Can I use a MacBook like a Mac Mini? How would I power it on?

Is it possible to use a MacBook like a Mac Mini when I'm at home, with it plugged into a monitor? I've seen pictures of people using theirs when the MacBook is closed, but how would you power it on? If it's turned off, can it be powered on with the remote? And if not, how would I turn it on without opening it? I don't much fancy leaving it in sleep mode all the time.

Basically, you have to use sleep mode, either
with a USB keyboard and/or mouse
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86286
or with bluetooth
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1308
You can use the Energy Saver preferences to set up schedules for automated shutdown (at night), startup (in the morning), and sleep (when idle) settings.
If it's powered off, just open the lid and power it up, then close the lid again, or get a laptop stand and use both the built-in display and the external display at the same time in extended desktop mode, if you have the desk space.

    Firewire Interface/mixer
    Firewire camera for FCP

  • I can't use my Philips monitor with Mac mini

I can't use my Philips monitor with Mac mini, I am using a HDMI to VGA cable to connect them. But no signal on my Philips monitor.
My Mac mini is in a good condition, it can connect with my HDTV, the BENQ monitor at my office, but I can't make it connect with my Philips monitor.
    I dun know what happen.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

The two are incompatible, HDMI is a digital signal and VGA is an analog signal. You need a monitor with a HDMI port or a DVI-I port, these are both digital signals. DVI-I gives the best output.

  • Can I use backup from iMac on Mac mini?

My iMac just went into the Apple Store shop today for a new disk drive. I have a cloned backup of it from Super Duper, on an external drive. Is there any way I can boot from that drive on my Mac mini? Thanks.

As long as the version of Mac OS X on the backup drive is the same or newer than what came from the factory installed on the mini it should boot fine.

  • How can I use two displays with my Mac Mini?

  • Can I use a MacBook pro as an external display for a Power Mac G5

My problem is that the Studio display from 2004 is beginning to fail.  What can I use as a replacement display?  It seems that the Thunderbolt displays are out of the question, and some of the other new displays may require an Intel-based OSX.
So, assuming I buy a MacBook Pro in the future, I'd like to continue to keep the Power Mac G5 as a back-up.  Can I use the screen on the MacBook Pro as a display for the Power Mac, and if so, how?

Depending on what you use your computers for, the concept of using the screen of a MacBook as a display for a desktop Power Mac is about as poor an idea as I've heard in a long, long time.
    Thanks for the chuckle.
PS.— There are plenty of inexpensive screens you can use instead.

  • How can I use screen share of my mac mini?  Problems validating

I recently purchased a mac mini to act as my home media server for audio as my airport express was not playing nicely with my Peachtree DAC.  Anyway, I have set up sharing on the mac mini and can't figure out how to connect from my wife's Macbook, or her iPad.  (I use a PC, so would welcome advice if available on how to connect across platforms as well.)  My goal is to set up the mac mini without a monitor or keyboard connected to it and have it sit with our main stereo.
I am able to connect to the mac mini via my wife's macbook IF I ask for permission and I grant it from the mac mini.  However, I am unable to connect no matter what I try if I try to log in as a registered user.  I have tried to add her as a user to the mac mini, I have tried to log in as a guest, and I have tried to log in with a password but no matter what I try, I get an authentication error when I try to log in as an authorized user.  For more clarity, here is what I have tried:
    1.  Added authorized users on the mac mini.  I created a user name for "jeff", "maureen", and "lastname_maureen" on the mac mini and provided a password for each user.  "jeff" and "maureen" are just created on the mac mini, and "lastname_maureen" is the user name of my wife's computer.  I confirmed the passwords, and still am unable to connect.  I have allowed any user on the network to access screen share, and no matter what I do I get an authentication error.  Again, if I attempt to log in from my wife's computer by asking permission, it works fine but I can't figure out how to set up an account to login.  Please help.  Thanks!

  • Can I use my ibook as a mac mini interface?

Hello all, I currently have an ibook G4 2004 , I need to get more hard drive space and need a faster machine to handle some of the more complex applications I've been running. I was wondering if I invested in a mac mini, would I just be able to connect this to myG4 via USB and just use the ibook keyboard and screen to use my mac mini?
I am sure this is all fairly obvious and I'd imagine that this would be possible, would there be any advantages to doing this as opposed to investing in a new system altogether? Any input would be much appreciated.

+wondered If I could just use my laptop as a screen and transfer all the information to the mac mini and run off of the mac mini.+
This question comes up about once a week.
No Mac is designed to replace a monitor and keyboard.
You can, however, connect two Macs with an ethernet cable and using that network connection do screen sharing. But you probably won't like the results for anything except very casual use.
You'd still have to use a real monitor, keyboard, and mouse to setup your new Mini.
Once set up, you'd run a VNC program like Chicken of the VNC on your old Mac, and you'd have Screen Sharing active on your Mini. This would let you control your Mini with the iBook's screen, keyboard, and trackpad.
But as I said, you probably won't like the results. Budget for a monitor.

  • Can I connect my MacBook to my Mac Mini?

I would like to connect my Mac Mini 2 to my MacBook, but am not sure how to do this.  I want to
install software from a disc, and there is no built in hard drive on the Mac Mini 2.

Be certain that the software on that disc is compatible with the operating system you plan to install it too.

  • Can I use install disk from my Mac mini to upgrade OS on my iMac

I’m currently running OS X v.10.5.8 on my iMac. I’d like to update it to OS X 10.6.
I also have a Mac mini that came with 10.6. Can I just use the install disk that came with my Mac mini to install 10.6 on my iMac?

No you can't. The install discs came with the Mac mini are bundled to Mac minis. So when you try to install with the Mac mini install discs, you'll get an error. You have to get the Snow Leopard package for $29 which is free to install on every Mac matching the system requirements.

  • Can't use my apple displays with Mac mini

    Hey everyone,
I've got a pretty strange problem, and I'm hoping you guys know of a solution to this.
Thing is, I can't use any apple displays with my Mac mini box. Whenever I try to do so I can see that the monitors are turned on, but the screen is completely black (doesn't flicker or anything like that). I know for a fact that both of the apple monitors I tried work.
However, monitors from other manufacturers work just fine! This has got me baffled, what is it about apple monitors that's got my Mac so confused ?

It's possible the analog VGA is working on your mini whereas the DVI digital output is broken. They are two completely different interfaces that just happen to share a common connector on the mini.
Can you possibly get your hands on another, non-Apple monitor that has a DVI input? I would say if all three are not working (two Apple monitors and a third-party one), then definitely something is up with the mini's DVI output.

  • Can i use pc laptop monitor for mac mini?

I am going to be out of the country for a year - maybe in Africa, most likely in area not well served by technology.  I have to use PC for work so have a think pad.  I also have an ipad and a mac mini.  I really want to take my mac mini (mm) - it bridges a gap between these two.  It's small enough and I can use my bluetooth keyboard for both ipad and mm.  I can only take a suitcase plus backpack...so I am really not gonna haul a monitor.  Is there a way to use PC laptop as display for mm?  Weird, I know but I can only take so much...
thanks for any help you can give.  cheers

do you think one of these new USB powered mobile monitors (LED/LCD) might work - toshiba and lenovo both have them.  they say they are compatible with any windows computer - but why not mac?
