Can I use an additional airport express to extend my wifi network

Hi,
I have an airport express running my wifi network but I have black areas in farthest away areas. If I buy a further express would that extend my network ? If so what would I need to do !
Tnx

Hi Matt
Thanks for reply - my speed is already poor - what would be a better solution ?
Tnx again

Tried to use my two airport express to extend my wifi network on a windows pc but no success

My two airport express base stations are 802.11n and i am triying to use them extend my wireless network which is using a D link wirless router as supplied my my ISP connected to TalkTalk network.
Unless the D-Link wireless router has Ethernet ports for each of the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn) to connect to, they will NOT be able to extend the wireless range of the D-Link.
Instead, when directly connected and reconfigured for a roaming network, these base stations CAN extend the range.
Please check out this Apple Support article on how to use AirPorts to extend a wireless network.
The key is to have both AXns configured as follows:
    As a bridge.
Each having a unique Base Station Name.
Both using the same Network Name (or SSID), wireless security type and password as the D-Link.
Each AXn to use a channel at least 3-5 channels apart both from each other and that of the D-Link.

  • Can I use an old Airport Express to extend the range of a new Airport Express?

Hi all.  I have an old Airport Express 802.11g (First Gen?) that is starting to fade.  Still works, but not what it used to be.  So I am going to buy a new Airport Express.  I'm not interested in the Airport Extreme.
Question:  If I use the new Airport Express as my main wireless router, can I plug my old Airport Express into another room as an extender?  In other words, with the old Express and the new Express talk to each other or will a new Express only allow extension with another new Express?
    Thanks!

Sorry, but the old AirPort Express 802.11 b/g does not have a setting to "Extend a wireless network", so it cannot be used as a extender with the newer AirPort Express if you plan to connect wirelessly.
If you plan to connect the older Express using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then it could be configured to provide additional wireless signal coverage in that manner.

  • HT4260 Can I use a new airport express to extend a network?

If I am using an AirPort Extreme as my main wifi, but it is in bridge mode because I already have another router setup in dhcp on my network, can I use an airport express to extend my network, but use it hard wired?

can I use an airport express to extend my network, but use it hard wired?
Yes, assuming that you are asking about a new Express, or the 802.11n version.
This is very easy to do with the Mountain Lion operating system that you have.
(The "roaming network" link above assumes that you are using the Leopard or Snow Leopard operating system...although the general information there is good).
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express.
Power up the AirPort Express and wait a full minute
Click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and look for the heading of New AirPort Base Station. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express there
AirPort Setup will open automatically and take a minute to analyze your network and then announce that the Express will be setup to "extend" your AirPort Extreme network
Enter a device name for the Express and click Next
AirPort Setup will take another minute to configure the Express
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
    That's it.

  • Can I use a 2nd Airport Express to extend signal?

I have the AirPort Express 2nd gen.  I play music via my iPhone & iPad when I am "in range" with the AirPort Express thru my home music system.
If I go outside, my iPhone drops the signal and music stops.  My iPad on the other hand has a stronger signal and the music plays on in the same location.
Can I purchase a 2nd AirPort Express and use it as a wifi extender or range extender to increase the distance of my wifi signal?
Or, can I use any wifi router to accomplish this?
I'd like to stay all Apple, if possible, as mixing Apples and Oranges is not good.
If so, can someone please tell me how to set this up?
Thank you all for your valuable assistance.

The AirPort Express 2008 "extender" is about 80 feet away from the AirPort Express 2012 (new) model.  Is this too far to get a good signal?
Wireless performance is affected by "interference".  If you have a clear, line-of-sight path between the AirPort devices, then 80 feet may not be too great of a distance.
But, if there are walls or ceilings or other obstructions in the signal path that "interfere" with the wireless signal, the distance that the signal can travel and maintain decent signal strength and speed is dramatically affected.
On average, a typical wall (sheetrock and 2 by 4s) in a home will absorb anywhere from 10-20% of the signal.  As you might imagine, a ceiling will absorb even more of the signal since it is thicker and more dense than a wall.
Heavy furniture, large mirrors (a mirror has a metal backing) will really slow down and absorb the wireless signal as well.
If the wireless signal must pass through multiple walls, or a ceiling and a few walls, not much of the signal will get through.....even if the distance might be only 20-30 feet between the AirPort devices.

  • I have a DLINK 524 150 and bought recently an airport express to extend my WIFI network. I tried by many ways to get the connection but it was impossibble. If possible, what is the necessary setup and orientation I have to follow ?

In have a DLINK 524 and bought recently (march/2013) an airport express to extend my WI-Fi network. I triedmany ways to get the connection but it was impossible. Is really possible to get this connection ? If it is, what is the necessary setup and orientations that I have to follow ?
    Thanks

Apple designed their "extend" feature as a proprietary function to work with other Apple routers, so it's extremely unlikely that the AirPort Express would be able to wirelessly extend your D-Link network.
If you can connect the AirPort Express to the D-Link router using a wired Ethernet connection, the Express can likely be configured to provide more wireless coverage that way.

  • Why can't one of my Airport express stations extend my wireless network?

    Background:
I have an Airport Extreme cabled to my Comcast router.
I have three Airport Express units scattered around my house.
All have worked fine for many months and all are running version 7.6.4.
    Problem:
Recently, one of the Airport Express stations had a yellow, flashing LED and a status of "Extended Network - This Airport base station was unable to extend the wireless network..."
Using Airport Utility, this station displays a connection quality status of "good."
This unit also has the exact same settings as my other two Airport Express units.
Using Airport Utility I instructed the unit to "Ignore" the status, and the LED turned green. But the status of "Extended Network" continues to display.
I've tried a hard reboot of the unit, but nothing changed.
Any suggestions as to how to correct this status?

Thanks for the suggestion, but apparently the culprit was my Airport Extreme.
I swapped the locations of two of my Airport Expresses and the problem replicated. Both had the "Extended Network" status and both showed a red number 1, indicating that a firmware upgrade was available (but no update button appeared). I returned the two Expresses to their original locations. Same situation after they booted.
Then I performed a hard reset of my Airport Extreme. After the reset, all three Airport Expresses now have no special status messages in Airport Utility and all have a connection of "good" or "excellent." Plus, no red number 1's appear (which should only appear if a firmware update was available).
    So, problem solved.

  • If I add an airport express to extend my wifi network, will I lose some of the bandwidth?

I currently have an Airport Extreme, which does a great job, however we are losing some signal at the top of the house. If I add an airport express to the middle floor, will it half the current download speed we are getting, but provide a stronger signal, or does it replicate the same speed?

Adding another base station to extend the wireless network does not directly affect your the download speed provided by your ISP. It will; however, use up some of the overall bandwidth of your wireless network for maintaining that extended network.
When extending a base station will only repeat the bandwidth at which it receives it. That's why it is important to properly place this base station for best overalll bandwidth performance. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for details.

  • Can I use a 2nd Airport Express to bring internet to a wired-only desktop?

    Hi.
I have an Airport Express that's working flawlessly as a wireless router via a cable modem. Problem is, I have a second computer ( a desktop PC) that's too far away from the cable modem to hook it up via the ethernet. Is it possible to use a second Airport Express to extend the wireless network and thereby connect to my desktop with the ethernet cord? I guess this would be kind of using the AE backwards. If this is possible, could you please tell me how I might do it?
    Thanks so much!

Here are the basic steps in setting up a WDS:
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations within near proximity of each other during the set up phase, and then relocate them to their desired locations when complete. Also, jot down the AirPort IDs (not the Ethernet ID) for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS. The AirPort ID and is printed on the label on the bottom/side of the base station.
I suggest that you also perform a "factory default" reset on each of your AXs to get them to their original "out-of-the-box" configuration.
Finally, for this WDS, AX#1 (the AX connected to the Internet modem) will be the main base station, and AX#2 will be the remote base station.)
Main Base Station Setup - AX#1
o On your MacBook Pro (MBP) click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by AX#1.
o Open AirPort Utility (located in the /Applications/Utilities folder).
o Select AX#1, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then, choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS, and then, choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox.
o Click the Add "+" button, and then, enter the AirPort ID of AX#2.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - AX#2
o On the MBP click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar, and then, choose the wireless network created by AX#2.
o Open AirPort Utility if not already running.
o Select AX#2, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS, and then, choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of AX#1.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.

i have an airport extreme attached to cable, then one airport express to extend the range. when i try to add an additional airport express to extend range in another area of house, can't get it to work. utility says it has found a new base station and asks if i want to use it. if i click yes, then the old setup is disabled.

Ok, thanks for clarifying which models you have. Please see the following Apple Support article on how to configure these older base stations for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

  • Can I use a second Airport Express on the 1st floor to boost the signal from the 2nd floor Airport Express?

We have a wiFi network with on Airport Express on the upper floor. Watching NetFlix via AppleTV on the television downstairs is annoying since it stops to buffer the video every few minutes (NetFlix works smoothly upstairs, closer to the Airport Express). Can I use a 2nd Airport Express downstairs to boost the signal? If so, how do I configure it?

Yes, you can use a second 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) to extend the range of the first one.
Here are the basic steps to do so:
Dynamic WDS - Extending a Wireless Network Setup
If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
Open AirPort Utility, and then, select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then, choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
Enter the base station network and base station password if necessary.
Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Can I use a second Airport Express unit to printe wirelessly?

I have an Airport Express unit connected to my amplifier and my modem in order to listen to music wirelessly.  I would like to use my Cannon ip4300 printer the same way.  Can I use a second Airport Express unit to connect the printer to my modem?  If so, how is it done?  I am concerned about a conflict between the two Airport Express units.  Thank you.

I do just this with a ip4200 printer - you "extend" the Airport network with the second Airport then plug the printer into the USB port, (you could plug it into the USB port of the first Airport as well)
In the Airport utility (use 5.6 or 5.6.1) select the Printers tab and it should be there.

Q: Can I use my older Airport Express-g router (not -n) to extend my Airport Extreme-n wireless network? If Yes, Are the instructions the same as for adding an Airport Express-n router?

If you want to extend, using wireless only, the 802.11g Express doesn't support this.
However, if you want to use bridge mode over Ethernet or Powerline adapters then this is supported.
