Can I use any SATA hard drive with an iMac?

Hi, I'm a PC user from birth, and want to purchase an iMac, but the 500gb-1tb isn't enough storage for what I currently have on my PC (I have 4x 250gb hard drives, plus I'd need more room for the Mac OS). My question is, can I use any HD in the iMac, or does it have to be a "mac" hard drive? Also, can I hook up any external hd's? If this is the case, I'll buy 5-10 external enclosures for my hd's and build a custom box for them all. (Or put it in a slower PC I have, and run as a server, as I have to sell my good PC to afford a iMac)

My iMac reports its internal HD as 'WD3200AAJS' (WesternDigital Caviar SE line),
so it appears to be a standard form-factor HD with a standard SATA interface.

Google-around for photos of a disassembled Mid-2007 iMac. I ran across
some pics the other day, but unfortunately, didn't bookmark them. The link
below shows the insides of a slightly older model.

  • Can I use any external hard drive with Time Machine?

I have a 1TB external hard drive and also a 16GB flash drive. Is it possible to use either of these with Time Machine?

IMO Time Machine should be on its own Dedicated External Drive... one that is twice the size of the drive that it is backing up... the 16 GB Flash Drive is not appropiate for the task.

  • Can I use a sata3 hard drive with a late 2009 imac

Looks liker the hard drive in my five year old iMac is about to go belly up. Was getting hardware errors, very slow startup and Carbon Copy Cloner reported bad blocks during the backup. I want to buy a new HD at a local store and have the Apple store install it. Will they do that and can I use a SATA 3 drive with my older iMac?

YEs you can use a SATA III drive but the Apple Store will not install it for you. Find an AASP and see if they'll install a drive for you.

There are WiFi enabled portable hard drives available that can stream media, such as music or video, to your iPad, but no external hard drive in the sense of how you would use one with a computer.

  • Can I use a 40GB Hard Drive in my iMac G3 (Tray-Loader)?

Can I use a 40GB Hard Drive in my iMac G3 (Tray-Loader)? Any help gladly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Sean Butler

As pointed out, for OS X you need a small <8GB first partition with the tray loading models. If you never plan to run OS X and will only run OS9, then you can format the entire drive as one parition if you like. But to be safe, if you are not sure, make parition one <8GB and partition two the balance of the drive space.
As to your specific question, I have a 60GB drive in my 333MHz Grape Tray loader and it works fine, so yes you can put a 40 in there no problem.

  • Can I use any external hard drive to back up my Mac?

    Hello,
I'm new to mac's but have seen Time Capsule. I'm a little confused...
Can I go to any shop and buy an external hard drive of say 500GB and then plug it in via USB and back my mac up with the Time Machine?
It doesn't have to be a 1TB Apple own product Time Capsule? Or, does it...?
    Thank you,
    David

And time-maschine really doesn't care, what else is on that drive, (It is not a jealous maschine) aslong as you have enough space left.
That's true, as far as it goes, but it's much, much better to partition the external HD, so Time Machine has it's own, exlusive space.  See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
And just for clarity, Time Machine is the software built in to OSX that performs backups;  a Time Capsule is a bit of Apple hardware that combines a wireless router and hard drive.   Sometimes folks can get confused if you use the wrong term.

  • How can i use an external hard drive with my ipad

I just got a new ipad 2 I am trying to see it is possible to connect a external hard drive to take  my picture and documents with me.

Basically you can't, though there are a few (fairly expensive) drives coming onto the market which are said to be compatible. There is no USB port on the iPad, and the optional camera connection kit is only for the transfer of photos/videos, so wouldn't recognise other file types - if you were able to connect a drive via it then the drive would need it's own power source, the photos would have to be in a specific format, and there is still no guarantee that it would work.
There are apps available for the iPad which can use/access cloud services such as Dropbox.

  • Can i use a wireless hard drive with an ipad

I am looking at buying a wireless Hard drive to store my movies on can I connect it to my Ipad?

There are some wifi-enabled drives that allow you to stream content from them to the iPad e.g. GoFlex Satellite and Kingston Wi-Drive - I haven't used any so I don't know if one is better than the other

  • How can I use my external hard drive with my new (firewire-less) MacBook?

I read in another post that the available firewire adapters don't work for external hard drives. So how can I get my music, etc. off my external hard drive and onto my new computer?

Like the second or third one in this picture?

They are USB ports - the smaller one is a mini-USB (like you might find on a digital camera) and the third is a USB-B port (such as on a printer). You can use a mini or standard USB cable (depending on the port) to connect it to your Macbook.

Time Machine is a software feature of OS X 10.5.5.

  • Can I use an Internal Hard Drive with Time Machine?

My Mac Pro has 4 internal bays for hard drives. Can I set-up one of those bays for a Time Machine hard drive?

Yes, lots of Mac Pro users do that.
It's still a good idea to make secondary backups, especially to a portable external HD, that you can take off-site, so you're protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike on your power lines, etc.
[CarbonCopyCloner|http://www.bombich.com> is donationware; [SuperDuper|http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html] has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do updates instead of full replacements, or scheduling.

  • Can I Use a SATA II Drive with First Generation Power Mac G5

I just recently picked up a M9032 PowerMac G5 2.0GHz-DP. I has a 160GB HD installed in the first bay, but I'd like to add a second HD to the second bay. I heard that there maybe issues surrounding installing SATA II drives in this model machine.
Anyone have suggestions for a 500MB HD that I can add?

  • Can I use a 3TB Hard Drive in my iMac mid 2010 27" ?

I am updating my system with SSD and I want to replace the stock HD with a 3TB Hard Drive. It's an Hitachi HD.

Maybe...but the problem is heat.   You can always add it externally via Firewire using a Newertech Voyager.
http://www.macsales.com may be able to install it safely in your machine as well.  They also offer an option to add an eSATA port on some iMacs.  Check with them what your options are.

  • Can I use an external hard drive on my iMac if the internal drive is dead?

The internal 1 TB hard drive on my 2009 w/Mavericks hard drive is failing.  I clone that drive to an external hard drive as a backup and often boot from the external when I want to do some maintence (Disk Warrior) on the iMac drive.  So far Disk Warrior has saved that iMac drive but eventually it won't be able to do so.
I looked into buying a new internal drive and replacing the old iMac drive but the procedures are not as easy as I hoped.  So my question becomes: if/when that internal drive goes belly up will I be able to set the external drive as the main drive through System Preferences and automatically boot into it each time I need the machine?  Or would I have to boot into a USB Maintenance drive then reset to reboot into the external drive each time I wanted to use the machine.
Of course I'll be looking into buying a new iMac but until then I want to use this older machine as much as possible.
    Thanks.

Yes, you’ll be able to do that.

  • How can I use a firewire hard drive on a new Macbook with one USB-C only?

How can I use a firewire hard drive on a new MacBook with only one USB-C?

kaz-k is correct about FireWire not being supported by any possible connector or adaptor to USB-C and never will.  However, there is no such thing as a FireWire Hard Drive.  There are only SATA (or if it is a really old one, ATA,) drives in a FireWire enclosure.  If you can remove the drive from the case/enclosure - bust it open somehow if it is a glued-up unit - then the drive can be placed into a regular USB3 enclosure. Then it can connect to the new MacBook via any one of the adaptors Apple sells.
