Can I use an incremental backup disk for a restore function?

I have loaded PSE7 on my new PC. I have a full backup set and also an incremental set created after the full backup. After doing a File/Restore with the full backup set, can I use the incremental set to add the remaining picutures or do I need to do a new full backup first and only use it? If I can use the incremental set, are the steps to load it the same as for the full backup?

I have given up incremental backups because they don't save any time. I have found that the messages in the restore process are misleading. I don't know for sure why, but to restore, I got the best results by restoring the last incremental backup first, then the older ones and the original. If your incremental backups are correct, each in a separate folder or disk, you have a full version of your catalog at the time of backup stored within the folder or disk. I suppose this is to start with the latest catalog version and completing the process by comparing with previous versions, which ensures not adding deleted items.
I'd be interested to get other views on that matter !

  • Can I use MacBook Leopard backup disk to install Leopard on my MacPro?

I have a MacPro desktop and was planning on upgrading to Leopard. I just bought a MacBook that came with a Leopard installation disk. Can I use this disk to install Leopard on my MacPro? I wasn't sure if it was designed to be used only for the MacBook if it crashed and needed to be wiped clean. I don't want to accidentally erase my MacPro.
    Thanks

no. those disks are hardware specific and will not work on the mac pro. it's also against ULA to do this. if you want to install leopard on the mac pro you need to buy a retail copy of leopard.

  • Using iPod as backup disk for failing drive

I am an avid user of iTunes with multiple years of history behind me, and I have owned my own iPod since about February, and I have never been disappointed until now, but I feel this is more an ID 10.T error than anything else.
I have a big library, so much so that a regular iPod just wouldn't do it, I had to go for the biggest one available. With a library of 5,230 songs covering 31.65GB, I have a nearly irreplacable collection, and to my dismay, my internal disk is failing (thank you Maxtor...)
As a wise move, I synchronised my iPod with iTunes with the latest additions, and was horrified to find that iTunes had sleuthed an entire band (Motorhead! No!), three songs from another band (Jimi Hendrix, why all the good guys?!), and two lone songs had become victim to my series of bad sectors cropping up all over the place. While I was thankful that this had not altered my iPod listings (the tracks are still on the iPod, and are still playable), I am left with a situation.
If I want to recover these tracks, most of which were ripped from now long-lost CDs years ago rather than purchased over iTMS, how would I go about doing it? Obviously, restoring them on the failing disk would be absolutely fruitless, but there will come a time when I CAN afford to replace the disk, and when this time comes, the entire library will need restoring, and as an extra precaution, I want to have the library stored on my partner's PowerBook. Having turned off automatic synchronisation, under the fear that I would lose my tracks, I thought there would then also be a method for transferring all the data FROM the iPod TO a machine, but this does not appear to be possible, and one begins to ponder the usefulness and customer satisfaction of a one-way music player? Is there an option within iTunes I am missing or simply haven't found yet? Or does the problem lie deeper than I believe it to be? How am I supposed to get music off, and re-enable automatic synchronisation without vaporising my irreplacable music collection that already exists on my iPod?
Seriously, it took me many years to rip, and over five hours to transfer, do NOT tell me I'm going to have to vaporise it to do anything with it, as I've already lost a few ultra-rare tracks on the disk...
Any help that could be given is very much appreciated.
    Custom Windows XP Pro

Now that your iPod is set for manual music management, does the iPod show up in Windows like an external drive? Do you see it listed either by name or by the generic "removable disk" under My Computer? Because once Windows recognizes it as a removable drive, you can open it and poke around for your files. First you need to expose hidden files using Windows' Tools•Folder Options•View settings. Then you'll see the folders in which the iPod stores all the stuff.

I have iphone4s with the operating system of 8.1.  I changed my email address which was used to register my iphone due to hijacking.  I am able to read all my emails using the new address.  However, I can not download apps as it keep asking me to provide the password for the original registered email address.  I do not have the access to the email address, so I can not retreive the password.  I want to clear this mess by resetting everything, and register my current email address as the only one to communicate on my iphone.  Please teach me how?

Note - if your older apps needs an update it will use your old apple id and password, as Apps are tied to the apple id that was used to purchase it.

  • HT201250 Is it possible to use Dropbox or Microsoft OneDrive as the backup disk for time machine?

I have a MacBook Pro for which I have not set up Time Machine. I have a Dropbox account and a Microsoft OneDrive account, each with plenty of space to serve as backups. Is it possible to use either of these as THE backup disk for Time Machine? It doesn't appear intuitive from Time Machine on my MBP.
    Thank you.

No. Time Machine does not work with "cloud" drives.

Can you use airport extreme 802.11 for files back up and sharing

You can if you connect a hard drive that has been formatted correctly to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups for this type of setup, but you could store regular files this way.

  • Can't make an incremental backup in PSE 10 Organizer

I don't understand why I can't make an incremental backup in PSE 10 Organizer. I made my first full backup to my external drive a week ago. Today I tried to make an incremental backup. After selecting Incremental Backup from the file menu, a new screen appears asking for the Backup Path, and so I entered (by selecting) the full path name on my external drive where I made my original backup. But, next, it wants to know the name of the "Previous Backup file." I have absolutely no idea what the program wants at this point. What particular file does it want me to enter as the "previous backup file"?? There are hundreds of files in my backup directory. The backup directly does have a file called "Backup.tly" which I entered, hoping that this is the file it wants, but then I get this error message: "I:\Pictures\Adobe\Backup.tly does not contain a backup set for the current catalog. Please locate the last backup you made for this catalog." What am I missing here?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Jeff

    Hi Jeff
Once you have a full back up you can make incremental back ups but you need to follow a set routine. It’s not very intuitive.
Start by creating a new folder or label a new CD/DVD Disk - it’s best to use dates e.g. “PSE10 incr backup 2012-0104”
Press Ctrl+B and check Incremental, then click Next
Highlight your drive containing the last backup and click the bottom Browse button (previous back up file) then navigate to the TLY file and click open.
Click the Browse button above and navigate to your new folder “PSE10 incr backup 2012-0104”
    Click Done.
If your full backup originally contained 500 images, the incremental backup will only contain changes since the last backup e.g. files B000501.jpg, B000502.jpg etc
If you ever have to do a complete restore you start with the TLY file from the latest incremental backup. The program automatically recognizes the number of incremental steps and you will be prompted to insert a disc or navigate to the appropriate drive.
Incremental backup’s are obviously much quicker to write to disk but I recommend that you periodically perform another full backup and delete any earlier backups.

  • Can I use hard drive from bestbuy for my Pavilion dv5t-1000?

Hard drive is failing on my Pavilion dv5t-1000.  Do I have to use an hp replacement hard disk because of a partition that hp adds to their hard disks for recovery?  Can I use my HP Recovery Disks and recovery backups on a store-bought hard drive?  No longer under warranty.

    Hi:
You should be able to do that with no problem.
Just make sure the disk drive you purchase is the same specification (SATA II, 2.5") and size in GB (or larger size) then the original one.

  • Question about using an incremental backup to update a standby

We have a 2TB Oracle 10g database with a standby and the application that uses it is about to be updated.  We're using cumulative incremental backups with block change tracking to back it up with weekly level 0 backups.  The application upgrade will be making a lot of changes (several hundred GB) and we have stop the standby during the upgrade process as a quick way to get back (we don't have the space for a flashback recovery) in the event that there are issues with the upgrade.  We can just let the archivelogs back up and get them over to the standby and applied once they decide they like the upgrade but, it looks like it would be simpler and perhaps quicker to use an incremental backup to update the standby.  I probably won't but, If we do that, it looks like we can turn off archivelogs in the primary and not deal with them at all.  I've never tried this but, I do have some questions.
Does it make sense to take this approach?
If we were to turn off archivelogs in the primary, would that have any effect on block change tracking?  I don't see why it would but, had to ask.  Of course, we would turn archivelogs back on and take a level 1 backup after the upgrade.
Thanks in advance for the education.

Funny you should mention that rolling upgrade,  I'm actually planning to do that in another environment.  My testing says it works pretty well and I'll be able to move a 400GB database to new hardware and upgrade it to 11g with very little downtime.  However, in this case, the database is not being upgraded.  The application is.  It's just that, as part of that upgrade, there are a lot of updates and I'd just as soon not deal with the archivelogs for that. Here's what I was thinking about:
Set logs shipping to defer in the primary.
Stop log apply in the standby.
Turn off archivelogs in the primary.
    Do the application update.
If they like the results, turn archivelogs back on in the primary.
Take an rman incremental backup from scn in the primary.
Apply the incremental backup to the standby.
Start log log apply in the standby.
Start log shipping in the primary.
The process for getting and using the incremental is described here:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmdupdb.htm#BGBCEBJG
This isn't your regular incremental backup.
So, am I the only crazy one?  Has anyone else tried this?

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

How can I create a start up disk for a old intel core duo running 10.5.8.. Computer works fine, but can't find install disk. Want to use internal disk drive or USD flash drive.

Try calling 1-800-676-2775.  Give the serial number and thy *may* still burn you new install disks designed just for the hrdware in your system (for a fee, something like $160 per disk).  *May* is only because they may not burn disks for Leopard anymore.
If they do not burn them for you, you can buy Leopard disks off Amazon or eBay for about $200.
Have you considered Snow Leopard?.  Those disks only cost $19 (single user) or $29 (5-user license) through Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.
