Can I use HP System Recovery Disks on a new hard drive replacement with a lower storage capacity?

Can I use the HP System Recovery Disks from my HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Select Edition Entertaimnent Notebook PC when I replace the failing hard drive with a smaller storage capacity hard drive?  Right now it is a Toshiba 750GB SATA hard disk drive, 5400 RPM, 2.5 inch small form factor (SFF) and I am planning to replace it with the Toshiba HDKCB26 500GB 2.5 inch Hybrid Hard Drive.  I read that I cannot use a System Image to restore the hard drive because it is a smaller capacity then the original Hard Drive. If this is true, it seems that my only option is to use the HP Recovery Disks.

Hi:
Normally the HP recovery disks don't work on a smaller hard drive either, but it may be possible in your case if HP offered a 500 GB HDD in that model series.
No guarantees though.

Yes you can. That is the purpose of having the recovery media.
Replace your hard disk with one that is of equal or larger capacity. That does not mean use a larger than 750 GB hard disk unless yours had one installed when delivered.

  • Will recovery disks work on new hard drive

I just installed new hard drive on hp laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. I used the iso file installation disc. Now I would like to use the recovery disks I made 2.5 years ago to load the original software and drivers as when the pc was new. When I put Disc 1 in the drive the pc does nothing. I've been reading online that you have to change the order of the drives in the BIOS so the pc will boot from the dvd drive.
Then further research online, I read that recovery disks will not work on a new hard drive, and on a smaller drive than was previously installed.
I did do a full system backup from old hard drive, so I have those 3 discs. I have not tried that. Basically all I use pc for is web browsing, email and an occassional movie.
I guess I just want it to seem like a new pc with all the original software and drivers.
I downloaded hp support assistant, however it states that new updates are not needed. That can't be right.
I went to hp download page, but not sure which drivers/software to download.
This is wearing me out. Please help if you have any suggestions/advice. Thank you!

Paul, thank you for answering. I have a HP Pavilion DV7-4270us.
From my research, I don't believe the operating system is on the recovery disks. I am very hesitant to work with the recovery disks again. Anyway my new hard drive is 500 GB which is smaller than the old 640 GB that was previously installed from the factory. So the recovery disks may not work on a smaller drive.
At this point, I would like to get back HP Media Smart and Synaptics click pad working. I have downloaded the driver for the clickpad, but it does not operate like it used to. No settings to choose from etc.  I downloaded the Media Smart Software package and driver, but the software package is not there. I was just reading online, and found a link for the Simple Pass Identity Protection fingerprint reader. I downloaded it, and seems so far to work. Also, on the keyboard the light on the keyboard button for (volume on and off) remains lit all the time. It used to light up only when the volume was off.
Man, you sure can run into all kinds of problems when you install a new hard drive. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!  Thanks, Ken.

Always want to keep the boot drive with more free space than may seem necessary for performance and to function at its best, 30-40% free or even 50% is not excessive.
Ideal is to separate your system from your data.
You should always have bootable backup / clone of your system
Don't use a green drive for system or data though.
When you are done cloning system and/or data, remove the old original and keep as backup.
Then move the system drive to #1 - no matter what you want to reset the default boot volume to where the system is.

  • Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a HomeHub router?

Can I use time machine to back up via a hard drive connected by USB to a BT HomeHub router? Is there a better way to back up and store files than via the USB port on my new MacBook Pro? I'd like storage to be accessible from my earlier version MacBook too.

I think you want to make backups without connecting a hard disk via USB. In other words, you want to have the data storage be shared in your home wirelessly.
If this is the case, I recommend using a Time Capsule.
Time Capsule works great with Time Machine. You can set up all your devices to automatically make backups on the Time Capsule wirelessly and effortlessly.

That link seems to be broken.  It does normally lead to a solution. For the time being go to

Let your mouse hover over the link until you see the option appear on the right to view the cached version Google contains:
Putting iPod devices with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode
If necessary, verify that your iPod has a Click Wheel.
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it is charged.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will should say "Do not disconnect".
If you are having difficulty putting your iPod into Disk Mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center. If you are still unable to put your iPod into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.
If you have an older iPod model, without a Click Wheel
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it has a charge.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, then release them. This resets iPod. When you reset iPod, all your music and data files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost.
When the Apple logo appears, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod should say "Do not disconnect".
If you have an iPod nano (6th generation)
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode,  verify that it has a charge.
Reset the device by pressing the Sleep and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the display turns black. This should take about eight seconds.
When the display turns black, hold down the Volume Down and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device enters Disk mode.

Hello friends.. I have a similar question, in that I would like to purchase the 2TB TC for use as a NAS device, in addition to taking advantage of the Air Port extreme.. Then I could dump my Linksys router.
I was originally looking at a Synology NAS solution, but the TC seems like it can meet my needs.
I have a Synology NAS as well as the Time Capsule.  If you look at the 3.2 beta program, the Synology actually attempts to replicate TC functionality in that you can use it with Time Machine on your Mac.
I must say, Airport on the TC is definitely a nice feature!
    Nickles96 wrote:
In addition to the obvious feature of the backup, can I indeed also use the TC as a NAS drive to access from remote locations (example from the office)?
I'm surprised more people aren't using the TC as a dedicated NAS deviced.. I've searched high and low on forums around the web, and don't seem to see many people trying to use it as I've outlined.
I can't see why this wouldn't fufill my needs, and take the place of a separate NAS solution (like the Synology, or iOmega, Seagate, etc....)
Has anyone used this TC as such?
Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues.  I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages.  I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean.  In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic.  Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out.

how can i use the airport time capsule as a external hard drive?

Why do you recommend not place things like iTunes libraries or photo libraries on the drive? It was what I am looking for...
I suggest that you ask the experts over in the iPhoto Support Community about their opinions on placing an iPhoto or Aperture library on the Time Capsule....even if you plan to use a wired connection for your Mac and the Time Capsule.
But, if Terrence Devlin answers, be prepared for a lecture about why you should not ever do this.
If you place the iTunes library on the Time Capsule, be prepared for iTunes to give you messages about not being able to find the library.
In addtion, LaPastenague has the answer for you in a nutshell......corruption problems.
Bottom line....the Time Capsule is for your backups.....not "everyday" files and especially not libraries.

My mac won't recognise my new belkin hub hardware. Any Suggestions? It used to recognise it before I had the hard drive replaced and now it doesn't.

Pull out all of your USB devices, and reboot. Now, replace the USB devices they way you'd like them to work. That reassigns the devices so you can use them again.
Respond here...I'm interested how this turns out.

    Hi,
Here's one option you could try as it will give a good indication whether there is a hardware problem with the optical drive itself.
    Create a bootable Ubuntu CD
The Ubuntu CD you create should run as you boot the notebook ( as should your Recovery Discs ) , so if this will not run, the problem is almost certainly a Hardware issue with the DVD drive or the sata controller.
On another PC, follow the procedure on the link below to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and follow the steps in Part 3 to 'Try it' to see if your noteboo will run this OS from the CD.  The 'try it' option does not need to install on the Hard Drive, it just runs from the CD.
    http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
Let me know if this will run.

  • Can you use time machine to back up an external hard drive?

I haven't used Time Machine so far and setting it up now.
Because my retina MBP has the limited hard drive size of 500GB, I'll be using a 2TB G-Tech hard drive as external hard drive.
I'll be partitioning it, 500 GB for the MBP as a time machine back-up, the rest as a hard drive for photography RAW files.
Can I set up time machine to back up the larger partition (the one with the RAW files) to a second external hard drive? Or does Time Machine only handle back-up from the main computer hard drive?
    thanks!

    Try reviewing this information.
    Time Machine FAQ
You will definitely need more than 500 GB to use Time Machine - see question 1.
Time Machine works with the main hard drive and any locally attached storage, but I don't know of any way to make it backup the second partition without resetting the Time Machine Preferences. You can do that with a cloning program.
    Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner
    Clone – Data Backup
    Clone – Deja Vu
    Clone  - SuperDuper
Clone Software – 6 Applications Tested
Two backups are better than one. Drives do fail.

  • Unable to install clean Recovery & Application/drivers on new hard drive

My HDD failed on Satillite P25-s526. I replaced it with OEM new drive. Also upgraded the RAM from 512mb to 2GB's. I have attempted to do a full recovery of the system using DVD which came with the computer.  DVD formats partitions in new HDD, loads the restore tool & downloads. Upon completion, Restore Tool indicated 100% complete. Recovery Disk removed when indicated & system states "Please wait while windows prepares to start...". After a short while, the screen goes dark but the HDD indicator light indicates it's still processing. After a short period, the computer does nothing! I have left it on for at least 1 hour to see if it would reboot. Nothing! Upon restart, I do not get the Toshiba splash screen & the OS starts with the Windows XP/SP1 screen and then the screen goes blank! Boot to Safe Mode loads and then a pop up indicated that only part of the OS loaded and to reload. I have done this twice with the same results. Any ideas on what to try next?

Thank you for your quick response. I have been able to confirm that the new hard drive is in fact, the exact model and nominclature as the original (MK8025GAS HDD2188). I have also rechecked that I installed it correctly, since the HDD can be configured as both master or slave.  SET UP acknowledges the hard drive and it's capacity. The Rec & App/Drivers DVD appears to be in good working order.  I have been assured by the manufacturer that the HDD supplied is the exact replacement to the original and is not have ATF.
Toshiba trouleshooting for this HDD states that reports of systems not being able to recognize all available capacity of this hard drive & offers two 3rd party suggestions to correct the issue. They are EZ DRIVE by Micro House and Disk Manager DiskGo by Ontrack. Unfortunately, neither would do me any good since I cannot install them in the computer present condition. Further more, I'm not sure that they would help since SET UP indicates formatted Capacity of 80.012GB.
I was running Vista SP3 when the HDD crashed, I wonder if the drivers etc. have not reverted back to their original configuration with the Rec & App/Drives Disk?  Grasping for straws now!
