Can I use Firefox Sync on a public computer, as I did with Xmarks?

I am going to miss Xmarks. How can I use Firefox Sync when I go to an internet cafe?

Sync doesn't allow this because the data is encrypted by the client — in order to provide web access we'd need to be able to read your data (or hand it over to the FBI!) and we don't want to do that.

  • Can i use FireFox Sync on my Nokia x6

    Hi,
I have a Nokia x6 mobile. Can I use Firefox in it? And..... can I use the Sync functionality in it?

Sorry we don't have a way to access sync on a Nokia x6 at this time.

  • Can I use Firefox sync on a pc that is not mine?

can Firefox sync be used on public computers, i.e. university computers that I have a user account available to use?
Or would other people be able to access my bookmarks etc because its a public computer?

What you need to consider is whether if you '''save''' bookmarks on the computer will they be accessible to others. Computers for public use sometmes save files in areas accessible to all users. You probably need to consult your university IT department if you are unsure.
Similar considerations may apply to documents that you may keep on the University computer.

  • My phone can't use Firefox Sync anymore, says it's "deprecated."

On my Samsung Galaxy S Blaze running Ice Cream Sandwich, I'm suddenly having trouble with Firefox Sync. It was working fine yesterday, and today, I noticed that an update to Firefox for Android was installed.
So I'm trying to send a tab from my phone straight to my computer, but no dice. I've already checked the "Accounts and sync" portion of my phone's settings. Firefox Sync is listed with the proper email address, and I haven't removed my phone from the list of allowed devices for my account. Oddly, Firefox Sync is shown as being deprecated. My phone literally shows my email address, and under it, "Firefox Sync (deprecated)".
Anybody else having this problem, and is there a fix for it? Any info would be much appreciated.

So, sending a tab '''from''' my phone '''to''' my PC worked yesterday with the standard build, but is now somehow a Nightly-specific feature? Why? It doesn't make any sense.

  • How can I use my synced bookmarks on another computer without merge?

I don't want end up with all the bookmarks from each PC that I use Firefox on.
If I go to another computer that has Firefox, I don't want the bookmarks, history, etc. from this computer. In other words, absolutely no merging of my stuff with their stuff.
I guess I want my bookmarks etc. to reside in the cloud and I want to experience Firefox on each and every device that I use as if it were my personal device, not a blend of my stuff and their stuff.

Sync isn't meant to be used as a backup device, but merely to sync data between multiple devices.
So it is not possible to store your bookmarks in the cloud on the sync server without syncing it to other devices.
You would have to exclude the bookmarks and the history from syncing if you still want other personal data to get synced and backup your data locally.
You can do that manually or via an extension like MozBackup or FEBE.

  • Can I use firefox sync with my htc windows mobile? It is neither a droid phone or an iphone.

I have the htc HD2 mobile and it is a windows system. How do I sync Firefox with it? Is it possible to do this?

We're not currently developing Firefox for Windows Mobile, but there is an old pre-release version that you can try out here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms

  • Use Firefox Sync to store bookmarks in the cloud?

Can I setup Firefox Sync even if I only have one device? If so, can I use Firefox Sync to backup my bookmarks to the cloud (instead of using a third-party extension?) I'm guessing that Sync stores bookmarks in the cloud because how else would it be able to merge bookmarks with another device (e.g., a phone)?

Sync does indeed store the data you choose to Sync in the cloud.
Because you need to retain a lengthy unique code in order to recover that data from a different installation of Firefox, many users find it not to be a good method of backup because that Recovery Key was lost in a hard drive crash or reformat. Make sure you store the key in a safe location outside of your computer along with your username and password.
If you end up choosing to use a different cloud backup service such as Crashplan or Carbonite, you can point it to your bookmarkbackups folder so you have a number of files for potential recovery. To get the full path to that hidden folder, the easiest way is to access it from within Firefox.
You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Double-click bookmarkbackups. You should see numerous files that are date and time coded. You can click after the folder name in the address bar to select and copy the path. (This is based on Windows 7, but I assume Windows 8.1 is similar from the desktop side.)

  • I had saved all my bookmarks using firefox sync. Now i changed the OS and trying to get the bookmarks . how can i do this

i had change my operating system. so the bookmarks which i had in firefox i saved using firefox sync by creaating the account. Now i have changed my operating system but no idea how to get back those bookmarks on the same laptop. cani do that? is there any solution for this

    Add another computer
Do these steps on the computer you are trying to add to Firefox Sync.
At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button and select Set Up Sync. The Firefox Sync Setup window will open.
    Click I Have an Account.
Since you're not near the device with Sync already set up, click the I don't have the device with me link.
Sign in to your Sync account:
    Enter your account email address
    Enter your password
    Enter your Recovery Key
    Then click Next
You will see a Setup Complete screen. Click Finish to complete adding this device to your Sync account.

  • How do I clear my bookmarks from the Firefox browser on a public computer, having synced my account to see them during a browsing session?

Here's what I'm trying to achieve:
    1. I use Firefox on someone else's computer and sync my account to retrieve my bookmarks. (This works.)
    2. After finishing my browsing session, I sign out of my Firefox account, and my bookmarks are cleared from the Firefox browser. (This doesn't work.)
I have tried the following options:
    a) Open menu > Options > Sync > untick 'Bookmarks' > OK. This doesn't clear my bookmarks from the browser, not even if I close and open it again. They all show up.
    b) Open menu > Options > Sync > under Firefox Account click 'Disconnect' > OK. This doesn't clear my bookmarks either, only necessecitates me signing in to sync again.
I understand there used to be an option to 'unlink this device', which may clear all data including bookmarks, but I can't find it anywhere. I've also read an article suggesting clearing bookmarks etc can be achieved by deleting your Firefox profile from a device, but I fear this will delete global options such that I won't be able to access them on my home computer.
Surely there must be a way of siging in then out of the Firefox account on different computers, like you can with e-mail, without leaving all your bookmarks etc open for every other user to see afterwards? I'm transfering to Firefox from Chrome precisely because it doesn't have the capacity to do this (scarily), and to clear my bookmarks from a friends' browser, I had to uninstall Chrome on her computer!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Sync wasn't intended to be used in that manner. You would be better off carrying around a USB Flash Stick with Portable Firefox for use on "strange" PC's.
    2. You could open the "Library" {Ctrl + Shift + B} and highlight all those bookmarks and then delete them all at once. But that would also delete all the other bookmarks, and it isn't foolproof. All another person would need to do it to '''''restore''''' a bookmark backup file that has your bookmarks. Beyond that, a new Profile could be created and then the current Profile deleted; but that's "messing with" someone else's computer - an action that is worthy of terminating a friendship over, IMO.
And if that "public" computer was set up properly, Sync should have been disabled.

  • When using Firefox Sync on multiple devices, I used to be able to 'send' a tab from one computer to another. Is this still possible? If so, how?

When using Firefox Sync on multiple devices, I used to be able to 'send' a tab from one computer to another. Is this still possible? If so, how?
I don't mean the ability to see what tabs are open on another device (I know how to do this). But if I am at work and find something that I want to read at home, it would be helpful to 'send' the tab to my home PC so that when I return home, it will automatically open that tab for me.

    Can anyone help?

  • If I lost my mobile, how can I deactivate firefox sync on it... without it?

I have Firefox Sync running on my laptop, my desktop and on my smartphone too. If someone stole my phone... how can I stop Firefox Sync only on that device, from my laptop or desktop? I only know how to disable firefox sync on the device I want to disable. But if the device is not with me anymore... What should I do? If I stop using Firefox Sync on my desktop, my laptop will not sync anymore..

You'll need to change your Sync password and then reconnect things using the new password. For more detail, read here:

  • Has anyone used Firefox Sync and Xmarks at the same time?

Firefox is my primary desktop browser. On my desktops, I use Xmarks because I use Firefox, IE and Chrome. It enables me to keep my bookmarks synced across browsers as well as use home/work profiles, etc. However, I'd like to use Firefox Sync so I can sync the bookmarks to my smartphone. Has anyone successfully tried this? I thought I'd ask before trying it myself just in case. Thanks!

Using Xmarks and Sync simultaneously will create a mess.
You can create a new profile, import the bookmarks from your main profile, and set up Sync for the new profile.
The flip side is, bookmarks from your main profile would not get synced with your new profile.
Alternatively, Xmarks is also available for Android.

  • Deleted my navigation data on a browser using Firefox Sync

Yesterday I started using a private tab in Firefox for Android, but I accidently switched to a regular tab. And an unwanted site got registered in my history and as auto-complete sugestion... I didn't find any way to remove these individual entries, I got desperate so I deleted the whole navigation data in Firefox for Android. I use Firefox Sync and I still have my old data in my laptop (it uses Ubuntu), but I tried and I can't get the old data back in Android.
    I have 3 questions:
    - Is is possible to delete indivual entries of history and auto-complete suggestion in Firefox for Android?
    - Is it possible to get the old navigation data back in my Android device?

    HI,
    Yes and Yes.
    # you can open a new tab and see the history list. Tap and hold the unwanted history and select "Remove"
    # You would have to sync the device to the account. Also you can swipe to history on a new tab and swipe between history and history from today after is syncs to confirm if it is there.

  • How do I log on to my personalized firefox browser from a public computer using another browser.

How do I log on to my personalized firefox browser from a public computer using another browser.

Right now, there is no real way to do that. You could log into Firefox Sync [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-firefox-sync https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/what-firefox-sync], and that would move your personal data to the new computer (if it was using Firefox). but then you would want to delete your profile on the public computer to ensure you didn't leave your personal information available for others.
There are initiatives that plan on making it possible to log onto Firefox from any computer and instantly have all your information, but they are not near completion.
