Can I use a US spec iMac in the UK?

Hi everyone, this is my first post here so please forgive me if I sound ignorant. I will be vacationing in the US during the summer and am tempted to purchase an iMac while I am there. The reason is quite simple, price. In the US a basic iMac would cost me $1199.00 USD which is approx £750GBP at todays exchange rate and approx £40GBP in excess baggage fees on the flight back home. The cost of the same spec UK model is £999.00 GBP so therefore I am saving £200 GBP (approx $320USD). Now this might not sound a lot but £100 is £100 and it's better off in my pocket!! As far as I can ascertain, there should not be a problem with the voltage as it states on Apples' website, that the operating voltage is between 100vac and 240vac but what I would like to know is 1) Is it really worth the hassle of taking an expensive bulky computer onto a plane (hopefully not getting damaged by clumsy baggage handlers in the process) to save £200 and 2) Is the Apple warranty valid in the UK for a piece of kit that was purchased in the US? Any advice would be gratefully recieved,
Thanks
Pat

The iMac will work fine in the UK.  All you need is a UK/US plug adaptor.
You will likely need to pay tax on top of the US quoted price as it is normally quoted without tax..  In the UK you will also have to pay import duty + VAT as you will be well in excess of the duty free allowance.  See the HMRC guidelines.
When you consider these fees plus the excess baggage charge it may not end up saving you all that much, and, as you say there is the risk of damage during baggage handling.

  • Can I use my european 2009 iMac in the US?

I am moving from Israel to the US.
I read that you can use your iMac in any country as long as you have an adapter or a local iMac cable. Is this true for older versions of the iMac?
I purchased mine in 2009. the model identifier is iMac10,1.
Would it be possible for me to use my mac in the US with an adapter? Will I need to change something in my settings or hardware?
Thank you very much to whoever replys!!!

Forgot to say, no changes in settings are needed.
If you want to find a US power cord, you can try any computer/electronics supply here, such as Radio Shack, MicroCenter, Fry's...all carry standard computer power cords that will work with the iMac.

unless you have one of the latest models of an imac g4 with usb 2.0 i would suggest a firewire burner instead. they're a little harder to find but they're still out there.

  • Can I use an airport extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem

Can I use an Airport Extreme to extend the range of my wireless modem?
At one end of my house I have a dual band wireless ADSL modem which provides my internet connection and I want to extend (improve) the wireless coverage to the other of the hosue where my Apple TV (2nd gen) is located. I have being trying to extend my wireless network with an Airport Extreme but so far without success. I can get the Airport to join the wireless network, but I suspect that it is only acting as another client and not actually extending the wireless range. There is a setting in the Airport configuration to "extend and existing network", however when I choose this option the Airport no longer connects to my existing wireless network and I am beginning to suspect that this fuction only works with another Apple device (Airport Extreme or Express).
Has anyone been able to extend the range of a third party wireless router / modem with an AirPort Extreme? If so, any advice that you can offer wold be appreciated.
    Regards
    Michael

    Thanks Tesserax,
Your answer has confirmed my suspicions.
Option 1 from your suggested solutions is not a goer because the modem and Airport Extreme are in different parts of the house making it impractical to run a cable between the two devices.
I did try option 2 and bought a Netgear range extender, which according to Netgear it would work with my D-Link modem - not.
However I have managed to work around the problem (sort of) by using the Airport Extreme to create a wireless network between my iMac 27 and my Apple TV. The idea is that the iMac will act as a router between ethernet connected ADSL modem and the wirelessly connected Apple TV.
The good news is that I am now able to play the content from my iTunes library on my Apple TV without interruptions due to a poor wireless connection . Although the connection from the Apple TV to the internet is not working I think this is most likely just a configuration issue and for me it is not really a show stopper.

  • How can I format my intell based imac without the original Tiger discs? I have a user account on it that I dont want. I have upgraded to Snow Leopard but I want to to star affresh. Thank you.

How can I format my intell based imac without the original Tiger discs? I have a user account on it that I dont want. I have upgraded to Snow Leopard but I want to to start affresh. Thank you. I have tried loading the Snow Leopard disc whilst holding down th C key but it goes straight into install mode. I am new to Macs and I have inherited this machine.

    Hello, many options...
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
    Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.
