Can I use a networked external harddisk for TM?

The external hardisk that I want to use is either an internal harddisk and/or an external hardisk connected with an Apple Server on my local network. So it's not connected directly to my MacBook. However, TM cannot "see" these harddisk. Is TM only capable of working with harddisks directly connected to the computer you're backing up? If this isn't the case, I would be grateful for some guidance on how to configure TM? Thanks.

Hi Pondini. I am a bit confused by your reply to this string of posts.
I understand your reply to sky65 that there is an issue with non-apple disk for TM. That's not what I'm attempting to do (as noted in my posts above that sky65 replied to).
My request is to connect to a TM volume that is directly connected to another Mac in the same room as the first Mac (that has another TM volume mounted directly to it).
The FAQ at the top of this forum mentions changing permissions on a file that begins with a "." in the name, but given issues with Apple, etc. that you allude to in your post I'm wondering if this is just a short-term fix OR is it long-term solution.
Here is my original post which was to pvonk's solution posted in these discussion forums.
Dear pvonk,
What you describe in your post is what I'd like to accomplish, however, I'm not understanding how you "mount" the appropriate drive in your scenario.
For example, I can set up a TM drive directly connected to my Intel iMac1. I make sure that this drive is Shared via Sys Prefs, as you outline below. Then, I go to my Intel iMac2 and Connect to the Intel iMac1 (with my Intel iMac1 admin account). I get the Finder window and can "see" the TM drive listed in this window. But I don't see how I "mount" the TM drive from Intel iMac1 on the (desktop) of Intel iMac2 -- the drive does not show up in Disk Utility on Intel iMac2, so I'm not understanding how I mount it to use with iMac2 Time Machine app.
I do notice that I can see the TM drive within Time Machine app on Intel iMac2, but when I choose the TM drive, I get a dialog asking me to login (which I do, again, with the admin account and password for Intel iMac1), but then I get an error message about not having permissions to write a file (that begins with a .)
I noticed that the FAQ says there is a way to change this with Terminal, but you do not talk about having to do any of that work to get your setup to work.
Can you please elaborate?
Thanks,
C Vician

  • Can I use a network hard drive for time machine

Can I use a network drive for my time machine back up.  I currently have a 1TB WD AND its full with mostly videos and other back ups?

Such a configuration is not supported. This does not mean it will not work, but it is not guaranteed to work reliably.
Considering the "mission profile" for a backup strategy, you should consider this an unacceptable application for Time Machine.

There are other, significant concerns regarding sharing a Time Machine volume with other content. Time Machine needs to have control of the whole volume.

  • Can I use the same external hd for time machine and storage without partitioning it?

    Hello,
I have been using an external hard drive for my Time Machine that was only used for this purpose.
I downloaded some files in it that I want to use, and I haven't backed up using Time Machine since.
Can I download the files on my MacBook from the HD without running into any problems, or is there anything else I should do?
I prefer not to partition the hd, since I will be deleting these files, or transferring them to a different HD, and using this HD only for Time Machine back ups, as I did previously.
** I am not sure if this changes anything, but I just updated from Snow Leopard to Lion.
    Thank you so much

Thanks Kappy, I will do that.
I just really needed these files and had no other hard drive to store them.
Do you think that it will be okay just this one time if I download the files on my MacBook without compromising my backups?
I will transfer them to a new hard drive, and erase them from my Time Machine external  hard drive.
For the time being it will be fine. There is always a chance of a disc crashing and therefore not advisable practice. Some here run seperate drives with Time Machine, Cloned backup and file backup. I have a portable drive I keep Time Machine backups and file backups on. I am running that at my own risk, but no problems over the last couple of years. Just make sure I get it to my normal TM Backup disk as soon as I get home. Backing up those other files will not compromise your Time Machine backups as you asked.

  • Can I use an additional external monitor for my mid-2010 MacBook?

I currently run my MacBook in clamshell mode with an external monitor, keyboard, etc.  I have researched usb to VGA or DVI conversion kits but all of the sources seem outdated.  I don't need HDMI because my sound output goes through my MiniPort Display, out through speakers connected to my primary monitor.  I am aware that a usb connection will come with lag, but it isn't that big of a deal.  Thank you for your help!

If I correctly understand you question: you have an external monitor, and you use your mac with lid closed (not a good idea at all if used for a long time, especially in warm/hot weather). Now, you want a second monitor connected via USB.
My small piece of advice is to use your MB with lid open and thus you have two monitors, beside this, you protect your mac by a proper ventilation, which is better when lid is open.

can timecapsule be used as a external harddisk for my mac laptop?

Yes, but it is a poor use of the TC.. it is a backup device that itself is difficult to backup.
It is designed for Time Machine.
You can buy a NAS from other companies that includes media players and Time Machine extensions to do more, faster than the TC.

Siri does Not work on the iPad 2.  iOS 7 is not even out yet, so we have no way of knowing if you'll be able to upgrade to it.

  • How can I use Guest network when my internal server provides the DNS?

How can I use guest network when my internal server provides the DNS? The help article TS4505 tells me to enter an external DNS server, but I believe I can not configure my network that way...

Apple assumes that you will be connecting the Time Capsule to a simple modem....and.....that the Time Capsule is configured as a router to provide DHCP and NAT services for the network.
The Guest Network cannot be enabled correctly unless the Time Capsule is in charge of DHCP and NAT services on the network.
Another way of saying the same thing is that the Guest Network will not operate correctly if the  Time Capsule is configured in Bridge Mode or DHCP Only.

No, it is not a storage solution as if you need to get the things off it you can't. If you deete things from iTunes they'll delete at the next sync. Provided you have backup copie on an external drive or CD/DVD, you could delete the actual file from the Finder leaving the database entry in iTunes - in this way you free space on the laptop but files stay on AppleTV.
An alternative would be to change itunes Preferences (Advanced tab) not to import into the library, then for things you don't want on the Macbook Air, have them on external drive, drag and drop to itunes, sync, then disconnect drive for portable use. Again when the files aren't available they won't be deleted, unless you delete the itunes database reference.

    n is faster.
3-What is the best external drive that might fit my need?
Your options are basically small portable drives most of which are USB powered (though may require powered hubs if you have a hub) or larger desktop externals requiring power adapter and more space.
For value the desktop externals give more capacity per pound/dollar, and will also have bigger capacity maximums at a given time (bigger and bigger capacity discs being developed all the time).
Try and work out the capacity/pro
ice point and if a portable might be useful, then you have a variety of option.
Peronally I like Western Digital, Seagate and Freecom models, but they're all fairly good these days, and even popular brands can fail. I avoid Maxtor and IBM/Hitachi having had failures in the past, but all drives eventually fail.

Can a use a partitioned external hard drive to create a disk image? I tried, doesn't seem to work using disk manager.

OK, it's very bad computing to use a backup disk for anything but a backup. The reason being is if/when the HD crashes you will have lost not only all your backup but the data files. While I commend you for wanting redundant backup, you really need separate EHDs for doing so. Format each EHD using Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID parttition. When you connect, OS X will ask if you want to use that drive as a Time Machine backup drive, select yes and then let it backup. On the second EHD format the same way however do not use TM as a backup, this time I'd suggest an app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of the internal HD. Leave both EHDs connected and TM will backup new or changed files automatically on a hourly basis. The clone you will need to set to backup on the schedule you want. For example I have my SuperDuper EHD set to backup only changed or updated files at 2AM every day.
The advantage of a clone is that if the computers internal HD crashes you can boot from a clone and continue working, TM will not do that but it's great for keeping an archive of all files. So if you want a version of a file from many months ago, TM will help you locate and restore it.

  • Time Machine: Can I use a smaller external hard drive with larger internal?

Can I use a 250G external hard drive with and 500G unfilled internal drive with time machine? Or will time machine require I a 500G? I don't plan on filling the internal drive for a long time and don't want to buy a new external drive right now.

Yes, but you are very likely to get in trouble very quickly.
The problem is that TimeMachine saves multiple versions of any file modified, and if that file happens to be large, you can quickly fill up your TimeMachine drive such that it is throwing away older versions faster than you would desire.
Also if your boot drive's storage usage gets even close to the 250GB external drive's capacity, TimeMachine is likely to stop working.
If possible, I would suggest an external drive that is twice as large as your boot drive, or at least 1.5 times larger.
I guess you could repartition your boot drive so it is smaller than your external disk so you would be less likely to use more space than could fit on the external.
Personally, my opinion about backups is that much of my data is impossible to replace (family pictures, etc...), and spending money on backup hardware is a small price to pay for securing those memories. I also try to have it backup in more than one location in more than one way.

  • Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup my Mac Mini (256gbSSD + 2tbHDD)?

Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup what I have on my Mac Mini?
My Mac Mini has one 256 SSD and one 2tb HDD. I want to use Time Machine to do a backup of everything.
Would an external 2tb My Passport Drive by Western Digital work for the backup?
It seems like it would not work because the total storage on the Mac Mini is 2304 gigabytes (SSD + HDD).
And the external Western Digital drive is only 2048 in gigabytes versus 2304 gigabytes the Mac Mini has.

No. A Time Machine backup drive should have at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. You would need at least a 4 TB backup drive for Time Machine.
Might I suggest as an alternative that you not use Time Machine but a third-party backup utility that simply overwrites older files with new ones such that the backup drive can be the same capacity as the drive backed up.

  • Can I use a MBA external DVD in a vertical orientation?

Can I use a MBA external DVD in a vertical orientation? Will the drive be damaged in the long run?

The vertical orientation won't damage the drive.  The only real concern is for discs in the drive.  In general there should not be any problem as long as the drive isn't being jostled during use.  So you should be OK using it that way.  If you find that the drive isn't reading/writing discs properly then try using it horizontally to see if that fixes things.
