apple Store.
    Good Luck!

  • Why can't a mac ipad use a flash drive or cd burner

Please.   let me know why ipad doesn't have ability yo use a flash drive or CD burner.

The iPad doesn't have a file manager - like Finder or 'my computer' that allows the use of such devices.
It likely will never support any sort of optical drive - heck within the next few years I'm wiling to bet cd readers/burners go the way of the floppy drive (likely as soon as the record and video industry goes the way of distribution via USB key). But there are some apps and wireless flash drives that work with iPads - they have an app that takes the place of a file manager.
Look for sandisk wireelss flash drive, to just name one. I have no experience with them but there are a couple of users here that have them and recommend it a lot.

  • Using A Flash Drive To Boost RAM

Hey all, I have several questions here. I do sound recordings with my Mac G4 Quicksilver, and need to do some upgrades to run different software. I currently have 10.3.9 but need to go as advanced as I can??? Please forgive my lack of knowlegde when it comes to computers... I catch on fast, but I really don't know much currently. I'm looking at purchasing a 1.8GHz processor to upgrade from 800, and as far as I know my RAM is maxed out at 1.5GB. My computer also doesn't have a DVD drive.
Question 2: My system as far as I know is maxed out on available RAM, all three slots have a 512MB, totaling 1.5GB or so. On Windows, particularly Vista, you can plug in a 4GB flash drive, and with a few clicks, utilize the 4GB for RAM. I've purchased a 4GB flash drive through Ramjet, with this hope in mind. Is there any way to boost the RAM on my Mac by using this flash drive? Are there any other ways of boosting the RAM?

    SoundMind76:

Your RAM is, indeed, maxxed out. That is as much as the QuickSilver will support. However, it will be plenty enough to support Tiger, and even Leopard, if your processor upgrade allows the installation of Leopard. As noted by earlier posters, you cannot use a USB flashdrive as RAM. Here are the technical specifications for Leopard and the minimum system requirements for Tiger.

I am not familiar with the processor upgrade to which you refer, but if you can do that it will give you a very powerful computer. The processing speed comes from the processor, and RAM and a minimum of 15 GB available disk capacity (free space) will improve efficiency.

I thought that installation through Boot Camp required, without hacks, a physical optical disc to install Boot Camp? I don't use it any longer since I run XP under Parallels, but I would swear that you have to use a disc, and not a USB thumb drive, to install Windows?
Maybe some real Boot Campers will visit this thread...

If you have the Media you can use it to create a bootable USB key via boot camp assistant.
It will create the usb and has the option of pre-downlading the drivers and bootcamp utilities for windows.
It is pretty much all automated and quite simple.

Flash is not available on iPad. Apple doesn't allow it. You need to use whatever app they may provide to that end or use the normal web interface.
