Can I use DDR2/667 ram in a machine wants DDR2/533 ram?

I searched all over these forums, googled my eyes out, read the dev note for my machine and could not find a definitive answer...
The scenario is this: I have a PowerMac G5 (Late 2005) M9590LL/A, that is spec'd for DDR2/533 or PC2-4200.
I have a friend who just bought a 24" Intel iMac and upgraded the ram to 2 GB, thus he has 2 pieces of 512 mb DDR2/667 that are unused.
He will sell them to me at a very good price. Will they work in my machine? Can you use FASTER ram and will it clock down to the proper speed in a machine that is looking for slower ram?
Right now in almost all places online the DDR2/533 chips are MORE expensive than the DDR2/667 chips.
Right now my machine still has the stock of 512 mb of DDR2/533 ram (2 pieces of 256 mb).
Another friend told me to just put the chips in and see if they will work, I do not want to do this if there is some minor voltage difference that will either damage the motherboard or the DDR2/667 chips or both.
I know in the PeeCee world, you can use PC133 ram in systems that need PC100, and DDR/333 ram in systems that need DDR/266, and likewise DDR/400 in systems that are looking for DDR/333, but I remember reading that DDR2 ram is more sensitive to BUS speed and voltage than DDR(1) ram.
Any ideas?
Please help me :>
Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Even if you found a similar form factor module with a
higher spec than Apple's official, I would not put it
in the machine. Mac OS X can be very particular
about the kind of RAM that is installed, and panic if
the wrong kind is installed, or cause problems such
as unexpectedly quitting applications. Follow the
specs to the letter. See my FAQ:
http://www.macmaps.com/Macosxspeed.html#RAM
So you are basically saying that higher-clocked ram will not spec down to run slower?
Thanks for the info. I will give a good read to the link here to your FAQ.

PC2-4200 RAM is not PC2-5300 RAM. The former is DDR2 533 MHz and the latter is DDR2 667 MHz. You cannot use the former if your computer requires the latter. Your model requires DDR2 667 MHz PC2-5300 RAM, not PC2-4200.
Actually it should work but with what should be an obvious performance penalty. I've tried it (used PC2-4200) myself on my late 2007 model when I was bored and had access to some PC2-4200 modules from another computer that was upgraded. I've read the Intel chipset datasheets, and they've always had backwards compatibility in mind. The MacBook4,1 designation is for the last of the Intel chipsets. I'd also take a wild guess that the NVIDIA chipset versions might work with PC2-4200, although it's been reported that they work with PC2-6400.
If PC2-5300 is mixed with PC2-4200, it should read as DDR2 533 in system profiler. The default when speeds are mixed is to run both at the same speed. I tried all sorts of combinations including 2 GB (PC2-5300) + 512 MB (PC2-4200), 2x512MB PC2-4200, 512 MB (PC2-4200) + 512 MB (PC2-5300).
Apple doesn't exactly tout this as a feature, but in my experience it will work. It's not an ideal solution and frankly I wouldn't go out of my way to get PC2-4200. However - I've tried it myself out of curiosity and found that it did work - at least in my machine.

  • Can I use the DDR3 ram in Macbook 2.1?

Can I use the DDR3 RAM that I took ou from my Mac Mini in my Macbook 2.1? The original ram in the Macbook is DDR2!

Unfortunately DDR3 and DDR2 are not compatible.  They also use physically different sockets and each will not fit in the other.

i didn't write that i will use different modules. i just asked if it is possible to use ddr2-533 in this notebook.
why did you write only these three ? i found much more in the specs:
    1024MB (1GB) Memory PC2700 DDR SODIMM (333MHz) PA3313U-2M1G
    1GB PC2-4300 DDR2 Memory PA3411U-2M1G

can I use iCloud on my computer? I want to back up my iMac and restore it since it is running so slow.

You need to be running Lion (10.7.x) to have iCloud run. Here are the system requirements for Lion:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory (4GB strongly recommended)
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
If your current iMac has 4GB of RAM then you can upgrade to Lion via the Mac App store and then use iCloud. However iCloud is not a backup system so please read up on what iCloud is designed for. To backup your system really all you need is an external HD and you can use Time Machine which is built into your system. Here is the Time Machine Tutorial to learn how to start.

There is an international warranty on the Mac, but not on the iPhone...iPhone warranties are tied to the country of purchase.  Iphone 5s are currently only available in the US tied to a carrier, you cannot use another nano-sim card in them.

  • Do you have to use the Apple RAM with the heatsink? Or can you use any 667 MGz DDR2 RAM?

I'm sprucing up my MacPro 2 x 2.66 GHz (hard drives, video card, & RAM) and would like to know if I have to use Apple's RAM with the heatsink on it.
Meaning, the RAM I end up purchasing, does it HAVE to have the heat sink on it? Or can I use any regular DDR2 667 MHz dimms?
I've been asking/researching and am getting mixed answers.
    Thanks for the help!

You MUST use RAM with both the large Apple-specified Heatsink AND the Apple approved Temperature Sensor. These are "tuned" to the airflow inside a Mac Pro. Modules must also be ECC modules, 72 data bits wide.
If you decide not to, the internal fans may not work properly, the modules will get too hot and will fail prematurely
The best way to solve this pronlem is to deal with a Vendor that knows Macs and can tell YOU which modules work in your Mac -- guaranteed or your money back if it does not work for any reason. And a lifetime warranty -- if it ever fails and still has their sticker on it, they will replace it, free.
There are a few one-off deals out there that may be a little cheaper, but the cost of dealing with reputable Mac-oriented Vendors does not add substantially to the price. And you do not get stuck with "you buy it, you own it" modules that do not work in your Mac.

  • A Simple Question - Can i use CL3 DDR400 RAM with 848P?

I've posted earlier but no-one had come back to me and if memory is to blame i need to get this replaced first thing in the morning asap as this is critical.
Can i use PC3200 DDR400 CL3 memory in an MSI 848P or not?
I'm using an Intel P4 2.2Ghz 533 CPU if that counts?.... so the memory is only running at 333Mhz...
I'm trying to use 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR400 CL3 and i'm getting nothing but problems such as my PC refusing to boot up or reboot properly and also the following messages :-
'DRAM TIMING IS TOO TIGHTLY SO RELOAD TIMING'
I havn't set any timing - what does this mean??????
In the BIOS section 'DRAM TIMING SETTING' There is only a CAS Latency option for 2 or 2.5 - no option for 3?
Does all of this mean that CL3 type DDR can't be used or is in-compatible with the 848P?
If so, there was no mention of this in the product spec or anything relating to this on the MSI website.
Please can somebody, anybody tell me?

Just as I've replied in your other thread, you've to start playing with the timings instead of the SPD timings...

  • I've downloaded Lion. I have a boot disk. Can I use it to install on another machine?

I downloaded Lion from the Mac App store and it's working 100%. Love it.
After downloading and before installing, I copied the installESD.dmg (I think that's the correct filename) to a DVD (as per all the instructions out there to create a boot disc). I did NOT copy the entire "Install Lion App" to the DVD.
My question is: if a friend buys lion from the app and then cancels the download, can he use my boot disk to install lion as an upgrade? The reason I'm asking is that his Internet connection is rubbish and he can't download it. Presumably if I copy the dmg file to his hard disk I can run it that way?

Actually, you can burn a DVD or USB (8GB) thumb drive and let him boot and install from it. Or, you can actually run the InstallESD.dmg file from his machine. I've done both and Lion installs.
Personally, I would burn a DVD or thumb drive so you always have it.
Burn the InstallESD.dmg to a bootable DVD.
Launch Disk Utility and click the Burn button
Select the InstallESD.dmg file from your desktop as the image to burn. Insert a blank DVD and wait for the the image to be burned.
Burn the InstallESD.dmg to a bootable USB thumb drive.
Open Disk Utility and drag the InstallESD.dmg file to the left side pane. Go to the Partition tab ad select 1 Partition from the drop down menu. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) on the left. Click the Options button under the partition table and choose GUID Partition Table. You will need this to make the drive bootable on a Mac. Hit the Apply button when ready to format the drive (it will erase everything on the drive).
Click on the Restore tab and drag the InstallESD.dmg file to the Source. Drag the USB partition to the Destination. Hit the Restore button and it will create the bootable USB drive with the OS X Lion installer

  • Can i use an sd card for time machine

Can I use an SD card for my Time Machine backups?  If so, what capacity would be required?  Thanks.

The device you use for Time Machine backups should have at least twice the capacity of the drive you're backing up. For the vast majority of users, this means an SD card is not a practical option at all.
You can, however, make good use of an SD card for quick manual backups of your current documents while you're away from your desk or office and your Time Machine backup drive.

  • Can I use HP XW8400 ram in my Mac Pro

    Hi guys,
I have the opportunity to buy 4 x 2GB of RAM which is/appears to be the same spec as that fitted in the HP XW8400 workstation. I'd rather buy Apple branded but it is too expensive.
Can anyone confirm this RAM will be compatible please [it will have the large heat sinks fitted]
    Thanks

Just looked on Crucial.com and specs are: -
    HP XW8400
    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 512Meg x 72 •   Part #: CT570802
    Mac Pro 2006
    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 512Meg x 72 •   Part #: CT685422
Different part numbers as they have different heat sinks but looks like it's a match; just would like an expert to confirm if possible please
