Can I use Homeplug dLAN to solve my AirTunes problems

Hi,
I have an Airport Extreme base station three Airport Expresses around a big old house. As well as extending the wireless network each Airport Express is connect to a hi-fi amplifier in different parts of the house. My wish is to be able to play the same music all around the house via AirTunes. Unfortunately more often than not the listening experience is not good; the audio stream keeps dropping.
Can I solve this by introducing homeplug adapters to the network? If so, how should I do this?

Ethernet power line adapters perform a number of functions in order to transmit a pseudo Ethernet signal over the AC wiring in a home. As you might imagine, one of these functions has to do with filtering noise and interference on the line.
Some power line adapters seem to perform well with the streaming audio signal and some do not. The bottom line is that it is not possible to predict in advance whether a given adapter will work in a given situation.
For that reason, if you are considering the use of power line adapters, you would want to have a clear understanding of the store's return policy in case things do not work out as hoped.
The basic setup would include one power line adapter located near the AirPort Extreme with a short Ethernet cable connecting from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the adapter.
Another adapter would be plugged into the AC socket near the location of each AirPort Express and a short Ethernet cable would connect the adapter to the AirPort Express.
The AirPort Express will need to be configured differently in this type of setup as follows:
Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab located below the row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as your AirPort Extreme network
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as your AirPort Extreme network
Wireless Password = Same password as your AirPort Extreme network
Confirm Password
Click the Music icon to make sure that AirTunes is enabled
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings

Can I use a Mini as a remote Airtunes stylee speaker terminal?

I have a iMac whcih acts as my 'main' (currently also my only) iTunes library. I am soon to sync my Mini with my iMac with TuneRanger so I should have the same libraries on each machine.
However, while I ponder the various setups, is it possible for the Mini to behave in the same way as an Airport Express/Airtunes whereby I have my iMac playing music, transmitting to my Airport Express in my kitchen and also to my Mini in my living room? I could use Airfoil for this but I would prefer for it to be controllable from an iPhone.
I guess the alternative would be to 'run' any music that I'm playing anywhere other than my study (where my iMac is) from my Mini (as the 'source') and switch the kitchen speakers on/of from the iPhone. But that relies on TuneRanger having recently run as I'll be doing all my ripping/purchases on the iMac.
So, can the Mini behave/act like an Airtunes speaker?

I heard of software that can do it but can't remember the name of it maybe someone else in the discussions will remember.
You dont need to sync your music library. a work around is this. enable itunes sharing on the imac. enable screen sharing on the mac mini.
connect to the mini from the imac using screen sharing, open itunes on the mini and select your imacs library and off you go.

Anyone using Multi plexing to solve RMI firewall problem?

I read in the RMI protocol spec about Rmi's multiplexing protocol (http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/docs/guide/rmi/spec/rmi-protocol7.html)
which states:
The purpose of multiplexing is to provide a model where two endpoints can each open multiple full duplex connections to the other endpoint in an environment where only one of the endpoints is able to open such a bidirectional connection using some other facility.
However i still have not found how to do this using the RMI api provided within Java. I have read numerous posts saying that you CANNOT using the multiplexing protocol, I have read posts which say that you should not allow the client to create a server socket which will force the client to use the multiplexing protocol over an existing socket.
My main concern is the product i am developing will be used across firewalls, where we are able to create connections from our server to our client, but the firewall disallows the opposite, and our IT department WILL NOT open access on known ports. Thusly our only option is to use the multiplexing protocol if it does in fact exist/work.
If anyone has any experience using the multiplexing protocol in a firewall environment please post your experience here.

I have had a lot of success using proxies to work around firewalled clients. I host a free software project at java.net dedicated to spontaneously linking Virtual Machines using RMI.

Can I use AEX as a WAP and AirTunes box?

I'm currently using my AEX on my wireless network to stream music to my home theater from iTunes. It's a Buffalo Technology wireless router and 1 Buffalo WDS station to cover my house. I just installed a new toshiba HD DVD player than has an ethernet port for both updates and online HD DVD content. I originally setup the AEX as a AirTunes box. Can I configure it somehow so I can still stream iTunes and also connect the HD DVD player to the ethernet port on the AEX and let it act as a wireless access point (WAP) so I can get the HD DVD player online.
My other alternative is to use a 2nd Buffalo WDS station and configure it as a WAP, but it seems rather cumbersome when the AEX is sitting right there already on the network.

From the limited information you provided and a quick Google search, it appears that this is probably not possible. It appears the Buffalo uses a proprietary WDS which only works on with it's own products.

I assume your web application connects to the database directly through JDBC and you're proposing to add a middle layer of RMI. Doing this will not reduce network latency - however if you're clever about how you serialize your resultsets, you can reduce the amount of network traffic and improve performance.

Note that compressing the data will add processing overhead at both ends.
Also remember to override the readObject/writeObject methods in the objects you're serializing.

I have been using a Western Digital 500 GB ext HD (The Book) and it has served for a year with no problems except it is nearing capacity.
I suspect that 2 TB might be more than my system can keep track of, much less still handle the demands of the PhotoShop program.
Does my system have an upper size limit for hard drives that I should be aware of? I need to know so that I don't buy this expensive hardware and then discover that I can't use it, or that it causes big problems in the future. And if it CAN handle the 2 TB HD, I'm worried that it would slow things down and my PhotoShop program might freeze up, or some other nasty situation develop.

You are using an older IDE drive in your system so it's likely you don't have a SATA port on your board and even if you used an ATA/SATA port adapter, there's a strong possibility that your onboard chipset wouldn't work with a drive as large as 2TB. Your only real option is an add-in SATA 2 PCI card which would allow you to connect a 2TB SATA HDD to your system through the card's onboard SATA chipset.

You are confusing RAM (Ramdom Access Memory) with hard drive storage space.
You need to install more RAM, not an additonal hard drive.
You can purchase an external hard drive, if you like, if you want to install the new OS X upgrade onto an external drive. If you want to run the new OS X Mavericks from the external drive, depending on your Mac model, you need a fast protocol external hard drive.
Either a USB 3.0, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800 connected external hard drive.
To start, if you are running your Mac on 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, this is the barest of RAM to run Snow Leopard.
Without knowing any of your Macs specs, you realistically should be running your current OS with, at least 4 GBs of RAM.
Newer versions of OS X need, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more as these newer OS X versions use more Mac computer resources than earlier OS X versions.
What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed in your Mac?
Be aware, if your Mac is running any older software that used to run under older PowerPC model Macs, those software apps will no longer will work under newer versions of OS X.
The emulation software that allows older PowerPC apps to run under OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, called, Rosetta, no longer exists in newer versions of OS X and is long dead.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
