Since there currently are no unlocked iPhones available in the US none of them will work. I would check with Softbank/KDDI to see if they will accept an unlocked US iPhone on their system and if the LTE on the US phone will work in Japan.
Do realize to that you will have to return to the US for warranty service.

Can my unlocked Sprint iPhone 4s be used on AT&T's $25 prepaid plan? I recently opted out of my two year contract. When I plugged in the AT&T gophone mini sim to activate it, it says "sim not valid" and says only compatible sim cards from a supported carrier may be used to activate the phone. Please help!

The only way to use a Sprint CDMA phone with Verizon's CDMA network would be to entice Verizon to reflash the firmware on you phone. And they will not do that, for anyone with any phone - you must purchase a Verizon phone to use the Verizon network.
You cannot use your CDMA Sprint phone with AT&T because AT&T does not operate a CDMA network. They use GSM, which is a different network than CDMA.

Someone sold me a bad IMEI AT&T iphone 5. I had an AT&T iphone 4 with straight talk prior to buying this phone. I didn't know the IMEI was bad so I bought the iphone 5 hoping to switch. I cut my SIM card and put it into the iphone 5. Everything worked perfectly fine so I went ahead and gave the dude the money. I went to sleep and wake up the next day and try to make a call and I get a message saying my phone has been blocked from the network. I contacted straight talk and they thought it was a problem of theirs so somehow they got my phone to work again. Everything was good , calls, texts , and data. 2 hours later, the same problem happens. So I call straight talk again , tell them the problem. They fix It again, 2 hours later , THE SAME PROBLEM. I gave up this time and began looking for answers. Is there any way I can use this iphone 5 with straight talk ? There was a comment I saw through my search for answers where if I get another straight talk sim everything would work again. Is this true? The StraightTalk iPhones are CDMA phones. Not GSM. StraightTalk does not support the use of unlocked iPhones on their pre-paid GSM service.
