Can I use a G3 iMac hard drive as an external on my Macbook?

Hopefully this didn't post twice, the forum is giving me problems when I hit post. So sorry if this is posted twice.
Does anybody know if I would be able to use the internal hard drive on my G3 iMac (333mhz, OS 8.6) as an external on my late 2009 MacBook? Actually, all I really want are some of the files and pictures off my iMac. So it would only be used to transfer the data. But I'm afraid that since it's still 8.6, the MacBook wouldn't be able to read it.
I booted my iMac up to give it a little exercise today and I've got some "zaps," so to speak, going across the screen. The last time this happened, the power supply went. They seemed to be happening a few minutes apart. So I don't have much time and I really don't want to cough up the money for a new power supply (if I could even find one). I don't think the iMac will survive the time it takes to transfer the data to my back up external for my MacBook. I specifically bought this external because it works with 8.6, but I didn't realize until after the fact that I had to format it using 8.6. So I'd have to go through reformatting to get the data onto the drive. Like I said above, I don't think I have that much time left on this power supply.
Any help would be appreciated. I tried the networking thing, but I couldn't get the computers to see each other.

I was wondering whether it's ok to use my imac's drive as an external hd for my new macbook.
You see, my imac had some trouble with the power supply and i decided not to fix it. Instead, I took out the drive and put it in a case so to use as an external for my new machine. The thing is, that drive is the operating drive of my imac, so it has everything on. (Appz, Library, Utilities, Operating system- i suppose).
I only need documents such as pictures/videos/mp3s etc on that drive. All the rest I have with my new drive.
What's the best thing to do?
Keep using it as it is?
Transfer the documents i want to save and format the drive?
Something else?

How can I share my entire iMac hard drive over a network to my Macbook Pro?

I tried setting up a network, and I was able to successfully transfer a couple of files...but some files just wont transfer to my Macbook when I try to transfer them.
What gives? It tells me on certain files that I cannot get them because I dont have correct permissions. When I command-I to get the folder/file info...I'm not even able to change priviledges to "READ & WRITE". "READ" is the only option available.
Can someone please point out what Im missing? I'm trying to transfer a large amount of files from my imac to macbook pro so that I can sell my iMac. It's not letting me transfer all of them.

Two methods:
1) Log into the other computer using the username of an administrator on that computer
2) Log into the other computer using the username of the account that holds the movies, music, documents, etc.

Yes, but it's not advised because it's placing too many backups into one hardware basket, also it will greatly shorted your TimeMachine states where you can go back in time to undelete a file.
It's better to have two backups, each on seperate hardware of each drive.
So if you have a boot drive and a external drive, you should have a clone drive and TimeMachine drive of the boot drive, and a backup drive of the external drive. (or two depending how valuable the data is)
If you drop a drive, or knock it over while it's running, all the data could be lost.
With only TimeMachine as your backup, if you drop or lose it, or if it gets stolen, it takes two backups with it.
A clone and a backp of the external drive stored safely off site is ideal, update it once a week or bi weekly as needed.
A clone is bootable, and is exactly like your boot drive, up in seconds.
A TimeMachine can only boot to restore to a new drive if your boot drive dies for some reason.

Create a concatenated disk set
Increase storage space with a concatenated RAID set (also called “Just a Bunch of Disks” or JBOD). If you need one large disk, but you have only several smaller disks, you can create a concatenated disk set to use several small disks as one large disk.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select one of the disks that you want in the set, and then click RAID.
Click Add (+), and type a name for the RAID set.
Choose a format from the Format pop-up menu. Usually you’ll choose the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Choose Concatenated Disk Set from the RAID Type pop-up menu.
Drag the disks you want to add to the set to the list on the right.
Click Create.

Note that the biggest CON to concatenated RAID configurations is vulnerability to volume failure. If either disk fails, the whole volume fails. The Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, or similar software. For best results, place the second drive inside the computer or in a FireWire enclosure and boot the computer from it before removing the internal drive.

No, you can't connect an external drive to the iPad - the iPad doesn't have a USB or firewire port and the camera connection kit only supports the transfer of photos and videos into the Photos app. There are some wifi-enabled drives that can be used to stream content to the iPad e.g. Seagate GoFlex Satellite

You will have to buy a new HDD and an enclosure to make the transfer. You can use Disk Utility to make the transfer.
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
2. You will need a HDD enclosure. One with a USB connection will do. A 9 pin Firewire is better.
3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE. From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field. Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'. Click on the 'Erase' button.
5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top). Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination' field. Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more. A Firewire will speed up the transfer. This will result in both drives having identical information on them. INSTALLING
6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives. Start the MBP and you have finished the installation. The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.

I have upgraded my Apple iBook G4 to Mac OS X Leopard and want to take full advantage of all the applications on the OS. I am wondering if it is possible to use a Microsoft Windows PC's hard drive as the medium upon which Time Machine can use to back up my data. I know that external hard drives will work with Time Machine and so will wireless hard drives, such as Time Capsule.
So, would it work if I was to:
1 - Partition the existing C drive in my PC
2 - Share this partitioned C drive on the Network (my PC has wireless card in-built)
3 - Set up Time Machine to recognise this hard disk as a medium which it can use to back up my data
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but if there is a chance I can use a PC's hard drive, especially when the existing PC is hardly ever used, as something which Time Machine can use, then it would make sense to use that then spend money on an external or wireless hard drive.

No. This is not possible on the PC drive without wiping the drive.

Time Machine is only available with Leopard (10.5.x)

3. Drive shared by a Mac running 10.5 or later using File Sharing

A TM drive must be partitioned with either APM (PPC) or GUID (Intel) and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

you should be able to get and external enclosure, install the hadr drive from the old machine inside, then connect to your new computer.

I am a new Mac user and have had my Macbook for about a month now. Everything is working fine and I love it. However, I have been holding off on using my iPod and iTunes with it because my iPod is formatted for a PC. With an AirPort Extreme, the PCs will "see" the HFS+ formatted drive on the network as a FAT32 volume, so there is no need to reformat the drive as FAT32, but the normal limitations of FAT32, like maximum file size of 4 GB, slow transfers, etc. will still apply.

I am not concerned about speed as much as having some kind of external drive to copy clone image to from my MacBook Pro. I know with older Macs you used to have to use Firewire connections for the Macs to boot from the external drives. I thought I saw something that said you now could also use USB. I'm pretty sure my MacBook Pro 17 (June 2009) has USB 2.0 version ports, so should I be able to do this? Yes, hold option booting from USB cloned boot drives work.
Although FireWire 800 is faster as you already know.

Another secret, Mac's can be option/c booted off burned ISO of PartedMagic cd's too.
What's nice about this little gem, the whole Linux operating system loads into RAM and you can copy files from the non-boooting Mac's internal hard drive to a external drive, of nearly ANY format.
You can also burn disks, as the PartedMagic cd spits out after loading.
And you can get on the internet, and do malware scans and a lot of other niffty things.

I don't know what the maximum number of hard drives might be, but I have tested with 4 and it works fine. Time Machine automatically rotates the backups when you do this, so drive #1 will be backed up first, then #2, #3, etc. and then back to #1, etc.

You can't upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive in the Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. It is not supported. Period.

I tried unsuccesfully to upgrade the hard drive in my Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro to a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive. After several attempts with different hard drives I realized that the kernel panic that showed up was due to the lack of compatibility with the drives to the MacBook Pro. I had a Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro that I did not have any issues with whatsoever. I sold that MacBook Pro and was able to upgrade to the brand new base model without any out of pocket cost. Upon purchase of the new 13" MBP I maxed out the RAM to the full 8GB. After 2 months of freezing, lockups, spinning rainbow wheels and having to force shutdown I tried one last ditch effort to see if a faster drive would help. After speaking with the Apple telephone reps and the Apple Store Genius Bar we discovered that Apple doesn't even offer the option of a 7200RPM drive on their website - a fact that I found quite disturbing. The concensus is that it is a power management issue that causes the incompatibility and the reason the drives are not offered on the 13" models. The problems I had were the end of the line for me. I just switched out that train wreck for the Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro base model. I got home and immediately installed the 750 GB 7200RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black hard drive and it was recognized within seconds. I'm back in business with gleeful abandon.

Sadly... they don't have all the answers. As someone who use to serve in the capacity (Mac Genius) it can definitely be a challenging position. You're "the voice" of Apple's service policy & procedures. Sounds like the person you spoke with got it wrong this time. It's definitely worth a follow up, because like I said, I've got a machine in my household that's living proof of compatibility between a 7200 RPM drive and 13" MBP (Early 2011).
Apple is very good about support documentation when there's incompatibility or unsupported configurations, the fact that there isn't one for 7200 RPM drives would tell me that the people/person you spoke with was misinformed.
I know I always appreciated when a customer made it known to me that I was wrong on something and supplied the right answer. I sure as heck don't have all the answers and if I can lead from my mistakes, well, I won't make them anymore.
